I spent yesterday cleaning my office (I think at least 100 lbs of paper are now out of there, but that's a story for another thread), and I took a little time to look through a couple of boxes of old family photographs. It made me miss my mom and dad, but brought back good memories. Now, you've brought back another one: when I was about 12 or so, I found a stash of old 78 records from the 40s, and my friend (still one of my BFFs) and I put them on the stereo in the living room. Mom came in and showed us how to jitterbug -- it was hilarious but so much fun! My friend still remembers this fondly too. </p> <p>I'm glad you had such a good day with your MIL. I know there will be more good times still, but it's tough to know that the difficult times are getting more frequent. You are wise to be in the moment and enjoy it to its fullest. It's particularly poignant for me because I'm facing the first anniversary of my mom's death in a few days and your description of how being around someone with dementia and Alzheimer's can be so bewildering, funny, sad, and heartwarming all at the same time rings so true. </p> <p>I particularly remember the afternoon when my mom thought I was her roommate when she first moved away from home and into the city. I was admonished to remember to unplug the hot plate and asked to keep my stuff on my side of the closet. Once that was settled, she poured me an (imaginary) cup of tea, admired my PJs, and settled in for a chat about living in the city and boyfriends. It was fascinating to hear her 20-year-old self--and so much fun to hear her wit and astute comments on what she was experiencing. As a mom, she was always quite careful about what she said and did, but that afternoon the barriers briefly were down and I learned so much more about her as an individual.
