I had to laugh at the idea of cell phones, etc being forbidden in school... I text my kids while they are in school. I think the rule at my kids schools is that they can use their phones at lunch and between classes. I had to wear uniforms in middle school, but it was such a joke, because parents had the option to waive that requirement. All the cool kids got to wear normal clothes - so much worse and more marked than the usual "designer divide" in terms of creating an equal field. Those of us in uniforms rebelled by wearing such ridiculous things on our shoes, backpacks, heads, etc. </p> <p>As for the smuggling... The kids will find other ways to smuggle stuff in. Schools need to get a grip. I was one of the parents who voted to do away with school uniforms in the public school my daughters went to. The kids didn't actually have to wear real uniforms, which are easy to come by. Oh no. I had to buy khaki pants and maroon-colored polo shirts. One of my daughters was (and still is) as skinny as a stick and didn't even cast a shadow, so finding khaki pants that fit her was nigh impossible. Finding maroon-colored polo shirts was even more difficult. The regular school dress code, which expected kids to come to school decently dressed, was better. Anyhoo, I'm all for free choice as long as you're not exposing too much of your body or wearing clothing that has offensive slogans.
