Hee hee - I got a 'Have a good day sir' from a teenaged boy at a Tim Hortons. He did manage to look properly mortified though, especially when I replied, 'You too ma'am.' I think he was hoping that I somehow didn't notice.

Was the waitress past 60 years old?

I go nuts at work when so many of my co-workers call all the boy dogs she and all the girl dogs he. Even if the girl is "Lucy" or the boy is "Mr Mutt". It's also dogs they have known for years.

I call it "Dy-Sex-ia" When the sex of a being is reversered. And not just the dogs, one time a worker said "my husband never wipes HER feet befor coming into the house". And yes, her husband is a man.

It seems to start at age 50 and get progressively worse. Recently I've noticed my neighbors are starting to do it too.

OK, I refuse to believe I walk and act like a man and that's why I got the porno fliers in Times Square. I think sometimes there's a kneejerk reaction from idiots and we shouldn't blame ourselves for them being somewhat slow and clueless, poor dears.

Besides, we can always do what my daughter does when someone assumes that - because her name is Mason - she's a boy: declare loudly, "'I'M NOT A BOY. I'M A GIRL!"

Elly is onto something. In India, around my very graceful and feminine girl cousins, especially those trained in classical dance, I feel like a guy because I have more typically American body language - wide gestures, awkward hand movements, stompy gait, boisterous laugh. Not to mention I'm a total klutz. My cousins are doctors and engineers and moms, all strong fierce women, but dang it, they are so much more elegant than me!

Patty, I always found it quite hilarious when this has happened to me. I have been a curvy hourglass since age 13 (D cup or better, big behind, big feminine lips) and it still was and is a frequent occurrence. It didn't help that I was as tall or taller than many of the men and boys in my community and often ended up wearing men's outerwear, ect because I couldn't find women's that was long enough to keep me warm. My brother's own friends used to mistake me for him and I have had co-workers of my fathers run me down. I think I finally figured out what it was that gave people the wrong impression though---- it was my mannerisms. When I was around people that I didn't know/was uncomfortable with I would unconsciously copy my father's mannerisms. I have his face, so mimicking his expressions wasn't hard and the body language was easy too.

Now wearing only women's clothing, with long hair down my back, and finally shorter than at least some men, when I get uncomfortable around people I wasn't expecting to meet or don't trust, I still get sir . . . .and frequently the other common connotation about masculine women.

Perhaps it isn't your body or face or clothing that is throwing people off . . . maybe it is your mannerisms?

Then another time when I was about 34, riding my bike with my 7 yr old son, on a windy and cold but sunny day (so we were both a bit bundled up). We run into two of his schoolmates. "Is that your brother?" they asked, pointing at me. He replied (with shock) "wha...? It's my mom!" The boys left briefly after that.

Una, what a great story! Wow, talk about a mix of generation gap and cultural gap.
Patty, I am very sorry that this happened. I am sure it's uncalled for.

When I was 18, I once came home with a semi-shaved punk red haircut. I was speaking with my younger brother in the living room when my parents opened the door, back from church. Immediately my mother burst in French to my brother: "I thought we had been clear NOT to invite any (male) friends ("Pas de copain")! Tell him to get out immediately".

My own mother!

When I had a very short haircut in NYC, and had to walk through Times Square on my way to lunch, I was routinely handed strip club fliers. I started collecting them.

On the flip side, when I was pregnant, and wearing wedding rings, I got called Miss every day. (Um... married... pregnant... not a Miss!)

I think sometimes people don't pay attention, or aren't very bright.

Patty, I've never shared this story with anyone, but I'll share it for you now. Back in my androgynous/college days, an old friend of my father's was visiting from India. My father introduced him to me, and we proceeded to have a very long weird conversation about school and sports that neither my father and I really understood, ending in him complimenting me on looking just like my father. Only later did I realize he'd spent the whole time thinking I was my 14 year old brother. Concert t-shirt? Check. Baggy shorts? Check. Skater punk haircut? Check. Cultural miscommunication gaping wide as the Grand Canyon? Oh, yeah.
