This is an interesting question and thanks so much for posting it. I used to order one size only when I lived in the UK as I knew my sizes with various brands, it was then a matter of K/R based on whether I actually liked the product. To be honest, even though I saw the ladies here do it, the thought of ordering different sizes didn't even occur to me until I wanted to re-order a new pair of skinniness - the pattern had changed slightly in two consecutive seasons and the new one was a bit baggier so I had to size down. I was really annoyed I had to spend money on shipping twice.

Right now, having changed the country and consequently being in position to re/learn about the brands that I'll be getting things from, I realize I'll have to implement this tactic of ordering multiple sizes. My main concern is what Denise brought up - cost adds up and multiplying things in one order takes the total waaay up there. Also, keeping track of when the difference will be credited back to my account is just one more thing to keep thinking about and my current life mission is to keep things simple.
But, I met a local lady who told me that this is exactly how she shops for herself and her kids and there is nothing to feel uncomfortable about. So, we'll see how it works once I place that first order

Ha ha ha! I'm with Diana. Not only don't I feel guilty, I actually will purchase some items in multiples so that I can get the one that fits best. And yes, I'm that crazy woman who takes five of the same size jeans into the dressing room to try on at the store. Inevitably, if you try on multiples, you will find a dud and a winner. The only guilt that I feel is a slight twinge over the environmental consequences of unnecessary shipping. However, I typically buy where I can return to brick and mortar stores, so that just means one more pair in stock for someone who really wants it (or at least that's what I tell myself).

I used to, but really, it's more the anxiety of waiting for the credits to show up on my credit card more than anything. I hate carrying a balance and always pay it off in full each month, so I like the credits to show up asap. I just returned $600 in dresses, if that makes you feel better.

Yes, I do feel guilty - or maybe more horrified at all the packages that come in and out of this house! I usually have to order online for shoes for my size 11 feet, and I order multiple styles so I can actually try them on - I might order four pairs knowing I only want to keep one. I hate having to buy something in order to try it on. Rarely do I pay for shipping or return shipping, but yeah, it feels like a waste of somebody's resources.

Also, this may sound silly, but when I was a kid, we never ordered from catalogs and receiving a package was a really big deal - the thrill is gone.

I am still trying to figure out my post-baby body, and I haven't bought a dress in years. After a failed shopping attempt, I agreed with other posters here that I really had to go the Internet route while my DD is so little.

I got 3 dresses, each style in 3 sizes. Hoping at least one works! And I got free shipping, and free returns to the store. Two of the dresses were mail order only, so the only way to try them on was to order them.

I don't feel guilty about the retailer's burden--they really should account for it, especially since most of the time I'm ordering stuff that I can't try on in-store--but I still don't do it that often because of the accounting hassle. I use a credit card but I get twitchy seeing the inflated balance.

I don't feel guilty but when you're talking about items that are in the $200 range, I don't like the way this ties up your money. I use a debit card.

I don't feel guilty either. With the era of Internet shopping, I'm sure online retailers have factored in such return costs. And it definitely saves having to reorder an item multiple times if the first size doesn't fit. I've also read that it's more efficient to have one delivery truck (hello UPS guy) delivering packages to multiple households rather than each of those households driving individually to pick up whatever they would have ordered.

Nope. I do it all the time. I order enough to get free shipping. I order in different sizes if I am unsure. I order different colors if I am interest. I also order just to get an idea of the merchants fit and sizing. I tend to keep one item in each purchase. All the rest go back the following weekend. My system is really easy, convenient, and works great!!!

No, I don't feel guilty. I just ordered two coats yesterday knowing that one of them to go back.

I track the monthly budget by using Quicken. I enter all my clothing purchases under "clothing" and do the same for the returns. Quicken does the math and tells me the final total for each month.

No my guilt comes if I forget to return or waffle on keeping it and go past the specified time....and then I am stuck with an item I cannot use. That was in my pre YLF life (I hope) when I was still shopping for a life style that didnt exist.

When I shop online, I read the reviews before I order but it is always hit and miss. I usually order multiples because I would rather not bother with doing exchanges.

No, I don't feel guilty either. If I buy 3 sizes of one thing, I know going in that the most that I am going to keep is 1. (Now if i buy three of the same thing in different colors... that is another story.)

I do try to fit both the purchase and the return into a single credit card billing cycle though! That way I never even see the extra cost on my statement.

Thanks! I think I will give the dress a try. I try on at home and then do a single return of what didn't work to the store. I make it a point to return within a week of getting the item, so that seems timely.

I used to feel a bit guilty when I looked at the total puchase price, but I'm over that. As long as you know that you're returning the sizes that don't fit it doesn't matter. And Una is right, it's much better to try everything at once than return and order and return again.
