Helen - I don't *think* that's available (though will of course defer to Greg's expertise) - but you can "favorite" a thread that you are interested in following up on, which can help me track replies a bit better separate from the very high-volume, fast pace of the rest of the forum.
I know that doesn't directly address your question, but it can help as an alternative.

Hi Greg! Just bumping this to ask a question (as a newbie) about replies within a thread. Is there a function to let me know when someone has replied to a comment I made? Just wondering, because at the moment I am simply re-reading threads that I remember posting in, looking to see if I need to respond to anyone. If not, no probs! Just asking in case I missed this capability! Thanks.

Maybe a "preview" button that allows us to see how our post would display - similar to the option Blogger has when you are posting a comment or uploading a blog entry - could also be an alternative to an expanding text box?

I am totally one of those who would appreciate an option like that, as I'm a wordy person who *tries* to self-edit for length.

ITA with Scarlet. Greg, the text area doesn't need to grow with the post. But if there was an option to proofread in the posted format, we would see what our post was going to look like before we submitted it.

Actually, I have this problem too that I sometimes don't realize how much I have written. Also, I don't know why, but I find it easier to proofread in the posted format.

Interesting! This particular issue never occurred to me, but I will think about it when redesigning the post form. One tricky trade off is that the size of the text area is limited, so if I make the text inside it resemble the way the final post looks then it will start scrolling a lot sooner. But perhaps I can get around that somehow.

Maybe the text area should grow with the post or something.

Definitely agree with the idea that it would be nice to have more "what you see is what you get" in the form.

Thanks for this input. I love hearing it.

Is there any way that on future redesigns and tweaks that the text box members type into when writing a post or comment be the same width as the final column will appear once it is submitted?

I have a horrible time gauging how long my actual post appears to others. I know it is difficult to read long posts, but obviously read my own work faster. Without that visual gauge of length I often don't get the cue that I have gone too wordy and need to be more concise.

Quite obviously a silly and nitpicky request, but it is just an idea that might make the site more functional for users that obviously have spacial reasoning difficulties. LOL
