When my hair was strawberry/coppery blonde, I wore clothes that matched it. Now my hair is more light golden blonde, and clothes close to that colour seem to compete with my hair. Or maybe I don't like the look. I still wear copper and cognac.
I am like Janet and wear colours that match my eyes. I have green, blue and bronze in my eyes. I find olive works well.
My skin is peachy, and I do look good in peach. I overdosed on peach in the 80s and early 90s. Everything was peach. Peach shoes, peach leather jacket, peach sweaters, peach nail polish, etc. I can't do any more peach.

Haha - has anyone seen the design fail of the Colombian women's cycling uniforms...

For me with sandy/dirty blonde hair, beige skin, green-grey eyes and I guess pink lips...

I do wear blush, I do wear green and grey, but I actually find lilac to be the best colour to bring out my eyes. I wear camels and creams etc.. I have I think medium contrast colouring - and I like medium contrast colours on me. Too soft can feel wrong, but too strong/high contrast also doesn't work.

It depends! I decided that if I'm wearing brown, it needs to have texture or shine, or be in a print. Since my hair and skin are shades of brown, matte medium brown feels drab. I should probably stick to espresso and cognac shades and leave the mid tones alone TBH.

Camel is close to my skintone, but enough lighter that it works. It feels like a needed addition in winter to the black/cognac formula that I wear in summer. It kinda functions as my white.

My eyes are hazel- and olive and forest greens are a no brainer on me! When I wear forest green with black, I do feel the need to add warmth somewhere, like my camel coat though. Otherwise it's too much coolness.

I guess rust would be my lip color, similar to LaPed's version, which I wear a lot.

I have never thought about this but I know colour of the hair can influence what colours you can wear. when I had blue black hair in my 20s I used to wear very bright colours which I don't know if I could pull off as well now. When I went blonde, I found it easier to put pink in my clothes but I've never been able to wear pastel so maybe thats the skin. My hair is getting more grey and I feel I can still wear grey but maybe not a washed out grey. I have greyish blue eyes and can wear most blues except pastels.

Along with others it depends - hair yes! Love wearing black and white, and silver. Grey is very particular.
Eyes - Some colors bring out the green in my eyes but that is also a function of the light and some other mysterious forces, so I don't focus on this.
Skin - NO! Olive tends to make me look sick unless it is very blue (and then brings out my eyes).

Val, I love a good batik! I can envision the colors you mean.

Angie, I’ve always noticed that you don’t wear olive because it seems like an obvious choice for you. But if you don’t like the feeling? That’s that!

Phoebe a buffering, balancing layer is a good way to think of clothing.

KKards yes, no right or wrong, just what works for you.

Lyn the size/length of a piece does definitely matter, doesn’t it.

LaPed, the “big blob” can easily happen with longer hair!

Yess, yess&yess! I am and always was blonde (naturally and highlighted or dyed) and tans can be very elegant but can also suck my soul of if I don't do it well. May be it's all in the exact particular shade (a cooler one is better)...as my skin is also very close to tans(but warm) & I am a no contrast blonde.
I found that wearing tan shoes is always very elegant on me, especially when more skin is on show. It elongates my legs and bookedns hair.
I also love the color of my hair in patterns especially for lightenning up darks especially blacks or charcoal which are my neutrals in cooler weather.
But tan outerwear is tricky. I can do (like Carla) a SHORT tan puffer or puffer vest (especially if has some shiny finish or texture like furr/or great quilted pattern) but NOT a midi blank and matte no contrast tan trench or coat.
Same with tan in sweaters, too. Only if have some small sparkle, texture or details like a big cowl or so---but not a plain one. Can do some basic cotton ribbed V-neck knits or tees but they have to be fitted and short.

Hair colour -- yes, especially the more subtle highlight/lowlight colours. I'm predominantly very dark brown, but get some dark auburn highlights with enough time in the sun, and have a fair amount of grey coming in. I like black/white combos a lot, and charcoal heather, and also lean hard into the chestnut, burgundy, and rust shades that pick up my natural highlights. I don't often wear espresso/chocolate shades on top, because if I wear my hair down it sort of blends into a big blob with tops in those colours and I don't feel great. They worked better when I had a pixie or super short bob.

Eye colour -- definitely! Grey-blue eyes with ochre and olive flecks, and that could easily describe my base palette apart from the "hair" colours mentioned above.

Skin colour -- hard no. Anything nude-adjacent seems to look pretty ghastly on me. Can't do camel, beige, or blush. Slightly dirty whites--canvas and bone--are maybe my best light neutral? They make me look healthy and tanned, whereas most just drain the colour right out of me. For foundations I usually wear something like "light-medium warm-neutral".

Lip colour -- maybe? I don't own many pinks, but the ones I do gravitate toward tend to be in the same pinky-brown family as my natural lip colour (see jumpsuit below). Pastel pinks and bright saturated pinks are not great on me, and neither are the more orange-y watermelon/coral shades.

Jessikams, I can see how my examples might have been misleading, but I apply something other than rules to my choices.

I think my clothing functions as a kind of buffering, balancing layer between myself and my environment and my color preferences are guided by that, more than anything like a "rule".

I struggle with this as I’ve been coloring my hair since forever, and i have no idea what the natural color would be…i started life as a blonde, by the time i started high school i was definitely a brunette, at some point in my 20s my hair moved from brown to brown/black. So am i supposed to dress for the hair color that suits my “coloring”, the hair color that I artificially make my hair? Seems kind of arbitrary, instead, i like to match my outfits, ie wear shoes and belts that match, wear tops and bottoms that “go together”. But one of the things that YLF has thought me, there is not right or wrong way, there’s just the way that works best for you

I need t amend what I said about not incorporating hair colours as a blonde -- I realized in retrospect that I did do so. I just never did it consciously until YLF. A certain taupe worked really well for footwear/ belts/ bags and leopard also worked really well with my blonde hair and I loved that. I also liked taupe clothing. But for clothing in particular, it had to be cool. A warm tan or anything similar was just -- ugh.

Still, I remember around the age of 20 coming across a really cute 2 piece dress in cool oatmeal, charcoal and taupe plaid. When I saw it on the hanger, I thought -- that will look horrid on me. But no! It was fantastic. I couldn't figure it out because I *knew* I looked awful in beige. In retrospect, I realize it was the coolness of these neutrals that worked. I loved that outfit and wore it to death!

Jessikams, I'm a very big yes! And a very big no! :)

YES to repeating the colours in my hair and teeth, which covers all sorts of whites, creams, tans - and now taupes and bits of toffee. Especially in footwear and bags.

I have peachy pink skin so all sorts of oranges and pinks work well too.

I have green eyes, that are a shade of olive. When I wear olive, it perfectly matches my eyes, but I don't like it. I am unhappy wearing olive. I do not wear olive anymore, especially not with my darker blonde hair. There's my big NO. Very happy to wear very acidic and bright greens though, Just not earthy greens.

I don't have blue eyes but I wear a lot of blue!

My hair is black. Obviously I’ve had lots of opportunity to experiment with wearing it, since black is so available in so many types of items. My personal rule of thumb is: every outfit should have at least a touch of black in it somewhere, while no outfit should be one hundred percent black. All-black outfits can make my hair look dull and brownish. Black-free outfits can feel off, in a way that is hard to describe. It’s like they are bland, formless, disconnected (similar to the “invisible” feeling you described). So I do like incorporating my hair color in wardrobe items, but it’s all about the dosage, and it would probably feel quite different if my hair were not black.

Likewise the rule about eye color being an accent color seems like it wouldn’t apply well to brown-eyed people, aka the majority of humans, unless the rest of your wardrobe palette is *reallly* subtle. My mom and I both have dark brown eyes and we’ve often laughed about that rule.

Taking the whole picture, the color palette often found in traditional Indonesian batiks is perfect for me. I’m thinking black, gold, brown, cream, and dark blue.

Yeah, I agree that it depends. I’ve always favored colors in my clothing that pick up the colors in my eyes (depending on what I’m wearing, my eyes can look green, blue, or grey, or somewhere between any of those!). Those colors do tend to flatter me the best.

My natural base hair color was/is cool dark brown, and that is a color that usually works for me, but it’s not easy to find. I’d actually be interested in wearing it again, but now that I’ve stopped coloring my hair, there’s more grey and the color is even cooler than it used to be. Sooo greys are working better now.

There have been times when my hair warms up in tone during the summer when I’m out in the sun more — some auburn showed up then. I think I can get away with those colors but they’re never my absolute best.

As for matching my skin tone, it never works. I don’t like any “nude” shades or flesh tones on me. They’re always off and also extremely tricky to wear without aforementioned “naked” risk.

"Nothing worse than the dreaded “no pants” look." Omg, lol! First time I saw this was in a gym, I was completely stunned. Did she forget her pants? Why have no one told her! Haha.

I can relate to the washed out feeling. In theory light grey should work with my colouring, but I end up looking like a "corpse who has been floating in a lake for 6 weeks", to quote my dearest brother.

I do stick to cold and muted colour tones though, those make me shine. I feel

My hair is still (mostly) black, as are my eyes, but I've actually purged all black from my wardrobe - & haven't regretted it since, lol!

That said, the ends are slightly browned (I use henna) so I've found that a warm chocolate brown & dark bronze are my happiest neutrals these days (even though cream 'should' work as a light neutral, it always ends up wearing me instead...)

I tend to look naked in mustard yellow lol, but my skin almost glows when I wear gold or orange. TL;DR: I'm not sure Zyla's theory applies to me. Either that or I'm an alien, lol!

To funny Bijou! That’s happened to me before, taking selfies with friends at an event and then realizing we all looked naked together

The nude look is not good. I was attending a teams meeting wearing a strapless sun dress, when I realised my head shot made me look as though I was sitting there naked! Not a good look, luckily it was with a friend who had a good laugh about it when I noticed and said, I am wearing clothes you know!

Suz, YES, my hair color works well as an accent but not as a whole outfit. And black and white patterns are so good. Perhaps they bring out the dark and light of the eyes and teeth.

Bijou, nude is a dangerous color! Nothing worse than the dreaded “no pants” look LOL.

Phoebe, interesting to hear that you don’t tend to use your natural color elements as a strategy. It sounds like you prefer more general clothing rules, for example brown for casual leathers and black for formal. Do you “adapt” those rules at all to suit your personal taste, or do you find they work just fine for you as they are?

On me, it is hair and eye colour that is a yes, skin colour, is no. I have friends who look stunning in nude tones, but on me, it is not good at all. I disappear, exactly as you describe. The right shade of beige which is darker than my skin tone looks good on me and I love my beige anorak and coats.

For myself, I'm firmly on Team "use my naturally occurring colours in my wardrobe." But it wasn't always thus...or at least not where my hair is concerned. My eyes are blue and I have always worn a lot of blue. I've also always loved the berry tones, which appear in my lips. I don't wear a lot of pink but magenta, fuchsia, orchid, and blue reds are usually in my closet.

For most of my life my hair was a sort of dirty blonde, but I highlighted it, so it wasn't entirely natural. Meanwhile, yellow is one of my worst colours. I also look awful in beige. So I did not wear those colours when I was blonde and I also tried to reduce the brassy tones in my blonde hair because whenever things went too yellow in the hair, my complexion looked horrid. When I dyed my hair red, I didn't wear more red; instead I wore more chocolate brown and purple and green (all of which I really like but they didn't suit me as well, as a blonde).

Going grey changed things.I like grey or silver or white for bookending my hair. I do have a light grey bag, and like it a lot.Like Jenni, I've found that with silver hair, black and white patterns work better than ever. I also find that white in a pattern has become so good that I've basically stopped buying patterns that don't include a bit of white or silver or light grey. And I wear charcoal and light greys happily.

Having said that—I find that unless I also add a colour and/or some contrast or shine or pattern, I feel less than fab in grey, esp. light grey. It flatters me, but also has the potential to make me disappear, much as you say wearing your hair colour does. I prefer outerwear in my other key neutrals (navy or white) or in red. So, for me, my hair colour's a lot better as an accent than as a whole outfit.

I've never matched my shoes and bags to my hair color, I am always guided more by the function, brown for casual, black for dressy.

Grey has always been one of my best colors for clothing, no matter the ratio of brown to grey of my hair, I rarely wear green the shade of my eyes as it emphasizes the pink of my face and while my lips are very pigmented I would not describe them as red.

I've never heard this idea before and I can't say I've applied it unconsciously either!

I have some very golden almost metallic (natural) highlights in my hair. I have a sweater that has gold lurex woven into it and have noticed that it REALLY makes my hair pop. The effect with my skin is less ideal — almost overwhelms me — but I wear the sweater with confidence and enjoy it bc the effect with my hair is SO striking.

I find that matching my eyes (dark blue) yields a more harmonious but still striking effect, so I like doing that too. More of a no-brainer, I have to admit,

I have never dyed my hair and now it is white. I love wearing a whiteout outfit but it helps to find your best white. Mine is really a dove grey. Ivory looks terrible and actual opaque white does nothing for me. A soft white is better. A mix of white shades works well. I love white footwear and a white bag for bookending. A black and white mix is a great look too.

As with so many style questions, the answer seems to be “it depends”! I am kinda all one color except for my eyes…. So I do need some of that dark green, dark brown or black to “wake me up.”

Echo is too right to trust one’s own experience and preference: “ I think if you have experimented with your natural color palette in the past and were not comfortable, that's all the evidence you need to avoid it.“

It works for me! I used to wear cognac footwear to bookend my hair when it was darker copper red, but I’ve got so much white now, it looks sandy or strawberry blonde (#1)

I’m looking for a pair of booties like the ones in #2, and have a few items (see Finds) that play well with my hair.
