Yes, you can use purple shampoo on darker hair. In fact, John Frieda makes glaze for cool brown hair that's a darker purple than their glaze for brassy blondes. I use it from time to time when I've been out in the sun a lot. I've used a bunch of different purple shampoos and I like the John Frieda the best of all of them. It's very gentle.

Thanks. My hairdresser manages the salon, and keeps cards on what she uses on my hair. I always schedule my next hair appointment while I'm there so I'll get a cut and color every 6 weeks.

Agree with lozz oz: Stick with your present hairdresser! And, equally important, write down some info about that specific colour (name, no., brand, etc. - and how many minutes it should sit in the hair), so that you yourself know this for cases when your clever hairdresser may not be available.

Yes, I think my hairdresser finally found the right color for me. This time, I could barely tell the difference between my colored hair and my roots, and I had a 1/2" grow out. When the color wasn't quite the right color, I could always tell.

Thanks, Thirkellgirl. She made sense to me, too, but I wanted verification that I'm on the right track. Can the purple shampoo be used on hair as dark as mine? I've only seen it advertised for blondes.

Yes, when you bleach brown hair it goes through orange before it gets to blonde, and you often end up with that brassy shade. I've also come to believe, recently, that older women look better with ash shades than golden shades, no matter what their natural hair color was earlier in life. The brown in my hair (2/3 of my head) skews brassy in the summer and I use a purple shampoo to tone it down (which also brightens the grey I have in the front, so that works out well). As far as your season and color palette, I think that you do tend to look better in cooler colors and that you should listen to this (new?) hairdresser because she makes sense to me. Just my .02.

I went and got my hair colored again last Saturday, and my hairdresser said that she's glad she decided to use the ash brown color, as my hair has red undertones and goes brassy with the neutral brown (and even with the neutral-ash brown mix). She said she looks at the natural color of my eyebrows to determine what hair color will look best. She also said that my eyebrows are ash brown on the thick part and a little reddish on the thin part. What does that mean for me in terms of what season I am and what color palette I should use? Call me confused! I don't know if that indicates warm or cool.

I can say that my hair has always been ash brown with a slight reddish tint that's only visible in the sunlight. For some reason, however, I have to use ash brown hair color to keep from going brassy. Is it because brown hair always skews brassy, or what?

At any rate, I'm happy with the hair color she is now using on me.
