I hate high rise pants on me, too. I look for modern rise. Not too high and not so low you see crack when I sit or bend over. Crack is wack.

I'm not sure how dressy you want to go but I tried on this dress and really liked it. I didn't end up getting it because it wasn't short enough for me (I like minis) and I wasn't in the mood to alter it but it seemed comfortable.

Janet - Polterwang is the perfect word for a pair of problem pants I had. I knew it wasn't camel toe because they weren't tight! They weren't returnable as I bought them on a trip from a local boutique - note to self don't buy non-returnable black things that you try on in an underlit fitting room.

I finally figured out it was too much fabric. I took out the crotch seams and increased the crotch "scoop" and sewed them back up. It made them wearable.

I've been having this problem with lots of pants later. What is up with that? We may need a polterwang thread for how to avoid this.

I have to credit a YLF participant from a few years ago for the introduction to that term. It made me laugh at the time and I’ve never forgotten it! I get it in probably 80% of the pants I try on.

I just went back and measured my dresses and have decided to rule out if it’s not at least 39” long (and it may need to be a bit longer than that to hit my knees). I have shorter dresses if I want to wear them. I’m holding out exclusively for knee length or longer.

Oh I'm right here with you all. Too high a waist brings back bad 70's styles from high school. No thank you. I hate on-line shopping as much as I like it - so I don't do it It's a huge time suck, and as frustrating as b&m shopping. Where is the middle ground? I want to know what a polterwang is - as Janet mentioned.......*runs off to google it*

Gigi - there’s high rise, and then there’s under your bra rise. I’ll keep searching for that sweet spot that’s not crazy high. I’ve got a long torso, so theoretically high rise could be flattering. Just need the right one to come along I guess.

Hmm, I've been trying to find some high-rise bottoms to go with some shorter tops that I have, and it's rare that I find anything that even covers my belly button! I can't imagine three inches above the belly button. Ha ha, on short-waisted me, that would be practically up to my bra line...

Like karen13, I wear mostly petites', and not many stores carry them. So I am a big online shopper. I try to do as torontogirl suggests: order from places that have a store not far from me so that I can return in-store.

Texstyle - I’ve got one EF dress. It’s not really a summer dress though, and it’s quite a bit above knee length. This is the one I’ve considered trying, but haven’t. It looks like with the silk it could be a bit dressier but still pretty relaxed.

If the $$$ weren't so high, I would try these for myself but I know better since I don't really wear dresses. I imagine both would be longer than shown on the models. Very similar style.

Texstyle - a simple sheath cotton dress with minimal wrinkles sounds good. So many of the shift dresses are too short. I feel kid like these days when I wear dresses too short.

Janet - often the rise on pants is too long on me, leading to what I call “thigh grab” where it fits awkwardly on the thigh. I think you’re right on dresses - they’re often too junior. That’s what I’m feeling. I don’t have a big shopping list, but I am interested in trying new styles.

I’m right there with you. I can relate to ALL of what you wrote!

High rise just looks ridiculous on me and is not terribly comfortable either — in roomier styles the crotch often ends up hanging low and results in the dreaded polterwang effect, OR if the fit is closer, the waistband comes up way too high, too close to my bra strap and makes me feel even more short-waisted than I already am. Frankly, I don’t think the extreme high rises are terribly flattering on most women, so on someone built like me, they’re even more problematic. I welcome more MID rises!

I’m also with you on the dress shopping. I can always use some good casual summer dresses, but casual summer dress searches always result in a bunch of spaghetti straps, minis or maxi lengths with very little that reaches my knees, and in general way too much “juniors” styling.

Fortunately, I think I have enough of what I need to get me into spring and summer without much shopping, if any. I wish you luck on your search for these HEWIs (that should NOT be HEWIs in my opinion!). I think it’s great that you’re being particular and not settling.

I'm with you on the high rise issue - they do not work for me. It's just not my personal style. Besides, I can't stand all that material on my torso, esp. in the heat. I think I prefer a mid-rise these days and still have a few slightly low rise but not too low.

I still do 99% of my shopping online too. I stick with a few brands for jeans lately - for bargain jeans I still use Gap (only when they have a great sale on jeans). For thicker cool weather jeans I stick with my KUTs and for figure flattery, I like my AGs and some older Levis. That said, I haven't added any KUT or AGs because they don't always fit the same. I *wish* I could duplicate my KUT Catherine Slim BFs but they changed them and now they just don't the same.

I wish I could recommend something for spring/summer dresses but I am not very good at dress shopping. A really simple sheath in a cotton blend that doesn't wrinkle easily may be an elusive goal. The one I got last year in sort of a pique cotton meets most of that description but I haven't found any others.

ETA: The dress is much longer on me than on the model - it makes it close to my knees.

Yes, agreed with that - I think the optimal scenario is when you can buy online, but easily return to a b&m shop as needed. Or try on in store, and then have your pick of colors, etc. online.

Torontogirl - I do get tired of the return cycle and notice I find better tops in person. I have better success with bottoms and shoes online, but often need to see fit in tops and dresses in store. I’m sure I’ll just continue with a bit of both, as long as I continue to be vigilant about making returns promptly.

I agree! It's a rare day that I find what I'm looking for at the mall - online shopping is just so much easier. Even my 70+ year old parents have given up and taken to buying their clothes on Amazon It's the way of the future! Good luck with your hunting.

JAileen - Ha Ha. I tried on a few long sweaters this year, just cause I like seeing them on others. No need though, plus it’s not my best look either. But in combo with grandpa pants...

Karen13 - I remember trying on these pants a couple of years ago. A good fit if I recall, and I ruled them out due to the high rise and got Athleta linen crop pants instead. They might be as high rise as I could go though, so won’t rule them out automatically if I see them again. That’s definitely the kind of coverage I’m going for.

Murph11 - I’m glad I’m not trying to replenish my whole wardrobe. More, I’m trying to see if there are some new to me silhouettes in summer bottoms. Plus, I’m on the lookout for short sleeve tops all year round.

Cardiff girl - yep. My body shape has changed so much, but I need to be patient to find the right things to make me feel fab and look good.

Aurore - yes and yes. Cutting in and rolling. No thanks. I remember when I had a svelte middle and wore higher rise jeans. I never found jeans comfortable at that point in my life. Plus, the lack of stretch in jeans was uncomfortable for me. I’m happy how jeans have progressed, and I’m sticking with mid rise unless I find something else works better.

Kkards - you mean high rise doesn’t come to others belly buttons? That makes a little more sense. I find Feb-Apr in stores is best. I definitely like early spring for shopping.

Sterling - I’m laughing too. Feel free to join in. I really don’t take clothes not fitting personally. Just wondering where I’m going to find the right things. Luckily? my persistence is no joke.

so interesting, and this is why sizing/fit is so hard ...i've been adding high rise pants, but have yet to try one that actually hits at my belly button...everybody is just so slightly different.....i'd keep looking...i know that where i live spring clothing is barely out in stores, last weekend when i was at the mall,i saw lots and lots of empty tables and hanging spaces instead of clothing

I can definitely relate to the rise issue! Low-rise pants are usually unflattering for my silhouette, but rises higher than the belly button are difficult as well. I find them very uncomfortable when sitting - and even tend to roll when the fabric is too thin. And unfortunately such high rises are everywhere!

Yep the high rise is a challenging look if you don’t like to emphasise your mid zone and let’s face it most women at some point in their life don’t feel like doing that.

The struggle is real. I just can’t get used to the higher rise (often labeled mid-rise). They may look ok, but they feel horribly frumpy to me.

I am very fair-skinned and burn so easily, and I hate sunscreen. So I am always looking for cool long sleeves and full coverage pants. I bought two pairs of these pants last summer, but linen does wrinkle like crazy - I find I didn't reach for the sand colored ones as much as the navy.

And I feel your pain on B&M - I'm also petite with a wide-width foot. I hate buying on-line and returning, but as fewer and fewer stores carry these sizes, I am steeling myself to return more.

I went to the mall today for the first time in a while. I went into 5-6 stores and came home empty handed. Angie’s talking today about shopping early for spring for more covered clothing resonates with me. That’s what I did last year, and quite a few pieces have held up from last year, so I need less this year.

A couple thoughts - high rise pants seem to abound right now. I’m looking for looser legged pants instead of jeans. I don’t like low rise, but these high rise pants make me look like a grandpa. They come up at least 3 inches over my belly button. I wear tops out, not tucked in, but I’m going to struggle with this silhouette. I guess I may get used to the look, but I haven’t found anything flattering in this waistline to date.

I only need clothing that works for over 100 degrees. That’s a tough order to get good, but cool coverage. I would love to shop only in B & M stores, but I must have tried on over 30 items, and wasn’t even tempted. If I’m to dress myself, I don’t see how I can do it without turning to online shopping.

ETA - Angie may be on a roll finding dresses this year, but I’m in year 3 of having a tough go finding what I’m looking for in dresses. Sleeves, knee length, and not sweltering. Not too casual or too dressy. I am trying not to hit the stores too often, so I’m not coming across them organically. I will likely focus on skirts instead, as they are sometimes easier to find.
