I love Eileen Fisher and find her models gorgeous. One of my favorites is an older woman with the most beautiful silver hair; another is a chiselled Asian woman. Aspirational yet relatable!

Some of my favorite pieces in my closet are Eileen Fisher. The latest additions are slim leg pants in washable crepe. I love the fabric. They are meant to be ankle length but for me- at 5'1"- they are the perfect length with no hemming! I got the slate first and liked them so well that I also got the black. I love the fabric and they are so comfortable; I know I will wear oodles of times so I can (somewhat!) justify the price tag.

For spring, I had a long skirt and short top that I adored. I wore it for my daughter's graduation and felt so good in it.

A couple of years ago, I bought a soft black cardigan with subtle beads to wear at holiday time. To me it's a classic and I enjoy pulling it out each winter.

I spent time in Dillards last year trying on EF pieces and was delighted with their fit on my rectangular-almost-squareish short self. They didn't overwhelm me at all because they fit so well. Really, as if they were custom made for me.

At least in my local Dillards there are two EF sections. One is definitely matronly ala Alfred Dunner whereas the other section is far more arty/contemporary.

Hi Suz! thank you for chiming in with that. I read your post last nite and was so happy to see Joy's thoughts this morning - for people in my area of budget-land i would do just about anything to keep them from paying full retail for one of these pieces! I have nothing against paying full price as long 1) as it doesn't seriously compromise my ability to buy any other pieces for 6 months or longer or 2) it's a true investment piece (well made leather handbag of belt, real jewelry, hermes scarf, etc.) or 3) there is No Other Way i can get that piece, similar or better for less. In the case of EF pencil skirt you could get a gorgeous, custom fit copy made by a tailor for less than half.

Yes, i am a hard @zz about this in case you haven't noticed ;)

Joy, thank you for your great ideas on how to get some of these pieces without busting the budget. I found a lady with some similar strategies while searching about this last night. Sadly, i was on my phone and i can't find the page on my puter But here's a similar thread if any of you are REALLY into it:

http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?topic=732.0

The other reason to visit an actual store is to educate your hand and eye so you'll recognize similar quality at lower price points.

Really, we should get Dana (IK) to do a post on savvy shopping for higher priced items! I am sure we'd all learn a lot!

Una, unfortunately it is true about ladies schlepping around in ill-thought out EF ensembles. Another reason why all the styling advice makes sense - she doesn't want 'bad adverts' walking around, i'm sure! As another lady with a more 'unique' personal style, i've found it's truly invaluable to be able to evaluate pieces on their own merit, outside of the designer's image of their line. There's no designer out there who's line i'd wear wholesale, so in the end i have no other choice!

Best of luck all, steph

I've been an Eileen Fisher fan for years because of her wonderful fabrics (most of which are washable) and because her garments (at least used to be) are sewn in NYC, not overseas. Also, pieces from one season often go withthose from other seasons or even years, so that you can collect pieces that go together slowly. Nordstroms, Dillards and other department store often carry at least some pieces and they go on sale. I've bought some deeply discounted silk jersey tops at The Rack. Chicago has an EF outlet store.
Now, sadly, most of her things are too big for me unless they come in PP. Check consignment stores too. I do wish she made fewer ankle length pants and more long ones for PPL, and better skirt lengths too.

Steph, absolutely! I have gone into EF and her petites generally work for me in certain styles. She has some great asymmetric cuts and totally UWP fabrics. What's put me off are the prices and to an extent the mix-and-match elements of the pieces (color themes, etc.). To be honest, I know lots of women who wear her clothes in sets in a schlumpy. dowdy way.

I should try to get my head around that and think of them as stand-alone items.

I agree, Steph. It's the drape and the way the fabrics shape that makes it all work. IK is a good illustration of that. I know she scours Ebay for some of her EF stuff.

I think the quality is generally high. I would actually save up for one of the basic knee length pencil skirts or the pants. I think they'd be super versatile. And I like some of the layering pieces, too.

oh, i'm glad you all are interested :)

Una, i think EF's NYer ads are incredibly elegant - maybe even intimidatingly so ! that's what i love about these videos, they're got all shades, ages, and short round ladies, tall ladies with 'child-bearing hips' as my SIL Laura puts it, athletic builds, and so on. And i could totally see an EF pencil skirt or slim cropped ankle trou playing very nicely in your wardrobe. The luxury, flattery, and flexibility of her essentials really don't come across well in pix, you have to meet them in person.

re: petites. Suz said: "I do have a cardigan that Nancylee sent me, however, and surprisingly, it works really well."

i would encourage anyone to go into one of EF's boutiques and spend some time looking at the clothes - especially at the fabrics she uses. They are very unique, luxurious, and very cannily crafted to have a wonderful hand and drape. The reason many of these 'overwhelming' looking pieces can be successfully worn by smaller women (height as well as frame) is because EF designs them from fabrics which have a strong visual presence while at the same time being very thin and incredibly drapey. Thus, the fabric collapses around the body instead of adding a lot of bulk, and all the vertical lines (from the fabric gathering around the body) are "leaning" as well. I also notice that EF has a lot of cropped pieces - in a couple of the videos you can see what's cropped on a very tall woman worn at low hip by a shorter lady, and it works well on both.

Conversely, pieces like her pencil skirts and slimmer trousers are made from fabrics which have a crisper, more substantial feel. This creates a smoother line which flatters the wearer and provides a nice background for 'frosting' pieces. I'd been on the fence about her line for years. I finally went into one of her boutiques and as soon as i took a look at the fabrics i got it - silk jersey tees? It's impossible to find silk jersey in the first place, when you do it's black only and 50 bucks a yard! There's definitely justification for a lot of those prices, but i still can't afford it (much as DH might like me to run around topless cause i only have one skirt to wear ;)

In fact, i would encourage anyone to take a look at how the various pieces work on the different women in these videos for tips and ideas on how to style pieces for different looks and also for ideas on how to style pieces you might have difficulty with because of your own proportions.

Really, i'm not trying to write an EF commercial here! But i did like the concept of these videos, they are well done and you can learn quite a bit from studying them. Happy Evening! stpeh

Love the ad! I like some of the pieces, but they are very oversized in my experience, so that even xs is often quite big on my normally not xs self. Have not been in the actual shop in decades (used to go on the lower east side of Manhattan to rifle through the sales basket), so this is just based on pieces I have come across.

Thanks for sharing - really interesting. I can see how these pieces could work in a more avant garde wardrobe - especially if the fabrics are good. This style of clothing is copied by many lower end labels in Australia - especially for plus size & when worn as a "look" in cheap fabric & off colours it's not something I love.

Like Suz, i've reached the point in nailing down my real lifestyle, climate, personal style, and wardrobe size preferences to where i'm ready to commit to investing more time and cash in creating quality pieces. This includes a coordinating core of essentials. In preparation for this project (as i will likely sew the bulk of these pieces), i was doing research over at the Eileen Fisher website. Now, i don't think you'll see me sporting 'the Eileen Fisher look" anytime soon, not least due to her prices! But her essential core pieces are very well thought out.

And, to get to the title of this piece - she showcases a LOT of her clothing using ladies on her staff. These ladies are all ages, shapes, and sizes. Just as i suspected all these years, it really does help to visualize the possibilities! Even more than seeing how a piece works with different body shapes or complexions, i was excited to see how the different women styled the same pieces. I think it's tremendously well done and is a great example for other retailers to follow.

http://www.eileenfisher.com/Ei.....rchive.jsp

The link will take you to a page with four different short videos. We've all been pining for this type of diversity and i think this is a great approach!

What say ye, YLFers?
