Boy, I just reread this entry, and I realized how I flipflopped on my committment comment. I do think the decision to color your hair is a committment, but you don't have to committ to the color. Does that make sense? If you really don't like the outcome, you can have your hair colored back, so growing it out wont be so obvious. But if you do like the outcome, then you are committed to keeping it up. That is what I was trying to say. Sometimes my eloquence goes on vacation!

That's the beauty of coloring your hair....there is really no such thing as making a committment. It always grows out, and if you really really don't like the way it looks, after a few weeks, your stylist can redo it. But remember you have to get used to seeing yourself with a different color.

You know what I absolutely LOVE? I love making a dramatic change to my hair. I rarely go more than 2 or 3 haircuts w/out a change!

I’d absolutely try a reputable hair stylist and colourist first before you do anything yourself. Seek a professional opinion as to whether you need highlights, a semi permanent, half foil or anything else. See what happens and go from there. Christie & Nicole have offered excellent advice.

Mirah, What is it you specifically want to accomplish with your hair? Are you looking to cover the few grey strands? Do you want to hide the few grey strands? Or do you want to add some depth and dimension to your dark hair?

Ive been color treating my hair for maybe 5 or 6 years. Not for grey coverage, but just to add some interest to my dark brown hair. I let my stylist pick the colors and she varies them based on what season it is. She foils it, using 2 or sometimes 3 different colors, but the end result is a natural looking highlight. It is not choppy at all. I have it done every 12 weeks, and it costs about $100. It would be more if I had it done in the city though.

It is a bit of a committment though. If I decide to stop coloring, I either have to let it grow out, or I have to have her dye my whole head back to its natural color...and to be honest, I have no idea what that would be anymore.

I'm not an expert on this subject, Mirah, but there is something to the fact that the chemicals we use to color our hair can and does have the potential to cause certain health effects like cancer. What that means for the average person is unknown. I think the greater risk is to the hair stylists who breathe the fumes all day.

I love eco-friendly products and buy them whenever I can, but I try not to be dogmatic about anything, and some chemical highlights every once in awhile never killed anyone--and probably never will.

If you can afford to pay a good stylist to do the highlights, I recommend it. I can usually tell when someone has colored their own hair versus when a professional has. But doing it yourself is also an option, and a much cheaper one at that.

I have colored my hair on and off. I can't afford to do it always, but I do enjoy it every so often for a change. It's amazing how you can really change your mood or personality with a new cut and color. I would recommend talking to a stylist you trust about what would look good on you.

hi..i dont know whether i'm off scope here but i'm 29 and recently started seeing a few stray grays over my gray matter (freaked me out at first but getting used to them) I was thinking of getting highlights but not permanent ones. i have natural black hair which i dont want to let go of ..never colored my hair before. any suggesstions? ideas? should i go to a salon or try it myself at home? I was reading about organic hair color..is it boo-hoo or is there any sense to it?
