I had the best hair stylist I've had in my life teach me how to cut my own bangs. I like them just right, so I often do a minimal trim between appointments.

Hubby is a little scary, but I may put him to work. He has essential tremor, which subsides after he has coffee and the day wears on. Still I notice he is having difficulty with some delicate tasks. He has never in his life had to cut someone else's hair.

I think I will wait a couple more weeks, then set up a chair, lighting, and several mirrors. I do have an almost full length cheval mirror that I might set up somewhere that has good lighting, or maybe drag a lamp into the guest room where I keep it.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I think patience will be rewarded. Also a certain elf has informed me that some long-haired family members are sending hair control gadgets for Christmas. This might help a lot.

I'd probably also force my husband into service if absolutely necessary. Straight hair, as I learned from attempting to cut my son's very straight hair, shows all the miscuts. If you cannot get hubby to help and you still need to trim it, I'd be sure you have a very good mirror set up to see the back as well as good lighting.

Ms Maven, you look beautiful and I like your longer hair too. I would recommend getting someone to do the trim, could DH be trusted to watch a video and not get too scissor happy? I know my DH would be very careful and so I would prefer for him to cut the back of my hair than attempt it myself. On the other hand, my father always went crazy when pruning the garden, so there is NO WAY I would ever let him armed with scissors anywhere near my hair.

If you're really just trimming the ends a tiny bit a popular strategy is to cut upwards at a very slight angle in very short snips to avoid too harsh of a straight edge.

I really like the way your hair looks in the photo And would not mess with it. I have cut my own hair occasionally since college. It is straight and usually from chin length to mid back. The sides are what I tackle first. The back is the hardest because you need just the right mirror set up so that you can see, cut and not be trying to cut while holding a mirror. Right now mine is about the length of yours. I want to grow it long enough to be able to put it up, easiest style ever but aging.

Hi, I have been cutting my own hair. I recently went from cutting my own long layers to a bob, as I am close to being able to cut off the last dyed bits. I would suggest watching a bunch of the YouTube videos until you find one with hair similar to yours and a technique that makes sense to you. I also went with a longer bob (lob) so I did not have to worry about getting any angles right. My plan is to do one more cut to get rid of the last of the dye and then grow my hair out as long as I can so that a real hair dresser will have something to work with.

Your hair looks great and the picture is lovely! I'd only consider bang trim with a good scissors ( lots of videos on youtube ) and only a tiny
bit . I tried to do mine and the back' trimming was difficult in every way - including awkward posing and muscle ache afterwards .

I think your hair looks great. Why mess with it? Your table is so beautiful.

I’ve been trimming my hair, but it’s short. It’s true, good scissors are key. My husband offered to cut it, but I declined. Manual dexterity isn’t his strength.

Interesting, the can shaped cranberry sauce! Growing up we had both kinds. My mother had a little divided bowl with both kinds. I made some, but use the can shaped type for nice slices for sandwiches.

Thanks for your replies and advice. For now I just want to clean up the scraggly ends. I should have made it clearer that I’m not looking to try to take off much length. I know my limits!

When I was young with longer hair I used to get lots of split ends. Now I don’t see any at all. They just break off unevenly. I would like to trim off enough so that the straggles aren’t so apparent.

I can also see that I might like it a couple of inches even longer.

Since it looks like I won’t be going out much in the next few months, I can wait to decide if I want to go back to the old bob. What if I don’t? I’d never have to schedule another hair appointment.

Hair length between the ears and the shoulders might be the most awkward length to cut yourself but you could probably achieve at least a trim with the collective info from multiple YouTube videos.

I enter as many different catch phrases as possible when I'm looking for results, so for example "DIY shoulder length bob", "trim ends shoulder", etc

I've been cutting my own hair since the beginning of the pandemic. But, my hair is longer than yours and I've only been giving it regular trims. For this, I secure my clean, wet, and very well-combed hair at the back of my neck with a hair tie. Next, I use a second hair tie a little down from the first one and cut right under the second tie. I used the unicorn method once or twice to get a layered look but the front ended up being a bit shorter than I'd like. In your case, I don't think I would dare to do it myself. A proper bob sounds like a job for a trained professional.

ETA: I did watch a lot of videos and then did my own thing, in other words whichever seemed the easiest and fool-proof option.

I asked my sisters for advice. My younger sister has generally had long hair. When I saw my older sister 18 months ago she had her hair up in a bun for the first time ever—always had a short bob. So I asked them for advice since l’ve gone nearly 10 months without a hair cut. Good hair cutting scissors and watch how to videos. My hair scissors were decades old so I bought a new pair..

Now for the videos. I haven’t found the perfect one so I’m asking here. I have fine straight hair now just past collarbone length.

Help!
