Know anyone who went last year who might have posted photos to Facebook? Or who could send you some snaps to show mum?

You might have better luck getting mum to pay for it if you pitch it as a dress for more than one event, something more appropriate to your future life as a fully-fledged adult. Something you'd need for attending weddings? Events at uni?

But if you buy your own clothes, then shop on!

ABC has offered some great suggestions. I hope that you can find a solution. Would your mother be willing to call the school administration to get confirmation? That way she might be willing to move forward with your dress.

Have a heart to heart with your mom and try to figure out why she thinks you need to wear the uniform. Express your concerns and everything you just mentioned. Open, honest communication is the only route to go. Try to be patient. Go into the conversation in a calm mood, don't jump to conclusions, don't immediately try to defend your position. Let her talk - then calmly explain where you're coming from and see how your mom reacts. I'm guessing this is just a case of bad communication and hopefully a good chat can clear things. Good luck.

My mother and I got into a very big argument over this.

In my school, seniors are the only ones not required to wear uniform. And so, the dinner being a semi-formal, students-only event I thought it perfectly fine to just buy a new dress...My mother on the other hand believes I am supposed to wear my SCHOOL UNIFORM. Nobody else is wearing theirs!
I don't know where she got this idea, and it's not like I even have a uniform - I gave it to my sister.

What am I supposed to wear now? I can't convince her not hire a uniform, and there is no way I'm wearing my dress from my school ball but no other dress I have meets the dress code requirements. Either way I feel I'm just going to be humiliated at the end of it all.

Is it better to go in uniform? Or should I use the money to buy a dress? I'd borrow one except no-one I know is my size besides my sister.
