Great thread. I just want to say, it's getting more and more expensive just to keep things status quo. It's no longer about getting ahead and looking better.

Hair - now that it's short, it's cuts every 6-8 weeks, and color about 3x a year. I also have the expense of the Harklinikken treatment that I have discussed on Off-Topic. (continue to be extremely pleased with results)

Mani/Pedi - monthly. It's the lowest cost pampering available. I had my first pedi in my 40's so came to it late in life. Only clear polish - if any- on fingers, color on toes. With Angie on the well-groomed natural nails team.

Waxing - I discovered waxing in Brazil in my 20's. I could not believe it! In those days you used to go into a big common room and they'd slap you down on a table 2 feet on each side from the next one, and slather that wax on. It was so inexpensive there, but here it was out of reach cost-wise in younger years. I have DIY'd upper leg, bikini line, pits and lip for years, but if going on a vacation usually get professional help. There have been burns along the way.... As others have mentioned, hair has lessened in middle age, which is one of the only benefits of this period of life!

Facials - maybe once a year if at a spa. I really love it, but it's not a regular thing. Have been investing in laser light treatments (BBL - broadband light) for sun damage. Expensive and a little painful but the results are excellent.

Guys are so lucky.

HAIR- I get my haircut and highlighted on a regular basis. Other than that I don't do much. Having said that I do feel as though I need to step up my game if I want to have a more polished look.

NAILS- When I worked in NYC years ago I used get my nails done every week at lunchtime with the girls from work we used to go to a small place on Fifth Ave and it was fun. Once I got married and had children there was no time. Then they grew up and I started again at a reputable local salon but got a horrible infection and ended having nasty growths frozen off about 8 of my fingers. It was torture , I've had three babies and I think this was worse lol.
Now I occasionally go and have them painted if I have a special function but I never allow my cuticles to be cut.

FEET- I had a similar problem with pedicures and take care of my feet myself.

EYEBROWS- I've had several waxes in the past but the last one burnt me so that's a no go also. I have been plucking them and had my daughter help but I think I need a professional to give me a shape that I can follow, I'm afraid as from above you can see I've had some bad experiences.

I plan to get some skin help from a Dermatologist this year, need to schedule now as it takes months to get appointments here.
Finally talked my husband into going to my salon, he got a great haircut much better than the knife and fork jobs that he had been having. I'll have to work on him getting eyebrow help, baby steps.
My two sons both have beards and get their hair cut very short and need to go regulary to keep the style. They have every product for beard care known to man!
My daughter has a haircut when she comes home for a weekend from NYC and other than that does nothing as she refuses to pay NYC prices lol.

Haircut every 6-8 weeks and DIY the rest.
I would or shall I say will be happy to invest in a fancy skin treatment involving new fangled devices but have not gotten there yet. I don't do my nails, although sometimes I think I should start. Pedicures are a new thing for me but only in the summer. Brows I do myself, just tweezing the strays. I do use various skin care potions and treatments at home and definitely focus on that.

This thread makes me feel pretty high maintenance lol!

I get foils and cut every 10-12 weeks.

I like to look well groomed and have a job that requires a fair amount of public exposure. My nails are naturally really terrible - they break off and don't grow at all. They are always messy, and have always been like this. So I get a manicure with shellac every 2 weeks, or SMS every 3 weeks. I know a lot of people find shellac hard on nails, but I still find it far better than my natural nails! I usually get a pedicure every second visit. In my climate, I wear sandals 10 months a year, so a pedi is a must for me.

I used to always wax, but as I've gotten older I do have a lot less hair so now I just shave occasionally. I have had a bit of laser but wasn't a major fan so I don't bother now.

I get my brows done every six weeks or so - never quite often enough!
I don't get facials as I am scared of upsetting my delicate skin. I'm pretty good with at home care for my skin though, and I think that's working well for the time being.

A mix of both...
Hair - my hair is pretty low maintenance and I just wash and go. I do go for trims every few months but don't really style it otherwise. But then I kind of like the long, messy hair look.
Facials - pretty common to get professional facials here and I do get one every couple months. Also try masks and other skin care goodies at home.
Threading - brows and upper lip every 2-3 weeks. Only one beautician is allowed to touch my brows :)
Mani & pedis - don't do Manis but really enjoy pedicures, both the pro and DIY kind. My toe nails are usually always painted.
Waxing - always hated the feel of the wax on my skin, so it's razors for me!

It's common to call beauticians home here for facials, threading, massages etc. Super convenient and quite inexpensive. So I do that as well as go to the salon.

I get my hair cut when it starts to lose it's shape, 6-8 weeks depending on the season, and the rest, eyebrows, minimal waxing, and nails, just neat, no polish, I do at home because none of those things could wait months to be addressed and I don't enjoy salons enough to visit them more often.

First facial was my last, not for me, and I don't color my hair.

Haircut- once in 8 weeks. I don’t color my hair. I buy shampoo and other hair products from Sephora.
DIY - mani and pedi, I have very thin skin and always get cuts from professionals. I also use only clear polish, top coat usually, no color.
DIY - eyebrows, just can’t find anyone who would do it better.
No waxing, I’m too hairless :)
Used to do facials twice a year but gave up.

I trim my DH’s bushy eyebrows once in a couple weeks!

I get my hair cut every 8 weeks and colored every 4 weeks.
I get mani/pedi's every 4-6 weeks. Like Angie, no color on my nails but I like the nail maintanance.
I get my brows shaped about every 4 months and DIY in between.
I also get waxing done every four weeks.
I get facials 2-3 times a year and go to a dermatologist every 6 months.
I think I might be high maintenance (my husband has always suspected this but I am not telling him it has been confirmed;).

Massage - every six ish weeks

Nails - shellac painted nails every two weeks for about four months a year, pedicure once or twice a year. I paint my own toenails regularly.

Facial - rarely.

Waxing/Hair removal - DIY. I did used to go to a salon but my brows need less tidy up now.

Males in house - one gets waxed by another one (who likes inflicting the pain) and gets his brows trimmed by me. One plucks his brows in the middle.

I know several males who get waxing of legs or chest or other parts. My nail technician sees a few males for manis and pedis without polish.

I actually am a professional and so is my daughter . She is also a skincare specialist.
I am however super low maintenance and don’t fuss much .
I am also like Angie ...of the hairless variety , so no problem there . I color my hair a bit and add lowlights . No special skin care regime., and gave up artificial nails last year when I retired .
I enjoyed working with and on people for 40 yrs. but I hate to be fussed with .

When I was working I would go for more professional grooming services. It was a way to pamper myself and to unwind after a stressful week. I had a manicure every week and a pedicure every 2 weeks. I had my eyelashes tinted about once a month and my eyebrows as needed. I rarely had any shaping done to my brows.
I did have some waxing done but only if I was going on vacation and my bathing suit required it. I am not very hairy. I can go for a long long time before hair shows up.
I had my hair cut every 2 months.
Now I still get my hair cut every 2 to 3 months but I don't get manicure and pedicures as often. I miss that pampering but I live in a rural setting and it doesn't always fit in with my life.

Right now only haircuts/color and eyebrow waxing. I have had other areas waxed but think it's easier to just shave myself if/when needed. I've also had nice manicures & pedicures in the past but I'm picky about places and don't really need the expense right now. I'm interested in getting Botox done for the first time, as the lines on my forehead are becoming quite obvious.

I do pay happily for massages fairly often when I have a good person to go to; I'd much rather spend on that and DIY other things since you can't really reproduce that experience on yourself.

Nothing, only haircuts. Had a pedicure once in my life with my girlfriend at a training place- she organised this. I didn't think they did the nail polish as well as I do. But I only do it a few times a year for special events or on holiday.

Hair - professionally done every 8 weeks. Booked immediately at the end of the previous appt,

Brows - professionally done every quarter, with DIY in between. VERY happy with the magnifying mirror we installed in the MBA during the remodel. Now I can see those little suckers!

Nails - professionally done every 6-8 weeks. It’s me time, and only takes an hour.

Skin care is a new priority for this year. Dermatology appt next month!

Em - lots of men are into grooming and self care!

DH is growing a beard! Woohoo! And has agreed to go to 'The Men's Room' which is our local really decent barbershop, when the time is right. The 3 barber's are women! (DH has been frequenting 'The Hairport' - cheap and cheerful, results vary.) I consider it a victory that I've got him using sunscreen before he goes out to play golf!

The DS's (20 somethings) definitely care about grooming. They are in every 6 weeks for cuts. DS#2 has a beard and is very furry. He gets his mono-brow tended. He also gets mani's and pedis because his work and sports (judo - jiu jitsu) are hard on his hands and feet. Both boys have very specific preferences for a salon brand shampoo, and for hair and beard products, including combs, brushes, and scissors. Their friends all seem to care about grooming, and self expression through clothing.

DS#2 is interested in some laser treatment for body hair because he is SO very furry, it is hard to maintain. He doesn't want to be bare, but would like to knock the quantity down a peg. It is something he plans to save $ for once he is better established in work. DS#1 refers to his modest chest pelt as 'the golden fleece'. He has lots of self confidence. :-)

My 57 YO brother looks like Oscar the Grouch if he doesn't get his uni brow tended to! It is the fiercest I have ever seen and makes him look like he is scowling, yet he is a man with the sweetest disposition! He started in his teens.

I'll support Angie's comment on men shaving. Not only cyclists, but swimmers, too!

@lyn67 I trim dh's brows too, he used to wax "when he was looking for a wife." He goes to a hairdresser too, since he keeps his hair long :)
Am I the only one going for brows? Im scared to try to pluck them myself!

I have seen a lot of young men with unnaturally looking brows lately and was wondering about that trend.

em, actually, I know men who have their uni-brows waxed! Perhaps upon the request of their SO Greg goes to my hairdresser and not a barber.

I see a lot of hairless men in my hood, which means they probably wax. They can't all be naturally hairless, right? Lots of male cyclists wax their legs too.

Oh, may I be I the only one who does DH's mustache AND BROW(!) grooming at home after he cames back from a cut?? He usually forgets to ask for but I will always offer myself at home! I simple cannot deprive him looking 10 yrs younger and so very fresh after my job!:-)

Has anyone had LVL lashes done? I'm a relatively low maintenance person but recently booked this as I feel like my lashes and brows are invisible.

Thanks, everyone! The only pro service (other than hair) that I regularly indulge in is IPL treatment for sun spots on my face. I am obsessive about sunscreen now, but I was a sun worshipper in my youth. Every winter I have two laser treatments - the spots turn darker temporarily and then fall off. Worth it!
