Thank you Suz for the input and sharing. I like the idea of chocolate brown! I will consider this color as well when rethinking outfits, colors and combinations.

Purple has always been a fav of mine (esp. Eggplant). Additionally, I have noticed a lot of blue (mostly in prints) has crept into my wardrobe in significant quantities over the past few years.

Wow, I love your outfit from today -- and it should do a perfect job of bookending!

Agree with all the others that your hair colour is lovely, your specs are fab, your mischievous smile recalls a younger Diane Keaton, and you appear to be one stylish woman! :)

I am a natural dark blonde (now about half grey, but I still cover it). In my 30s I dyed my hair a coppery tone like yours and loved it (except for the upkeep.)

My complexion is cool and my eyes are blue. Black has always worked reasonably well on me. It's a bit strong, a bit high contrast for me, but worn with care, it looked good. As I've aged, I've largely replaced it with charcoal and/or navy and ink, all of which are more flattering.

But when my hair was that coppery tone, I found black did me no favours. I really noticed it. I felt truly drained in black. Meanwhile, all of a sudden, a rich chocolate brown was absolutely stunning! I wore as much brown as I could find in those years. Purples were also brilliant. (They're good now, but nowhere near as good). Greens were fab, too. And blues. Some pinks, also.

Anyway, I think you are sorted with the bookending thing. You don't need to do it all the time; you don't necessarily need to do it with footwear; and really, it's more about outfit cohesion than a specific way of achieving that. Much as I enjoy bookending, sometimes my "bookend" is darker shoes if I am wearing a darker top -- so that I feel "grounded" instead of unmoored. And sometimes my fallback is to match my shoes to my pants or skirt, to extend the legline.

I am firmly in the MORE CHEETAH AND LEOPARD camp. I manage to bookend with those, too. :)

Thank you all so much ladies for the feedback and suggestions. And the complements! BTW my jacket is Navy - lol. I know bookending is not the only way to dress but it was the topic that enabled me to get in touch with the struggle and somber feelings I have been having while getting dressed lately. Thus, I am preoccupied with assessing my situation, shoes and dressing overall.

I know Congac is the go to color for the bookending concept but am not "feeling" that color in my footwear just yet. I will try to be more open when looking at shoes to add to my wardrobe and filling holes. Thankfully I love Cheeta! so I know that option can work. I am considering trying Blush and Peach to add in a top to see how it makes me feel. As a matter of fact I pulled out an old Mellon colored open weave sweater out for my "Friday" work look and added my cheeta shoes ;-).

Inge, thanks for the Links! I appreciate you spending the time and effort to provide some guidance and reading - which I am really looking forward to doing this weekend to further my education Below is what I pulled together today in an attempt to inject color/fun (sweater is a light mellon color and the pants are burgundy/dark red) and the bookending concept!

Your hair is a very pretty color right now, and from your picture you seem to have a Diane Keaton-ish touch of mischief well-suited to coppery shades. I agree with everything the other YLF members have said so far: cognac would be a great bookend choice, but bookending is not the only way to go and hair color is probably not the source of your discontent. The truth is that most of us find black an increasingly difficult color to wear, mostly because of lightening skin tones that are easily overwhelmed by dead black. You could have a lot of fun looking for your best black substitutes: midnight blue, deep periwinkle, espresso brown, Prussian (deepest teal) blue, and dark pine green are all possibilities that are rich and sophisticated on redheads. Maybe an excursion to try on some of these shades (and some cognac or rose gold shoes) could put some oomph back in your dressing?

First of all, I LOVE your hair colour and cut on you, M, and your specs look great too.
Second: bookending hair colour with footwear really is only one of many tools to achieve outfit coherence, visual interest, etc. I am pretty sure that your shoes still look beautiful with your outfits, and wearing footwear in a colour that doesn't match your hair can be just as stunning (plenty of ladies on the forum with non-blonde hair for example who rock white and light-coloured shoes), so please don't feel sad.

Also: bookending footwear with hair colour is just one option. Angie wrote about 12 other bookending possibilities that help pull together an outfit here:

http://youlookfab.com/2013/10/.....ookending/

I love the sound of the colours you enjoy wearing, they all look terrific with copper hair. Great suggestions from the other ladies for footwear options. I also thought of blush, gold and rose gold metallic shoes.

Black can indeed look a little harsh sometimes, but perhaps try wearing it mixed with a lighter colour close to your face. E.g. black blazer with a patterned top that has a lighter colour in it, black top with a statement neklace that catches the light (or large earrings), black sweater with a patterned scarf... Opting for black items with textural interest can make a big difference too.

http://youlookfab.com/2012/11/.....-or-shine/

http://youlookfab.com/2008/09/.....-ensemble/

http://youlookfab.com/2012/10/.....ost-black/

Ah, this post might be helpful too:

http://youlookfab.com/2009/10/.....k-top-pop/

I'm going to try to find some links to fun outfits in which people are not bookending their hair colour with footwear Hope that will help as well.

It's disconcerting when your "tried and true" colour palette starts letting you down. Because hair color is so easy to fix, i think we sometimes forget that skin tones and eyebrows can also change as we get older.

Your new light copper colour is gorgeous but the reason that lighter shade looks so good on you now might be that it harmonizes with your current skin tones and eyebrows. Black might not work the same way it did when your contrast was higher and brighter. Maybe a pair of cognac shoes might be a way of starting to experiment with a new colour palette?

Similar colouring here. Cognac and taupe both work quite well for me but I've found I prefer oxblood, maroon or even true red. I think Angie suggested leopard print as well, but I've never tried that.

We have similar colouring, though your red is brighter (I've just grown mine to its natural red+white mix, so I'm kind of sandy). I have all colours of shoes: black, blue, olive, silver, red, nude, and cognac. Cognac is my 'bookend' colour, but I am not confined to it. I also have a cognac leather jacket, a cognac leather belt, and a bag with cognac handles.

I *am* wearing less black - opting instead for dark/navy blues and more white in my wardrobe.

There are no strict fashion 'rules' here, just lots of helpful hints and advice. 'Bookending' is just a cool concept that seems to be very effective when you put it into practice.

My hair is similar in color to yours and I wear a lot of black. I don't have a single pair of cognac shoes. And my fave shoes right now are olive green! I'm not anyone to be giving fashion advice, but I do try to "bookend" my olives and blacks by not wearing a solo item of that color. Black belt with a black sweater, olive shoes with an olive top or jacket. I just went through an Etsy shopping spree to fill out the color palette a bit just for this reason.

I think you look awesome in that black topper.
Loads of ladies like the black clothes with cognac belt, bag and/or shoes.

I think that hair colour is smashing on you!
The outfit you have on looks great. Maybe black is a bit too harsh on you now?

Bookending is great, but you don't have to do it to be pulled together.

Still, if you are looking for a bookending color, I would try cognac - a rich brown with deep orange in it.

My apologies up front for the long post.

The post the other day on haircolor and bookending helped me identify the difficulty I have been expierencing lately in dressing for work and not feeling as "sharp" as I typically do. I haven't been feeling that "happiness factor" in my dressing lately. Its because my haircolor has changed!!

A little background:
I am a natural medium brown with fair/medium coloring and very blue eyes. I am also prematurely grey (first grey's showed up at age 19). Because my mother is a natural strawberry blonde - as a kid I always had natural red highlights from the sun. Therefore, in my mid 20's I began coloring my hair various shades of red over the past 20 years. I LOVE my red

Fast forward to recently, at the age of 49 I finally commited to a light copper color (last summer) because my hairdresser has told me I am 80% grey now and my hair grows so quickly I have to color every 3 weeks. The lighter color makes my "growth" appear less dramatic and I can get away with 4 weeks before having to color again.

However, I have always loved wearing dark colors (black, grey, navy, eggplant, olive and deeper jewel colors). I also wear tan, sand, light grey and LOVE white (clothes and shoes). Most of my shoes tend to be darker with a few light shades. I also love bronze and pewter shoes.

Afte reding the post on bookending I realize 80% of my shoes do not go with my haircolor. I am struggling when dresing now and am very sad as I don't feel I look as great in my fav color = Black, as I once did.

Finally to the question. Suggestions on how to transition with both shoes and clothing colors to feel more put together and a higher "happiness factor" with my lighter hair color.
Thanks ladies for reading this. Attached a a pic w/ my hair color for reference.
