I love the idea of them too but have the same trouble as you with finding a theme that I like in a colour and fit that I like. Plus for summer I won’t wear poly cotton. And that rules out a lot. I often look for dog themed tees but usually they focus on particular breeds. I saw one on Etsy that said “I just want all the dogs”. I would have bought it for sure if it had been pure cotton. Maybe having one made is the answer.

I hear you on this - I also want a few more graphic tees but they have to really feel like me. My one favorite is a J Crew kid's shirt from years back with a big print of a roaring lion and the word LOUD. I love it because a) I am very quiet, and the irony makes me laugh, b) it annoys me that it was marketed to boys but not girls, so I'm reclaiming it.

I don’t have many graphic tees. The ones I do are relevant to me, or our family: airplane mode, AV8TOR (a gift from my brother), Choose Kind and a puffin with a wrench (our company logo). I like graphic tees quite a lot, but I don’t have many. I enjoy seeing them on others and wonder if they have a story behind them.

LOL Rachy! Yes, I absolutely relate to the comments about Paris tees and others that are really prevalent at retail. My most mainstream tees are my favorite baseball team's logo, and my ancient "Pugs, not Drugs" tee -- otherwise, I suspect most of mine would seem pretty obscure to most people, and that's fine with me!

That’s such an interesting question. I really don’t like random tees with things like ‘I love Paris’ on them and then the picture of the Eiffel Tower and the postcard. And I would never do Hello Kitty. On the other hand, I wear my Hella Kitty tee shirt, which is a shout-out to Oakland CA.

What I need to do is find my Free Martha tee. That’s the best one ever. It got the best reactions from the 14-yr-old Mormon elders wandering my ghetto. (Boy their parents had great faith in God to send them in... jus’ sayin’...)

Haha Janet, that’s just the point. One person’s poseur is another’s perfect match. I nearly bought a tee with Coca - cola graphic on it because at least I drink a lot of ( diet) Coke! So there are brands, flowers, animals, music and other things I either would or would not relate to.

I’m literally LOL at Lisa’s comment about John Deere hats and band tees because I wear both with zero self-consciousness or poseur factor (depending on where I am!). Dad worked for Deere for 40 years and I ride on Deere equipment every time I’m at the ranch, and, well, 30 years in music radio so I earned the right to wear band tees whenever I like. So this really made me laugh. I totally understand why others would feel inauthentic in any of that.

Hehe, when I was cleaning out the holding zone I snapped a photo of my graphic tee collection... Plus my newest acquisition, from a friend who sent this to me. Jack White has a company called Warstic that makes baseball bats, and our friend played in a tournament with him and sent me this tee from their company. I love it!

I can totally relate. I am very picky about what goes on a graphic tee also, and it seems like whenever I find a graphic that I like, it is on a black or gray shirt, and I really don't want to wear a black or gray shirt in the summer. So I've pretty much given up on it.

I have a couple of t-shirts with "things" on them, including a star one very similar to what you've shown, one with a huge sequinned eye (never wear it, why did I buy it?) and only one with a word on it (MAGNIFIQUE, which I hesitate to wear, for obvious reasons ) . I would no more wear a band t than wear a John Deere trucker hat Not equating the two at all, but they both fall into that "poser" category for me.

I have a star tee almost exactly like that — from a few years ago, and I think it was a whopping $10 at Marshall’s. It’s so soft! That’s another thing I look for — soft lightweight tees. I don’t like the thick stiff ones.

I like the idea of graphic tees but am really picky about fit/cut of knit tops. I don’t wear crewnecks so that cuts out about 85% of the options. Come to think of it, I don’t care for short sleeved tees either so I guess I’d be looking for graphic tanks (or, in a pinch, cap sleeves). I like your DIY idea. But, I can’t even find plain versions of what I’d like as a starting point. Anyway, in an ideal world I’d go for something biology related, or literary puns. Oh, you are reminding me that I wanted a Ruth Bader Ginsburg tee! I should check Etsy, maybe there are some options spurred by the movie that’s out.

I bought these two recently, but returned the sweatshirt. The map itself felt kind of icky. The owl is right up my alley, of course, but so was the map since I majored in Geography in college. These are both from Macy’s.

A graphic top has to have meaning for me. Also, no come ons or double entendres.

I can’t wear a random rock band, it’d have to be an artist I follow or was from my youth or something. And I live champagne but won’t wear “ tome for wine” or champagne out of the house— though might be fun for just DH and me.

I was looking for photos! Did you mean to include some?

I have a TON of graphic tees. Some are novelty (i.e., an astronaut's helmet with "I NEED SPACE" printed across it), but most are rock/concert/band tees, and some of them date back 30+ years. I've even given some away (or my stepsons took them over years ago, I still miss two of my favorite old tees, Geraldine Fibbers and Dumptruck, sigh). The ideal ones are a combination of 1) a band I like (obviously), 2) a good fit (preferably girl-cut tees), 3) a tee color I like, and 4) a graphic I like. I like to buy band tees at shows because merch sales are a big part of how touring bands make money. I've been pickier of late because I have so many, and sometimes I'll buy my husband a shirt instead of me, because he wears them pretty much every day now that he's out of the corporate grind.

I almost bought a "FUTURE IS FEMALE" tee the other day, but I was between sizes (there was a big difference between the S and M, and the M was just a bit too baggy for my taste).

I like juxtaposed casual or going- out outfits with graphic tees or sweatshirts, but I find graphics hard because I have so many criteria for what should Not be on them, for me. The graphic or picture or word or phrase , if there is one, would have to be something that that really relates to me in some way or is fun ( but in a relatable way) or I would feel like a poser. Then add in color, fit and the fact that I only get up the energy to look a few places and well, it doesn’t happen.

I recently got the bug to try again , maybe stimulated by my tulle and metallic skirts and other things.

Here are some keepers and rejects:

First, Airplane Mode. I think Mainelady showed this and it was out of stock forever. Plus I told myself I should avoid black. Then I saw the gray version and for a sec the black flickered into stock but I didn’t look at sizes , just ordered the gray because thought gray better color me and the more subtle contrast graphic should be good, but it looked longer ( I thought I recalled it being a shorter boxy style) than I want for full skirts. Still I thought
I’d try it for jeans.
Well, the gray just did nothing for me. Color was not good, graphic was barely visible so sent it back. Kicked myself for not pursuing black.
After weeks, black came back into stock so I got it. It would be more versatile for me if shorter and boxier but I’m keeping. Will wear with jeans and tgat styling of pulling it down over a fuller skirt and maybe a couple of pencil skirts—not for work though.
Next is Off Duty. This graphic and colors are great for me and I had high hopes.
The sweatshirt is SO close, but IRL the shirt part is really puckered / gathered onto the band rather than appearing kind of straight as in the stock photo, and that aspect is just very unflattering in the size I need. Otherwise it is perfect, so sad. I kept it for awhile, in denial, and even considered having it altered with side vents or removing the band but eventually said, Next!

SO— the Off Duty tee. It runs big and has oversized sleeves which puts it in a different how- to- wear category. I sent the big sizes back and was done with it, but when sweatshirt didn’t work I tried an even smaller size, which looks better, but is shorter than a true T for me, so jury is still out as I need to do tryons with bottoms.
Finally—Stars tee. Not a tru “ graphic “ in the usual sense but fun for summer. The aft navy and off white are good for my coloring and go with my typical summer casual palette for shorts and pants of khakis, olives, , gray, denim and with linen and olive jackets.

I’ve been thinking it’d be easier to go to a tee shirt shop ( ones where you can bring your own garments) and have something made, than to wait for random planets to align !

So, that’s my graphic adventure so far! I would imagine graphics are all very individual- specific, as to what resonates, what is acceptable/ unacceptable. What’s your story?
