I have BOTH your gut problem and Rita's heart problem, because I do much of my shopping/browsing online first. If I fall in love and convince myself that I need something, I'll obsessively pursue it until I get it. And I also have trouble with only wanting to buy statement pieces that I'm in love with, and neglecting the basics.

But then sometimes I also forget to trust my gut instinct. Like after finding it online, I was totally convinced that I needed the red DVF wrap dress--it was on sale, favorite color, nice pattern, it was on my bucket list, etc. But then when I went to Neiman Marcus and tried it on, I was like, "Hmm, something's not right. It doesn't feel quite comfortable, maybe it's the wrong size, etc." But I was worried it would be gone if I didn't buy it right away, so I went ahead and took it home and posted a K/R. Wisely, everyone agreed it just wasn't working, so then I had to go all the way back to the city to return it. That's a total of 4 hours of my life (two trips for buying and returning) and $17 in bridge tolls and parking that I'll never get back. I should have listened to my gut and left the dress behind. Lesson learned!

If I am in a hurry or under pressure, I inevitably make shopping mistakes. Unfortunately, at home I do not have a three-way mirror and both of my full length mirrors (I think) distort the image a bit. But all in all, I agree that the trick is to listen to one's nagging negative voice, the one we try to dismiss because something else about the item is calling.

MNSara - you've hit the nail on the head. It's the "negative" gut reaction I really need to pay attention to. Usually when I fall completely in love with something, it works. It's when I have nagging little doubts and try to push them aside that I have trouble.

Each year I'm a member here, I find myself coming home empty handed more times than not. Even when I do find something, it's very rare that I bat for team wear. I need to mull it over a bit. Apparently my gut is not a quick thinker. : P

I'll have to come back tomorrow to read the other posts (tense computer sharing with 17-y.o. tonight!), but I have slowly come to realize that I should heed my gut reaction when it tells me 'maybe not' -- the 'negative' gut reactions.

These invariably end up to be purchases I come to dislike, or at least could have happily lived without.

I rather wish I had the 'positive' gut reactions also!

I think that YLF has informed and changed my "gut". Prior to YLF I hardly bought anything and came back from shopping trips empty handed.

That said, I think my gut is pretty spot on now, and can be listened to a lot more.

OTOH, when I flick through a catalogue the items that catch my eye tend to be the expensive ones, and my head is usually in control there!
Liking things on the catalogue and on the hangar are quite a different thing to liking them on.

Some great thoughts here ladies - thanks for your input.

I suppose it's all about finding the balance between head and heart when it comes to shopping. That way we have a few fab, maybe even statement, pieces that we love and feel amazing in (heart) and basics to help showcase those items (head).

I'm more the analytical type myself, with shopping and other life decisions, but I try to pay attention to both my heart (gut) and my head. That usually leads to the best decisions.

This is one of the techniques I employ to keep my wardrobe streamlined: if I am not in love with what I see in the mirror back it goes - or as you say I listen to my gut. Sometimes I see that fit is right but it just lacks that special something I expect from my wardrobe workhorses. My gut is very hard to please :-=)

I'm very much a gut shopper, but I've tried to be more thoughtful in the months since I joined YLF. Sometimes I then overthink something and pass it by, only to regret it. I think I need to stick with my BBQ strategy and return when things don't work out when I get them home!

I think my gut and my head are usually in alignment, though not always. Sometimes I have a conversation in my head between the rational side and the "but I really WANT it" side. The heart part usually trumps the head when there isn't a lot of $$ involved, but when it's a bigger investment, the head prevails.

I should do it more often! I feel like I'm often thinking too practical and the things I 'thought' I should buy are not worn that often. But when I go with my gut it's usually a piece I end up wearing a lot. I should work on that!

My returns are usually when my brain overrides my gut, which is hesitating for a reason.

I had a whole shopping season where I hated **everything** I tried on. Finally figured out my fashion gut was trying to tell me my bra size was wrong. Got that fixed and I could stand myself in the mirror again.

Another gut shopper here... although I guess I'm more of a gut returner, if you want to be specific. I really distrust what I see in the store, but once I get it home, I either love it or don't. I almost always still post K/R, since there are sometimes things that the forum sees that I don't (e.g. sweetness of my green dress or additional styling ideas), but I'll know if something isn't right.

I do trust my instincts but of course still make an occasional leap off a cliff I have some turquoise jeans that fit very similar to your red pants (and no, I have not worn them - they are my nagging constant orphan right now! I need to try to fix the fit issue since I have washed them to death in effort to shrink the thigh). I was right on the color but overly optimistic on the amount they would shrink in the wash.

It does take some bravado to try bold new silhouettes or patterns so having others encourage it along is a good thing. But going with the gut/what you know works and what you will wear effortlessly is proof of self awareness and confidence

My gut screws me up every time. I think I need to move from being a 'love this' emotional shopper to a thinking planning one. Because the success I have now is things that actually fill a hole, and they are normally boring (or more boring) than I would buy on impulse. On the other hand, getting obsessed with something so much that I hunt and hunt and finally buy, even though my gut says it is NOT the right thing, that i ignore. So obviously the NO from the gut should be listened to!

I think I listen to my gut too much. I need to get more rational with my shopping. If my heart falls for something, there is no fighting it. It's hard (impossible) to shop for any basics this way. They just aren't exciting in the same way as leopard, snake skin, colored jeans, dotty, etc....

I work about 10 minutes away from a Winner’s so on my lunch break I nipped there to return the red pants (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ak-syc-for). When I tried on the pants at the store last night, I didn’t get that “I love these” reaction – my gut did not tell me these were right. But I wanted to make them right so bought them and thankfully all of you reminded me they were not. So back they went.

While there at lunch time, I did find a flowy navy & creampolka dot blouse and tried it on. I got the “I love this” gut reaction. I texted my son and asked him what he thought since he had bought the pants for me for Mother’s Day. He said to get the blouse and he can hardly wait to see me in it. So I did (pics coming later – at work now).

Now this blouse is somewhat of a departure for me style wise and some may not think it’s the right thing for me but I had a complete gut reaction to it and love it.

Clearly I need to trust my gut more – if I’m that unsure about an item, then I shouldn't really buy it. Being unsure because it’s a different look for me is one thing (like the slouchy trousers) but being unsure about whether or not it fits (or can be made to fit) should be an indicator it’s not right. I don't include hemming or a wee nip at the waist in this category.

So what about you? Do you trust and listen to your gut?

P.S. This is the style of top I bought but with cream background and navy polka dots - the top is lined but the sleeves are sheer.
