I love this thread, and unfortunately don't have much to add, but I'd like to give you all a glimpse of my boyfriend's sense of "style" (in quotes because it's about as far from real style as you can get!).

Disclaimer: he works in the most casual office in the world. (Really. The only rule I know of is "no bathing suits.") And he has indeed confessed to me that he would not take a job that required anything above business casual.

He owns a boatload of tshirts, most of which are too big. Lots of logos (he works down the hall from the marketing department). He owns about three long-sleeves, purchased solely for a trip to Alaska to see my family. He claims that anything other than tshirts in summer, fall and spring make him too hot.

Shoes are worse: he only owns five pairs, and two of those pairs I made him buy for special events we had to attend. (They sit in the closet 99% of the time.) The other three pairs are Tevas for the summer, high-top Converse, and New Balance "grandpa" shoes. Are you getting the jist of this? HE IS HOPELESS!

Here is the kicker: HE WEARS JORTS. Jean. Shorts. Always Levi's. Purchased in the boys' section because he is very short (5'6") and skinny. To my utter horror, he actually bought some full-length jeans and then shortened them himself! With a denim needle and contrast thread! It was painful to watch. He does have a few pairs of Levi's full-length jeans (also purchased for Alaska), and he looks great in them, but it requires much prodding on my part to get him to actually put them on.

He owns three pairs of khakis, none of which see the light of day unless we are going somewhere requiring an ensemble that does not include denim. In a sad twist of cruel fate, the most expensive item in his closet is a pair of J.Crew khakis, purchased under my watchful eye, and they make him look so put-together and smart, even with just a solid color tee. But he hates wearing them. :(

I have tried and tried and tried, but he refuses to budge. Absolutely, staunchly will not bend. I have pretty much given up on him trying to modify his wardrobe.

Anyways...sorry to vent on this thread. But I wanted you all to know what I have to deal with. It's sometimes hard for me to be stylish when he is so UNstylish. But alas, to each their own, and if what he wears makes him happy, it's alright with me. (Except when we're going to weddings or other social events!)

Bravo Nicole for taking charge of hubby’s style and bravo to him for allowing you to. I’m sure he looks fab.

Christie, Maya is right about H&M and try Club Monaco for hubby too. They make his size. Buy online if you have to.

I love it when my husband wears the stuff I buy him. My girlfriends all ask me how I get him to dress so nicely. Since he hates to shop, he relies on me to buy ALL of his clothes. The only not-so-nice clothes he owns are all his dumb tee shirts he gets every time he runs a road race or rides a bike event. (I just got him to donate about 25 of those T's to a local charity). Today, we met at my son's baseball game and he had on this short sleeved western shirt that I bought for him. I know it sounds tacky, but it really works. The fact that he's 6'3" and has an althetic build doesn't hurt either.

I hate to admit it, but I do love to pick out his clothes. He always looks nice and I gotta give him credit. He is brave when it comes to some of the stuff I buy him. Since we live in a not so big city, people tend to dress a few seasons behind bigger cities.

Christie, I know nothing of the world of men's shoes, nor of redecorating husbands, but do you & hubby have an H&M nearby? I think my former bf is probably close to the same size as your hubby and he used to get everything from there. I think his waist size was 29" or so and he was (well I guess he still is) 5'11, also has a skinny neck though I don't remember exactly how skinny. Very very skinny, I guess. I am so jealous of how he looks in skinny jeans!

I just showed my DH those sandals, and he said he wouldn't be caught dead in any of them. Sigh....

Long ago I made a decision that my hubby wasn't my paper dress up doll. He's an adult, he can dress himself. I buy him clothes only rarely, and then I pick things I know he'll like and wear - not things I wish he would.

That means sometimes we go out together and look totally mismatched - I'm all dressed up and snappy, and he's not. But I don't care. He is not a reflection on me. We are two separate people. He's happy the way he is - and we're a lot happier if we're not trying to change each other!!

Okay, I did manage to get him to adopt and learn to love a black leather jacket ... but that's about it... and I was perfectly willing to have him turnaround and exchange it for something else.

Nicole, I missed your comment earlier. You crack me up.

Angie, the thing about the gents in Italy, is that they save the shorts for the beach or similarly casual occasions. When around town, they really cared how they look. The older men would wear dress trousers and nicer tops (and maybe a hat), even on hot summer days. The younger men tended toward jeans (Italians love jeans) and fitted t-shirts. They all looked hot-hot. I'm trying to convince my husband that this is the look he should go for, not shorts, jimmy buffett t-shirts, and trainers. He was in Italy, too. He knows what to do. Sigh.

Thanks for your responses. I'm still working on him.

Ana, to answer your question, my hubby has a very difficult time with casual style. He has to wear suits to work, but on down time, I can't get him to look good. Angie's pieces on men's style have inspired him, especially smart casual. He now has an outfit he wears out to dinner (dark jeans, button down, brown shoes). But casual. God. He is so difficult.

And yes, he is teeny tiny. He is a runner. He is now down to four dress shirts because we cannot find any to fit him anymore. His neck is about a 14"-14.5" but the 14" or 14.5" they make aren't the same as they used to be. They are bigger, if you can imagine. We even had him try on boys at brooks brothers, but the sleeves and bottom of the shirt were too short AND the neck was too big. (The sales person said I need to start making him lots of casseroles and pies). Because his waist is so small, many shirts are too big, but he does have a decent size chest, so some tailored fits are too tight in the chest and loose in the waist (i.e. JCrew).

His mother has officially declared to me that she is done buying him clothing after having to return so many things that didn't fit. I am almost there.

Ok, I am so sorry for the rant. But this is really frustrating for me. The man has to look good for work, but we can't find clothing to fit.

Anyway, back to casual style, I'll keep working on those sandals. He wouldn't wear these out in public, really; maybe to a casual barbecue, but mostly around the house/neighborhood.

Thanks again.

Christie, how big are his feet?

I bought these sandals for my husband about 3 years ago:

http://www.famousfootwear.com/.....t_id=67084

He wore them twice and then donated them to Good Will because the size of his foot made them look ridiculous. I really think size DOES matter--when it comes to men's shoes.

No trainers with shorts. I can’t help it. This is a very hard look for me to understand. And unfortunately I can’t see the link Christie?

Converse are superb with jeans. (I adore men in the right type of Converse). For shorts, you need leather sandals, mules or thongs. These are great with jeans too. Below are a few links that might help. I hope I got these to you on time!!

How about something like this:

http://www.famousfootwear.com/.....t_id=67149

FTR, my husband probably wouldn't wear those. He wears shorts from April to November--and usually wears them with sneakers like this (to work):

http://www.shoes.com/Shopping/.....pg=5067990

Or nice leather flip flops like this (around the house, casual restaurants, etc):
http://www.rsn.com/gear/produc.....Thong.html

I like the idea of canvas Converse (I just bought hubby a pair of low cut off white--but he hasn't worn them yet either). He'd like a pair of sneakers like this, but I can't find any that look good in size 13:

http://shop.vans.com/webapp/wc.....378001_-1#

I don't mind men in shorts w/sneakers. I suppose it depends on what the shorts look like, how long they are, and where he'll be wearing them too.

Actually, I don't mind the look of a guy in trainers and shorts (I am definitely no expert on guy clothes though).

Is he trying to achieve a "smart" casual look to wear to work, or just out and around town? I think there is less gray area with guys when it comes to that then there is with girls, but guys also have fewer options for clothing (especially when they are an unusual size). You said your hubby was smaller, right? Is he the runner? My husband is the opposite, he wears a 2X top and 44" waist pants. It's really hard to find anything stylish in those sizes. They all look like giant tent polo shirts or plain old t-shirts.

Angie,

My hubby is wondering what would appropriate attire be for summer. He is adamant about wearing shorts, so what sort of shoes would be ok? I've told him no on his regular trainers. I bought him some canvas Converse (in white) last year, but he won't wear them. And sandals are out because he has fussy, fussy feet.

I'm getting him these to wear with jeans: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....1&P=1

But I've told him absolutely not with his shorts. Or do you overrule me?

Also, what would you suggest, in general, for guy-casual style in summer. This one is the hardest for us!

(PS answer quickly, I've finally gotten him to buy clothing *gasp*)
