Suz, thanks! I'm considering that climate aspect, too--I could indeed wear wool most of the time. I was intrigued by how light and carefree the quilted coat feels-- did you think it looks like it flares out too much? I actually do best in a not-completely straight coat but then hate to over-do the hippiness, as well.

The JC comes in this light gray--I like how it looks on, as well, but there is something about it--the stiffness or weight, plus zipping the wool up--that makes me feel like I will not like dealing with it. Didn't expect either, the fit or how I "feel" about it. So I think if I add more wool, I will try other fabrications.

If I lived in your climate I probably wouldn't even have a puffer! :)

But that comes from someone who really gets sick of them after a while. I wear my wool coats as long as I can.

I really like how that J. Crew coat looked on you and that surprised me. I expected the shape to be problematic since cocoons are generally narrower toward the bottom. But Angie said that this one has a more traditional tailored fit while still giving the cocoon appearance. I suspect you are right that the colour wouldn't be great, though.

I like the puffer on you, too. It might be a little on the loose side, but they aren't really meant to be worn super tight because to get warm, you need some air between you and the garment. (This is how layering works, too.) Of course, not too much air, or you feel all drafty.

Here are 2 others in darker colors, but both sold out online in small sizes!
I believe I do not want black or very dark charcoal (or navy) so the other options I'd consider are a range of grays and what is usually plummy colors (see, I'm all focused on color and not even function).

I don't know whether to focus on mid-weight down for the "real deal" or could try poly-fill quilted and see if I really need something much warmer. I'd get more use out of a not-too-warm coat, even though I'm feeling the vortex today at 20F.

I'm still conflicted!

This puts me in mind of Janet's red coat. The cut of this puffer leans toward fit & flare and most of my outfits I'd wear it with are "straight" such as pants and pencil skirts.
Could that be what is the problem, if any?

CF, this was the only one in the store--so no, no XS comparison.
I guess I could order from Nordstrom but the size S actually only just fits in the bust (go figure) when zipped, so if it's too big, it's a matter of being the wrong style/shape.
Una, oops, I'm becoming conflicted again....

LOVE IT! I had the same experience with finding an item at Burlington and then seeing it at Nordie's for more. Don't think Nordie's price matches with them though.

What a gorgeous coat. Between this and my new coat, I'm going to have to put Guess on my list....

CF, thanks for comments.
I'm not sure it's too long, since I wanted a coat for coverage and not a jacket. But in that case, perhaps it should be even longer.
But the too wide thing is why I asked about too "A-line" instead of being leaner.
The arms are kind of wide also. I don't have experience in puffer fit.
I'm glad I have not rushed to cut tags as even though I've got the Polar Vortex on my mind, I think I should compare some other puffers.
Style-wise I might be more comfortable with a darker color as well, more urban or something, not focusing on "winter happy" --I can get that with scarves, I think.

I don't relish the ordering/sending of this size item, though, so I wish I could see more in brick & mortar! We have Eddie Bauer, for example, but they tend to stock jackets and not longer parkas.

I love the way the J Crew looks - but it sounds like it won't work for you. I am less sure about the puffer. It might just be the angle - but it looks too big to me. Too wide, too long, the waist too low.

Sorry to be the voice of negativity! There are a lot of light puffers out there now, I think you could do better.

I had been considering adding to my coat capsule. My longest, kind of at-knee coat is a nice Dana Buchman black wool/cashmere blend in sort of a classic style and I still love it.
Had considered another longer coat in some kind of gray or cool camel color for this year, also thinking about cocoon style for trendiness and layering, but was not doing so well with that style as they kind of swallow me and tend to be reverse-pear shaped.

Anyway, I was also intrigued by the Polar Vortex/winter darkness discussions and thought, hmm, my winters don't compete, but wouldn't something light be fun. And is seemed easier to get light colors in the synthetic puffer material, plus washable. But, I don't look good in real white or cream colors.

Today I was passing by the Burlington Coat Factory store--had not had good luck there for some years, so this was just random. I thought I'd just do some try-ons and see what colors looked good; did not expect much.
Was just giving up when I saw this pale gray quilted Guess coat. I purchased it but have not done at-home try-ons.

I had no idea of whether this was a years-old style showing up at discount, but thought I'd try to find a photo out there in the ether to post.

Lo and behold, it's at Nordstrom (ha--my price was significantly less! ).
I think it looks just a bit more silvery gray IRL --the photo looks almost white, but it is quite light, but still has that grayed tone that I need instead of a warm cream. Ordinarily I'd think I'd go for more of a pewter color, but to me this seems more versatile since I would have pants and footwear in darker grays, also just more different, for fun. I didn't need a super-long coat but did want it to be well below hip.

I have no use for the fur hood--it's zip-off--but do like the stand-or-fold-down collar. The zip pockets are in a good place/angle. One ticky thing is there is a round black rubber Guess logo on the sleeve.

I think this could be a fun "Southern puffer" (meaning it doesn't have to be rated to zero degrees or below) .

On me a size S layers over a blazer and zips up, but I think still looks good open--also I think it looks a little longer--the model may be either tall or sized down. Will try to get a picture soon and of course I have to try it with the "truth-telling" mirrors.

What do you think?

ETA: Added pics with pants and skirt. It is very comfortable to wear--so light! No knit inner cuffs but that is okay for me. ? is it too A-line? Is it a shadow-style light color vs. my usual deeper neutrals--not as "luxurious" a color (if you can apply that to puffers) ? I am wondering if I will become a puffer convert over time and should this be a fun experiment.

Bonus JC coat--I like how the style looks but interestingly, despite the more cocoon shoulder the armholes are not roomy and it's hard to layer in this size, the 2--tried the 4 also. I love this color and use it in lesser items. but it is probably too "warm" for me for coat investment--and the material is a bit stiff.
