Thanks. That's pretty strange. I'll definitely take a closer look at this when I'm done with a couple of other issues.

Cleared the cache and cookies at home, hit shift-reload. Confirmed that I got HTTP 200s (not 304s) for forum-topic.css (version 27) and roles-16.png & roles-24.png.

Check out the new result! #laughcry

More seriously, though, it's looking more and more like it's a problem with my machine. If you want to keep pursuing this, I'm happy to send diagnostics for as long as you want. OTOH, I'm also happy to live with a few misaligned sprites and UI elements if I know that it's just me. Let me know whether you want to proceed, and if so, how.

( ETA: OS X @ 10.8.3 )

I'm at work now, so I don't have the full OS version string available, but it should be up-to-date: I did a full round of updates last night.

Interestingly, I don't have spriting issues on my work instance of Chrome, which is the out-of-date 25.0.1364.152 (OS: 10.8.2). And, now that I look closer at screenshot #3 (narrow mode), I see that the margins on the left don't match what I'm seeing here at work. Collectively, that sounds awfully like I've got bad CSS at home.

I did shift-reload when I grabbed the screenshots this morning, but I'll try blowing away the cache tonight.

The threshold is a trade off because if you switch down to narrow mode too quickly then the page margins are large. Not to say that I won't tweak it.

Re #1... Which version of OS X are you on? Also, have you tried blowing out the cache?

No luck. I still see the issue on the updated Chrome 25.0.1364.172 (see screenshot #1).

Regarding the issue with "narrow mode": how are you calculating when you need to re-layout the page? On my browser, the thresholds don't make sense for the UI elements it's trying to display. Screenshot #2 is Safari on top, Chrome on bottom; both windows are ~860px wide; you can see that the ads+recent posts force the categories widget significantly offscreen. Screenshot #3 is again Safari on top/Chrome on bottom, but the windows are slightly shrunk to ~845px and the categories are visible again
I was worried you'd call me out on the out-of-date Chrome version; I usually wait until the update is urgent to apply it. I'm a software developer and really ought to know better about applying patches, but my company makes me update all the time and one gets sick of buggy updates, ya know? :)

I'll update tonight and let you know the results.

Charmian, what an awesome bug report.

Chrome 25 is what I'm using 90% of the time, so this is strange. I do notice that you're using 155, and not the latest release (which is 172).

I can't repro on 172 or a much older version I have on another Mac, so I think a good first step would be to get on the same version. Will it be possible for you to upgrade to 172? Chrome normally does auto updates, but perhaps you have that switched off or something?

Greg
I'd PM you, but I couldn't figure out how to attach this screenshot. These were noted in Chrome for Mac, 25.0.1364.155. No repro in Safari 6.0.2.

-- The first issue was badge spriting (see screenshot). This is the only instance I've seen so far; other icons seem fine.

-- The second is that Chrome 25 consistently seems stuck in the widest mode; I don't get the narrow mode that I see in Safari when I play with window size.

Hope this helps; I'm happy to pull more diagnostics if you tell me what you need.
