I bought my first pair of Fryes in 1978. The style still looks current.

Anne, that is such a fantastic idea on how to sell your hubby on Frye's. I'm on my way to try it on my history major & buff hubby. There are such brillian women here!

My new Veronica slouch boots are made in Mexico. Ole!

But, uh, they have their headquarters in the U.S., right? RIGHT? Please?

Two of my Frye's are made in Mexico, grey ankle boots and knee high brown multi buckle.
My white ones (I think it's the campus style) are made in the USA of USA and imported materials.

Docs are currently being made in england in some styles unless they are lying to the public--- they now market them specifically as made in england (the ones that are) and those boots are usually more expensive. Check the website. I love how a lot of Frye production went overseas, yet the boots have jumped in price way more than inflation (must be because they are "trendy" now).

Hmm interesting, I will have to dig out my Frye's and look at them now. This is one reason I like Lucky jeans, they say they are made in the USA.

Wow. The header on the page in the magazine is actually: "Made in America." The giant photo shows the Campus boot, however, so I guess it's not actually false, but it is slightly misleading.

Yes, like a lot of Fryes, both pairs I have are made in Mexico. Sparky, I wish that info from 2003 was still true but I doubt it. Not sure about Zappos info either, but maybe that's accurate.

I actually called Frye about a year ago to ask before ordering a pair. I got upset after a local shoe store sold me their last pair of boys' Doc Martens that were Made in England. Doc Martens closed their factory and sent over a thousand jobs to China so whatever all of us have bought recently are no longer English boots. Anyway, at that point I was on a mission.

I figured, as with so many other companies, Fryes are mostly manufactured abroad. I started poking around online, and found this:

From someone's blog (clearly dated info):
"Campus, Engineer, and Harness boots are made here in the USA in Arkansas. (per fryeboots.com cust serv email 8-12-03)"

And from Zappos, in a FAQ section on Fryes:
"Which Frye Boots styles are made in the USA?
Frye styles from the Capmus, Harness, Cavalry, Roper, Engineer and Logger collections are all made in the USA."

The article says they make boots in Arkansas and Pennsylvania. Maybe the unwritten end of that sentence is actually "...even though 90% of their wares are now made in China."

That was my guess, too!

I read that Teddy Roosevelt wore Frye boots, which I used as a persuading tidbit when explaining to my husband that I wanted a pair of Frye boots for an anniversary present. He's very into history, politics and the stimulation of the American economy, so it was perfect.

The Frye Company!

The October issue of Country Living notes that Frye started in 1863. During America's Civil War, both Union and Confederate soldiers wore Fryes. Eighty years later, Frye outfitted WWII service members. Sixty years after that (2005), Urban Outfitters started carrying them and they became hip to a whole new generation.

History lesson for the day -- and yes, this information will be on the final exam...
