There are drug store brands that do purple shampoo. You'd have to see what's available at your store and read some reviews.

White and gray hair tends to yellow from products and the environment. Using purple shampoo once a week will remove any build-up and keep it bright.

Are there any good cheaper alternates for Purple Shampoo that are for white hair?

And will white dyed hair eventually turn gray or anything like that?

Ditto Bijou! Any drastic change is definitely best done by a pro. You may want to talk to a salon, just for a consult before making the commitment. It's definitely going to be a lot of maintenance. Depending on how quick your hair grows and tolerance for roots is how often to recolor.

yes, its totally possible to bleach and then just tone... BUT...IMO this should not be attempted at home, unless one is comfortable with hair loss and/or a burnt scalp.

rachylou: Ah.

Also, is it possible to not dye your hair but instead bleach then just tone it?

Also: Now i'm wanting platinum blonde/white but I have brown hair.

Admittedly, I go to a salon and don’t know the exact details. There are different formulations. I think it’s either applied during a prewash or some how mixed with either the bleach or dye. Olaplex also has at home after-dye products - shampoos and conditioners.

Yes to everything Bijou said. I’ll add there is a product called Olaplex that helps protect hair while bleaching.

I get my hairdresser to do blonde streaks in my hair. In my opinion you should get it done professionally ESPECIALLY if you want to go as light as white, silver or platinum. I am not a hairdresser, but have seen friends melt their hair by leaving the dye on for too long, as the hair gets very soft and breaks (like totally snaps off at the roots which is not a good look) if the colour is left on for too long. Bleaching hair and removing pigment from your hair is much trickier than adding colour and going darker (such as dying your hair black which is a much easier home job). You really need to be careful because so often home bleach jobs go an orange blonde colour. Stylists use toners to get the hair to the right shade and know the right amount of time to leave the colour and toner on.

The other consideration with lightening your hair is that your skin may react to the products. Bleaching kits can have very harsh chemicals that cause your scalp to burn or even blister.

For the look you are going with, a bit of regrowth is likely to look cool. But it is likely that every 4 weeks you will need a touch up. If you have your hair streaked, it is longer between appointments. The further you stray from your natural colour, the more obvious the regrowth will be.

Once you move to having dyed hair, you will notice that your hair is dryer and more brittle. I use very conditioning treatments on my hair between appointments to keep it looking healthy. I also use a purple shampoo and conditioner to stop my hair going brassy between appointments.

(male)

brace yourself for a million questions

Hey. So I was thinking about dying my hair. And I was thinking I would do blonde at the top and leave the sides and back my natural hair color (brown)

I am cool-toned and I was wondering, what shade of blonde should I do?

Also, does anyone know a high quality brand that would have blonde hair dye that would look good for a cool-toned person?

And how often would you say I will need to re-dye it?

And what all products would I need to dye my hair?

Edit: I'm thinking white/silver/platinum blonde too..
