That sounds awful. I'm so glad that you were able to get it fixed.
Hopefully the hot oil treatment will help the dryness.
I'm so lucky I don't have to worry about covering greys.. yet. And dying my hair is out of my price range anyway let alone any unexpected mistakes.
Did you do the whole,
Hairdresser "So what do you think"
Client "It is brighter than I was thinking, but I really like the top"
Hairdresser "It's a great color on you"... then moves over to the register
Or in my case "Its a great feeling getting rid of those dead ends, isn't it" (as I'm running my hands through my hair wondering how I'm going to correct it.)
chuck, ching...
Or did you let them know what you actually thought at the time?

That sounds terrible Krishni! I'm glad that you complained! I'm doomed to colour my hair forever- I started going grey quite early and am not willing to do that at all- so colour it is!

My colour is pretty ok now but my hair is SO dry- it crunches when I touch it- yuck! Luckily though, a couple of months ago I bought a keratin treatment voucher on one of those group buying websites for $50 and hadn't used it yet. I called them and got an appointment for tomorrow- that should help the crunchy hair!

I feel so sorry for you. It happened to me too once, at a salon where my hair came out bright red. Red, as in cherry red. It was awful. I demanded it be corrected and the owner was able to bring it down to mahogany brown. It didn't suit me at all, but at least it was a normal hair color. Then they charged me for everything, including the mistake! $300. I protested and the owner made me feel really bad, and he insisted it had come out right the first time, and the second color was my choice, so I had to pay for both. There was nothing I could do. I paid but complained to Better Business Bureau.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your present warmer shade. Have you ever tried in salon hot oil treatments? Instead of a change through color, try it in the coming months: it makes your hair strong and shiny, like they are new. The treatment itself shouldn't be too expensive - at least not as expensive as a color - but it's worth it.

It was $200 for both times. The new ladies were lovely and toned it so that it looks the same as the nice upper layers of my hair- which are very similar to my natural colour, just a little warmer.

Sigh. (expensive) lesson learned!

Back from the hairdresser. Hair is fixed but I'm trying not to cry that I spent $200 for my hair to look exactly the same as before I started...except much drier and in way worse condition

Sitting at the salon near my house being fussed over by the 2 hairdressers here who squeezed me in. Currently have 2 different colours in my hair, 15 mins to go then toner then hopefully crisis averted. An expensive error but lesson learned!

That's a big blessing. It probably means that even if they can't match the underlayers 100% perfectly when they fix the problem, it won't be very noticeable.

I don't know how big your city is, but when I was looking for someone to fix my disaster I googled my city and hair color correction or something like that, and found several reviews on Yelp for the woman I ended up going to. Apparently a lot of people end up with dye jobs they hate.

I'm trying to look on the bright side. The underside of my hair might be fluro orange (seriously!) but the top is a pretty reddish copper and she didn't mess up the cut.

Thanks guys It really is Zoe from Sesame St orange!

My usual hairdresser is a precision cutter and doesn't do anything other than basic colour (he is semi retired so picks and chooses what he does) so I feel a bit stuck.

I do live in an area that has lots of good salons. I might pop down the street to one of them I hate having to spend MORE money on my hair. I should've stuck to doing basic home hair colour myself!

Megan, I always struggle with the idea that you should go back and ask to have something you hate "fixed" by the same person who ruined it in the first place. I would never do this unless I knew the person was usually good and it was just a fluke or something.

I agree with Steph. Find someone who specializes in color correction if you can. Can you go to your usual stylist?

Good luck and sorry you had such unfortunate results

Megan, I don't really have great advice, but I can definitely empathize. I had a nightmare dye job last summer--the first time I had dyed my hair in 15 years--and now vow to never dye again (just get a few greys colored with a paintbrush).

When I hated my color I washed my hair with dishwashing liquid. It did wash out a lot of the color. I made sure to use a very rich conditioner afterward. But if she lifted your color, that probably won't really work--only if the color was just deposited on top of your regular color.

If it were me, I would end up going to a hairstylist who can correct it, whether it be the original stylist, your normal stylist, or someone else. I found someone known for color correction who matched me back to my natural color, and it was well worth the money to me. Walking around with hair you hate just isn't worth it. :(

ETA: I really am a color neophyte as, as I mentioned, I have only had my hair colored once in 15 years. So you should probably wait for someone with more experience to chime in.

I went to my sisters hairdresser and had my hair colored yesterday and instead of copper underneath layers I have bright orange underneath layers. I’m really upset and don’t feel like I can go back to the hairdresser (since she’s my sisters friend) so I’m hoping someone here might be able to offer me a solution that I could do at home to tone down the brightness? I didn’t want to make it worse by using the wrong shade to tone it out :(

I know I SHOULD go back to the salon but it's a 3 hour round trip away and I really don't have time today!
