Lyn, I'm late to the conversation, but I have to echo what the others have said -- you have lovely features and I don't see the issues you are concerned with. However, I understand those feelings! I avoid going too short with my hair because my head is proportionally quite small and I don't think it has a very nice shape either.

I have a suggestion -- what about changing your fringe to sideswept bangs? This may update your look and help give the impression of thicker hair.

Lyn you have some excellent leads to follow from our wonderful forum.
I want to encourage you with regard to your hearing aids. I have been wearing them for 15 years with a pixie haircut and in my experience people simply don't notice.
Just as an aside, one of the reasons I so enjoy the forum is that it a conversation I "hear" in its entirety.

You are always so polished and pretty in your pictues that I would never know you were feeling a"bad hair day". I know when I feel my hair isn't right, it can deplete a bit of confidence.
Talk to your stylist honestly. They can cut to work with cowlicks, cuts to cover thinness and advise on products. I just went to new stylist and she asked me to show up without any product and barely styled so she could see my natural hair.
It showed the cowlicks perfectly obviously (I usually fight to straighten them).
Hair color can add a bit of texture but I am not sure how lightening can be - maybe you need to still color but add conditioning treatments? Ask about that.
Nioxin might be a good solution - nothing to be ashamed of as hormonal flux can change hair follicles.

I would love to see your after pictures and know you will look beautiful no matter what

Lyn, I love the photos that Ana posted and have great hopes that this direction will work for you, giving you everything you wish from your hair!

I do have short bangs, yes...but they are relatively longer than the rest of my hair, if that makes sense. I mean, by most people's standards they are short, but they are the longest part of my hair. :-)

Ana posted some great pics, along the lines of what I would suggest. You have such a sweet face, and the front of your style is really quite good. Lift up the sides so that the cut sweeps up on an angle along your chin line, with 'volume' at the crown.

You will have a short easy to style cut, pixie like at the back, but with feminine length around the face, and the coverage you want at the ears.

Colour is good, but some low lights ( darker underneath with lighter top) might help provide a look of thicker hair.

I should clarify what I meant with about the Uplifting Foam. I only use it on clean, damp hair. But if I want to skip washing the next day, my roots aren't gunky or oily from using it on Day 1, which is an issue with some products.

Just bumping once more, as wanted to thank to Trancina and Peri chimming in, too.
Trancina: Yes, I do also wish you could came to me showing how to deal with my cowlicks, but your description is also very very detailed and helpful for me. Thank you! I knew about NoPoo but didn't dare to do it more than 4 days. But I also didn't wet my hair each day, only each second...and used conditioner. So, that is another recipee...will give a try on yours, soon:-) Thanks again for being such of a great help.

Peri: you are really sweet. Shame on me for whinning that much-but I really feel like this for sooo long(years now). Hope I can sort it out one way or another with all the precious help found here on YLF.

BTW, poor me, even I was not asking-but was recently adviced on Nioxin too, by my 10 years older SIL(who has the most thick and healthly dark hair in the world). She said she treated with her husband(who is almost bald)...so you can imagine how I felt learning about she thought I really need to do something with my hairloss, too...:-(.

OMG, so happy I finally posted this-as I certainly struggled with doing it or not, a lot! You've given me some great advices and your kind words are petting my soul and boosting my confidence again. I cannot thank you enough for all the kindness and toughtfullness, my friends:-).

JenyAnne+donat: my hair is so fine and thin, that if I would have more length on the back around the cowlick, than would weight down all my back shape...

Deb+Ana: yes, I do think going a bit shorter on the back and a more dramatical angling to front sides is my only way to change things up a bit for now.
I am going to a new hairdresser, who does the hair of one of my friend's and she has a more dramatically angled bod, which I love- My friend has much more and thick hair still, I have big hopes she can do that for me, too(?).

StaceyMcGill: you gave me some great ideeas for some new products I have never heard of, and don't know if they are available to me here in Hungary(will search on the ebay, or amazon for them). I do use protein shampoo and conditioner (Tony and Guy)-but never ever used uplifting foam on the second day(only on clean hair, immediately after washing). Is anybody using it on the second day, too? So do you style it again, too?

Betti: Do you and Suz really have (short) bangs??? I have such of a sparse hair on front that I'm afraid it will look even more nasty with shorter bangs...Do you find it helps hair looking more thick and healtly?

Shannon: I don't really understand the difference between choppy and layered...this has to be a lack in my language skills, can somebody explain, pls?

DianeG: You may be very right about straightening irons. In fact I am using a round ceramic hot brush to blow dry my hair. That's not the same I think. I was told(and had the experience) if only blowdrying my hair on itself without a tool to shape it, it all falls in an intollerable of a flimsy and messy no structure way....:-(. But will consider that too, again-see what happens-pehaps when in hols, or so:-)

Vix-thank you for chimming in just for pampering my soul. You are so sweet:)

Suz: Thank you for taking twice the time to comment. You are a great cheerlader for sure. I feel your care and compasion through the air. People certainly know I have big issues with my hearing, but am still not confident enough to showcast my devices to all around, esp not at work-but it's ripening inside..:-)so once will decide on it, will surely go shorter!

MNsara- bangs (and cowlicks) are sooo hard, isn't it. Thanks for stopping by my bench. Hope it gets easier to you, too.

Ana, thanx for the great picties. Many women here wear Victoria's hair-in fact all I want is a kind of hers, too--and stacking is also a great ideea!!!---but wow, esp loved the others you posted (first 3- where bangs are longer and swept to side)-. Would gladly consider growing out my bangs, too- but I'm sure they wouldn't be that thick and full as shown on those great models-and even deciding on it would take some time in between looking more frumpy then ever...I think I'm not on that mood, yet-but will take another look at it later.

Texstyle- I don't see when I'm loosing hair..(is that blonde, thin and fine!)... but thank you for reminding me to check my iron and thyroid levels. will do that asap.

Rachy-I started dyeing my hair so bright blonde because I was adviced to do so the scalp will show through lighter roots less than through dark roots. Did you mean to let myself going grey? (I am not evenly grey yet, still a dark blonde on the lower back)

Sorry, that was a long comment and took me a bit of time to write it in a bearable Engish, plus I was interrupted many times-but still, wanted to thank y'all the time and positively kind comments which made me smile again, and again tonight-your advices are food for my weekend thoughts -but how wonderfull is that I can feel your care and love comming through, OMG-thanx again:-)))

When I saw your pictures I was so bowled over by your eyes and skin I barely looked at your hair. And was getting on to say so, but reading the posts I can tell I'm about the 15th one with the same opinion!

But your hair doesn't look frumpy at all. If you want a change, maybe an Angie cut? I'm a bit worried about thinning myself and my hairdresser recommended Nioxin products. I've just bought a set so I can't give any reports about how it works, just passing that along.

Your hair is not nearly as bad as you make it sound. I have hair much like yours. Fine, many, many cow licks.
My strategy on the front cowlick is don't fight it. Let the hair flip the ways it wants to. I do use a graduated razor cutting on a middle strand to keep control so it doesn't fall into the middle of my forehead like a horn.
The back split is also something I deal with. Layers are ok but they should be fairly long layers. While hair is damp use a scrubbing action with fingers in all directions. When almost dry finger the hair as you want it. Since your hair is fine and thin it will dry fast this way and the scrubbing will add lift.
I don't use shampoo, haven't for about 4 years. I use WEN, I will wet my hair every day but I don't "Wash" it everyday. Natural oils in your hair will add texture, volume, control, health, shine. I will occasionally use dry shampoo.
Fine hair usually will take on shape, bends easily so if you scrunch as you dry with or without blow dryer you should be able to get some waves which will add texture and fullness. I wish I could come over and show you 'cause you really have great hair.
From the photos I would suggest growing the top layers longer and stop trying to make your hair do bangs. You have a beautiful face.

Mmm. So I know there's a lot I don't know about hair. Lots of techniques and products to try. I don't know what exactly could be done or, more specifically, what your stylist is trained in.

I like the idea of a pixie cut, if your hair would do that, and/or fuller, side-swept bangs like tex posted. The bangs would mean some growing out.

I'd also ask, lyn, if you'd consider taking a break from dying your hair? Or moving away from such a bright blond? It's a little bit ladies-who-lunch of a colour, and I think that could be some of where your frumpy feelings are coming from. Because on the one hand those ladies are the ones who keep the couture houses open, but on the other, they do tend to hole up at the club. It's a hip hair colour with secret baggage.

I agree that you look beautiful and are being too hard on yourself. That said, if you do indeed feel you are losing hair then you should definitely have your iron level tested (not just basic test but full iron panel with ferritin) and your thyroid levels just to be sure. When my iron is low I notice immediately more hair in the comb after shampooing. There are iron specialists doctors who focus particularly on this. If you search for "low iron hair loss" on the web you'll find info. or "low iron hypothyroidism".

I don't have a lot of advice, other than to second what Deborah said about having a long talk with your stylist before you make any big decisions. It's important that you feel comfortable with that person. Also, it may take a couple of appointments to get your hair exactly how you want it. If it's a new stylist, it will take them a little while to really get to know your hair and how it behaves. I also second everyone else when they say you are beautiful. We tend to focus in on the tiniest things and they become magnified in our minds to the point we think everyone must see them. But I don't see many of the issues you are describing (not to invalidate your feelings).

As a suggestion, I second the possibility of going a little shorter in back and longer in front. Perhaps an even more "stacked" or dramatically angled bob will allow you to get more volume at the crown more easily without sacrificing length around your face (which seems to make you feel a bit more comfortable and confident). That way you don't have long hair at the crown weighing it down. There are so many possibilities open to you right now. SO many styles that will look great. "Pixie" and "Bob" encompass a huge number of variations. You are not limited. This will be so fun! I'm very excited for you.

ETA: I just went and raided my "Hair" Pinterest board and I'm posting a few styles here just to give you some ideas of all the variations and styles of shorter hair that might work for your situation.

You are WAY too hard on yourself! You are gorgeous! Love the hair color, your beautiful eyes and skin, delicate coloring, and even your expression in #7 lol

I'll just commiserate that bangs are THE hardest part of a style for me - I have a cowlick above one eye that means I had to immediately attack my bangs if I wanted to beat them down, and then they were never the perfect length for more than a week - otherwise too short or too long (giving me eye strain!!!!)

I hope our YLF hair 'experts' can point you in the direction you want to go.

Just popping in her for a second on the hearing aid issue.

I do understand the wish to cover these. But....again....are you sure they are as visible as you imagine? I know it depends on the type. But I know a young man who has relatively large hearing aids (he is very hard of hearing and cannot wear some of the smaller ones for a variety of reasons). And do you know -- no one ever notices them? Not at all. He also wears glasses, and somehow what you see is the glasses, not the other assistive devices. So I just want to throw that out there. I don't know what your particular devices look like, but I do want to suggest that they might not be as obvious to others as you imagine, and that might give you some more style options for your hair.

You are stunning. What fab skin and expressive eyes!. I'm not sure I'm much help suggesting a new style as I love your hair as it is. You could perhaps go a bit shorter. As for thinning, have you tried Nourkrin for women? I think it's a supplement. Also, I have only had ceramic straighteners used a couple of time on my hair at the salon, but I have to say that in my opinion they always make my hair feel thinner than when I just blow dry it myself.

My goodness Lyn - I think this is the first time I have seen you up close and you have the most beautiful face! Talk about gorgeous eyes and such a lovely complexion.

Like others have mentioned, I don't think your hair issues are anywhere near as bad as you think they are. We always seem to focus on our own flaws, don't we?

I love your hair color and I don't think I would change that. I'm wondering if a more layered, choppy kind of cut might work with your hair texture?

I hope Angie has time to pop in here - she always has such fantastic advice when it comes to hair.

You certainly don't look frumpy at all. I like the way your hair is now. The only issue I see is the cowlic in the back. Someone suggested growing it out a bit at the back, maybe consider that. You really are being too hard on yourself.

I agree, you're very pretty! Not what I would call frumpy at all. I'm not a sylist, but I do have thin hair and cowlicks, lol. So I'm wondering if you've ever thought about growing out your bangs? Or, make them short, angled and blown forward like Suz's (and mine, but not on my profile pic)? Just an idea. Bangs are the part of my hair I always struggle with.

I love your hair color, btw!

Are you absolutely against a pixie cut? I think your hair looks very nice as is, but you really have the face to pull off super short hair, IMO. I'm not sure what you mean by your head not being shapely enough -- I guess I'm not seeing that at all!

Other ideas:
- It sounds like structure is one of your key issues. Have you tried a conditioner with extra protein? Protein helps strengthen the hair. After six months of growing out my hair, I also ran into the "structureless" issue you mentioned. I switched to Redken Extreme conditioner and use the line's spray-in protein treatment once a month and it's helped a ton. Don't expect an instant fix, but it's worth a shot if you're willing to work at it over the course of 1-2 months.

- Aquage Uplifting Foam is an amazing product for creating volume at the roots. It looks very soft and natural and won't gunk up your hair if you want to go a second day.

- I'd talk to your stylist about coloring issues and see what he/she recommends for a coloring schedule to minimize damage. Maybe highlights 2-3 times a year and simple root touch-up the rest of the time would do the trick? Some may disagree with me on this, but I'd stop using the drugstore hair dyes. In my experience, they are much harsher on fine hair than salon products.

- I wish I had more specific ideas in terms of style. Again, I think this is where a good hairdresser could give you solid advice about what might work.

Lyn I'm not sure what to suggest but a good chat with your stylist before you do anything is probably wise. I do want to say that I think you are being a bit hard on yourself. Your close up pics reveal an incredibly gorgeous woman. You are attractive and have such beautiful skin and your eyes are besutiful and alive:). I like the way you currently wear your hair but I understand the need for change. Despite what you think, I am wondering if a shorter do might work?

Lyn, first of all, you are so pretty!! Such gorgeous eyes and such mischief in your smile.

Secondly, while I sympathize with the hair woes, I don't think it is anywhere near as bad as you imagine just now. You are having what we call a "bad hair day." And so you are seeing all the problems and none of the virtues.

I am going to give this some more thought and look at the pictures again. I'm not a hairstyle expert, so I hope that some who are will pop in with ideas and advice on that. In the meantime, please know, you don't look frumpy.
