Careful with that buying ahead. How much weight are you trying to lose? If it's more than 5 pounds, I'd say it's too much of a gamble because you can't be sure what your shape will be like. Of all the stuff I bought last year, 15 pounds heavier, the only things that fit properly are things like my boyfriend sweaters, coats and shoes.

I agree with Anya and missvee!

I've lost over a hundred pounds in the past few years, and you know what? Waiting to wear nice clothes actually had the effect of slowing down the process. I still have more pounds I'd like to lose, but I've really noticed that when I feel good in my clothes, it's *easier* to stick to my food plan.

Furthermore - I have done that thing where I've bought something a size smaller, or held onto something that was too small - it never works. I held onto a beautiful dress that my Mom had bought me years ago...was so looking foward to being able to fit into it again. Hmmph - I completely missed my chance. By the time I remembered to try it on again, it was too big.

With buying a pair of pants or something a size down (did that too), thinking I'd fit into them in mere weeks, somehow even though I did eventually "fit into" them, they didn't look right. You don't always know what your shape is going to be like a size or two down. What looks flattering (even if it's too small for now) might not be when you fit into it.

Personally, I'd order the next size up to try on - it could be that it's too big. That happens too - being in between sizes. It'll all depend on the brand. If it fits and you love it, then I think you should get it. <--sorry for being a total enabler :)

One last thing - going down sizes also depends on where you're starting from. When I started out losing weight (wearing a plus size 3X), it took a good 20+ pounds to drop a size. These days (size 8-10), if I drop five pounds or so, I go down another size. This might help you decide whether to get the leather jacket now, or wait.

It's not going to hurt to try on the larger size, and Nordstrom is very good about returns. I wouldn't recommend buying something that doesn't "quite" fit - in my experience, when I did this, the item didn't always look as good as I thought it would by the time it did fit. This is especially true for things like jackets, coats, tailored dresses and slacks. I was ok with buying smaller sizes of things like sweaters and even jeans in most cases.

Looking forward to hearing what you decide.

you can always buy both and see which one fits in a month or so...
but buying ahead of losing weight is always tricky.

I have to say I did keep a pair of jeans from the NAS that were a tad snug, and did lose a couple pounds so they fit great now...but it's always a risk.

You have to look good with the body you have now, so really your decision to buy or wait should depend on what your wardrobe is like now. If you have some nice clothes already then don't bother with any major purchases until you are more satisfied with your weight. But if you've been putting off buying clothes for a while, and your wardrobe is grim, then buy it in the size that fits you now and wear it like mad in the next few months!

I say buy something that fits NOW. Weight-loss journey is only made better by pretty clothes. And if it takes a few months ( I'm assuming you're not on those crash diets) you will have a few months of fabulousness. Why wait? You can reward yourself with new purchases when you reach your goal weight.

I think it depends on *when* you plan to lose weight.
Is it a vague "I need to lose a few pounds" in which case I'd get the jacket in the size that fits now as you *might* not lose weight or are you already dieting? in which case I'd give expensive purchases a miss until you are at goal weight x

Well, I'm holding off on buying a really good pair of work jeans, hoping to lose a bit of weight. So if I practice what I preach, I guess my advice is to wait...

It is hard to pass up a beloved item knowing it might not be there later, but you can't predict how the weight loss will affect your body. The same garments might not be as flattering after you get smaller.

I really love the Guess leather jacket on sale at Nordstrom's. I tried a large on in he store and it zipped but was too small. I have been thinking of buying the next size up online...however I plan on losing weight in the future. What do you all think? Should I buy it, then if I lose weight it just won't fit or should I pass and wait? I'm not sure if a leather jacket can be brought in, my boyfriend thinks I should wait until I lose weight to buy anything big.
