It's funny, I have had short hair for a long time, and sometimes I grow it out a few inches like you did, but in times of major stress, I often cut it back quite short. I find it very clarifying and comforting to do so. Not only because it is easy to style -- which it is -- but I think also because the certainty of the the look is comforting also. There is some predictability with a shorter do, which can help add calm when other aspects of life are out of whack.&nbsp;</p> <p>Several years ago, when my sister died and we all gathered for the days leading up to the funeral, I could not wait to get to a salon and cut all my hair off -- really, really short. And I felt much better when I did. It was odd, but it was a very emotionally settling thing to do.</p> <p>And when short hair really suits you, as it does you, it works in that way too. I hope you feel really good when you look in the mirror. I've had major hair angst for a couple years, at least. Not about the grey, but about how short to keep it and how much effort I "should" be putting into styling it. Today, after one of the worst hair weeks I've had in ages, I had it cut short again. It's much shorter on the sides than it's been for more than a year, and it took me about three minutes to style it after I worked out this afternoon. Blow it all over, use some styling goop, and run my fingers through it. I think that, like anticipatory grief for my daughter who is probably going to be settling permanently in the Midwest, I have been coming to terms with and letting go my younger self who could have carried off longer hair. Photo #1 is a few weeks ago, when I'd already had the back trimmed tighter, #2 is now. </p>
