I may not have a Goodwill near me but this makes sense - as a teen, I would sometimes travel to the wealthier neighbourhoods if searching for specific items (like coats) because I knew their charity shops would have higher quality/ better versions of them.

Interesting and yes, unsurprising, development. I have had more luck at consignment than at thrift for a long time but it seems to be entirely dependent on local options (unless you are shopping online).

Interesting. I confess, all my recent trips to Goodwill have been donations, and I haven’t popped in to see what’s in the store in years. I sort of gave up on thrift shopping because I found so little that suits my style, in my size. This area has a good possibility of some high-end pieces, but they skew more St John and less my style, IYKWIM. But maybe I should take a look more often.

Not surprised at all. If you think about it, certain people with a lot of disposable income do not necessarily care about the relatively small amount of money they can get reselling and actually prefer the idea of giving their things to charity. Thus, and my experience has shown, Goodwill/charity shops get just as good if not better stuff than for-profit resale operations. Prices will go up, no doubt about that, but not necessarily as high as they are at consignment places.

This is so interesting. I always saw that as a possibility for Goodwill because they do get some great stuff. In fact, one of our local Goodwill stores is known as the “Gucci Goodwill” because it’s adjacent to a wealthy neighborhood and gets upscale donations. And they have one near my house that has weekly in-store auctions of luxury goods. Since Goodwill items are donated, perhaps that will mean lower prices (one would hope).

I’m not surprised. We have one of their upscale curated shops near is, and the quality of merchandise is much higher. I often consider reselling- but I don’t want to get into that. I do find good things for myself.

Interesting. I follow a local personality who finds remarkable finds at Goodwill and wears it herself (on camera) or resells.

Goodwill is entering the luxury resale market in direct competition with The Real Real and Poshmark. I was unaware that Poshmark was recently acquired by Naver for 1. 2 billion(!) dollars. I am not surprised the resale market is significantly outpacing the retail market and is predicted to do so through at least the end of the decade.
