I agree with you, Scarlet--I find the first dress way more appealing. Nice fabric, drape, and details! The only thing that would give me pause personally (other than I'm trying to get away from black myself) is that I'd want to wear something on my arms a lot of the time, and I'm not sure how a jacket or cardigan would work over the shoulder ruffles.

ETA: A shawl could work, though, if you needed something. Okay, no reservations other than the color. And black is so versatile for accessorizing!

I really like that first one too. But I am also a total black "lady". I think that is the type of dress that you could totally dress down. In the cooler months you could throw on a plaid flannel shirt. In the summer you could wear sneakers or colorful flats and a colorful necklace. In the lab, you could throw a denim or chambray shirt over it....or a vest. I think that if you strictly wear it as a "silk dress" that it harder to pull off. Treat it as a black sheath or long tank dress.

The only concern is if you think that black is just too severe. On someone your age and your skin tone ( you seem rosy in the pics ) I think that you could get away with it. But if you really think that you would shy away from wearing it, then don't do it..it will haunt you in the closet. So it really comes down to that, I think.

I really like the first dress, and think the booties would edge it up even more. As long as you can have your arms uncovered @ your workplace, you should be fine.

I saw this only online so far. I love the style and would love to wear it as styled with booties. It's made out of silk, so I would handwash. Black is maybe not my best color because of my pale skin, but this reminds me so much of a look Sarah (TX) wore once that I loved. Maybe I am not thinking clearly? I know something like the second dress (cheaper and viscose) would be easier to wear because the style is more conventional, but I just don't love it as much. I think the real issue here is defying my environmental norm at work... Well that and my insecurity about black.
