Brazilian Blowout and Japanese Thermal Reconditioning are two totally different things. Keratin treatmente are keratin treatments. Made from wool and animal hooves. ALL brands of "Brazilian Keratin" have some form of formyl, formaldehyde or aldehyde compound in them. Anywhere from 0.02% to the highest that Iv'e found, 37%. Companies are not required to disclose aldehyde compounds. This is why they lie and say "formaldehyde free". However, Without this necessary ingredient your service wouldn't last longer than 4-6 weeks, if your lucky. The service itself is not dangerous to clients. The danger is to the stylist that is performing several services a day. As a consumer I wouldn't put to much stock in the fromaldehyde issue. I am only getting it done twice a year. I have done extensive research about this and have decided for myself.

I got a Brazilian Blowout 3 months ago for the first time - and it literally cut back on my grooming time in the morning by 20 to 30 minutes. I have wavy hair (with a little bit of frizz at my temples) and always had to spend a great deal of time wrestling with my hair to get the waves out - not to mention the frizz. Then (living in a beach community) the moisture would pretty much take it back to frizz and waves within a couple of hours - especially if I went anywhere near the ocean - so frustrating! After the B.B. I could spend alllll day at the beach and my hair was straight, soft and silky at the end of the day. I cannot recommend the B.B. more! In fact, I have an appointment with my hairstylist on Thursday to get it again! My hair has never looked better - it is shiny and swingy and sooooo soft to the touch! I absolutely LOVE it. Also, MK - I color and highlight my hair - no problem - just update your color beFORE the B.B. and your set to go. The B.B. lightened up my color just a bit - but a small price to pay for the phenomenal results! With the B.B. I no longer have to blow-dry my hair (unless I'm in a hurry) and I don't have to use a flat-iron. How cool is that?????

I got a Brazilian blowout thinking that I was getting Japanese straightening, and wasn't very happy with the results. I paid a whole lot compared to what they usually cost, thinking I was getting an amazing deal, since even an expensive Brazilian blowout is about half the price of a decent Japanese straigtening. Long story short, it did not last. After about a month, my hair went completely back to normal. I'm crossing my fingers for you. Right now it looks awesome

LeahJames: I have almost straight hair. I only got it to have a smooth blowout look.

I don't like blowdrying my hair. Since I got it done, I wash and air-dry my hair and it looks like I straight ironed it. It also has more shine to it.

My hairdresser told me Brazilian Blowouts only work for people with really wavy hair - is this true? I don't want to straighten my hair (it can't get that much straighter), only smooth it like a regular blow out would. Do you think a Brazilian Blowout would do that or is my hairdresser right?

Thanks everyone. Apologies for being late to respond. I couldn't write back on this due to a deadline.

Stephanie: I'll definitely keep updating how it holds up.

Lynne, MaryK, Rute: I don't think color is a problem. There was someone right next to me getting it done with highlights.

Joy: It was invented couple of years ago. It promises straight healthy-looking hair for up to 12 weeks. It is keratin-based like some other straighteners.

Isabel: Thank you! I'm relieved!

I think a little bit formaldahyde is fine if you're a consumer since it is in moderation. It is really bad for the people working with it resulting in long-term health defects.

I check with several Salons and they are not doing the Braizilian Blowout because of the high amount of formaldehyde. They suggested to get the Keratin Treatment and I love it. It took about 2 hours and so far has lasted 2 months. I have low lights and highlights in my hair so far so good. It is very smooth and does not frizz and it only takes about 5 minutes to dry and style my hair. My stylist told me it should last about 4 months. Good luck with yours keep us posted.

I had a brazilian blowout on my hair which is highlighted several months ago and it was fine My hair was in much better condition after the treatment. I got a no-formaldehyde version also (which is apparently less effective but seemed to work fine for my wavy hair)

I would do it again if I still had longer hair (had it cut off a la Audrey Tatou a couple of weeks ago).

Mary and Rute, I can't speak to the Brazilian blowout, but you can do thermal reconditioning on colored hair. My hair is most definitely colored and I've had a TR done yearly for the last 7 years. I do think it's riskier on highlighted hair and heavily lightened hair isn't a candidate.

The chemicals used in a TR are the same as in most standard relaxers (ammonium thioglycolate). The difference is in the flat ironing. It does make hair *very* straight though. A Brazilian blowout won't be quite as straight but also doesn't last as long. TR is very nearly permanent.

I have no idea what a "brazilian cut " is, but boy does your hair look good ! Fortunately, with a strong eco-movement, people are finding alternatives to harsh chemicals. Formaldehyde was in the news quite a bit a couple of years ago and I believe that CA banned it in personal care products....so if you went to a reputable place and not someone's cellar, LOP, chances are it is formaldehyde-free.

ENJOY !

Kim: That's the part I was debating for a while. I don't know what to believe. The only reason I decided was the claim that it was chemical free. (The Japanese one chemical.) It indeed irritated my eyes a little during the process which tells me it is not completely chemical-free, but 11% is huge. I'll keep reading about it.

I finally gave in and got one with my new bob crop. Thinking to myself "Why haven't I done this before?"! It is my birthday gift to myself.

I don't know how long it will last, but my hair feels buttery soft and didn't have to do a single thing after washing it. It looks perfectly groomed even when air dried.

I'll report back in a few weeks on the status.
