You look so pretty in #1. The pattern makes all the difference and although the green is a great color on you, it was a very wise decision to purge #2.

You make me laugh!!! I totally do what you do!!

The first wrap dress is sensational on you - maybe its the combo of the colour, print, and fit.

I rationalize things exactly the same way, I mean, I JUST got it this year, so it MUST sit in my closet for at least 2 years before I even consider purging it! And I MIGHT wear it to a fancy thingy coming up...blah blah blah.

Good for you for purging!! Wear that first dress to death - it's awesome!

Great list! The fit and drape plus the print ARE better. I think the " # 1, or # 2?" Test is a great way to focus wardrobe style.

Thanks Aubergine. I found your comment helpful for my own future searches too. I often 'dissect' my clothes to the tiniest pieces I can identify and it helps me to know what others notice too, so I can be fully aware of why I shouldn't settle for second best - and what it is that makes or breaks the item. Although it may seem at first that there is so much to pay attention to, and "is there another dress that fits the bill in everything", I think it's a search that pays of brilliantly.

Both dresses are lovely but #1 is definitely more flattering. I think it comes down to the fabric, print and tone. In #1 i found I focussed on "you" rather thank in #2 where all I could see initially was the green of the dress.

Aubergine, you look completely amazing in dress #1!!! You definitely have to wear this more often! Sometimes you can do a gentle handwash on 'dry clean only' items if the dry cleaning aspect is an issue.
I'm sorry #2 didn't work out for you. In theory it should work and as you say it is such a pretty colour!
The 'comparison test' is a good one! Photographs are a big reality check for me. I held on to an old, comfy tramping/camping jacket for far too long-I saw how tired (stretched, singed, stained) it looked in a photo and retired it immediately!

Thanks, everyone! And I'm glad I'm not alone on being slow to toss unless it's incredibly obvious

Beth Ann, that's a really excellent point about the clothes being there to make us look good, not the other way around. And about prints keeping the eye moving more.

Ornella, I think a lot of the comments here hit on some of the big things I noticed comparing the two. The longer sleeves instead of the silly puffy cap sleeves are a big plus for dress #1, along with the pattern to keep the eye moving. Also, I think it has a more defined a-line in the skirt and possibly a slightly higher waist, so it fits my shape better. And the thin, silky fabric in #1 drapes really nicely, while #2 is a more matte jersey fabric that's a little thick to drape gracefully, yet also doesn't quite have the structure of something like ponte. The main things I liked about the second dress are the color and, like Donna said, that it's machine washable. Which aren't really enough, are they?

Suz, the green dress is actually gone already, so this is good to hear! Normally, anything I decide to toss sits in the spare bedroom for a while so I can reassess if I really want to, but, in a giant fit of motivation, we decided to take a bunch of stuff to Goodwill today. And I guess I could've taken it out of the pile to give myself more time to decide, but I was kind of over it already. Although I do appreciate Jennifer and Jules's suggestions on salvaging it.

Donna, I usually do try to limit myself to things are machine washable or can handle Dryel unless it's something like a coat. (I hate hand-washing even more than dry-clean only.) But, every so often, I feel like that's limiting things too much and keep something that needs to go to the dry cleaners if it's really calling to me. Dry cleaning isn't even that much of a pain because there's somewhere near me that does pick-ups, but it just feels wasteful somehow. Like I already spent money to buy something, then I have to keep paying to wear it too. But, since it's really only a few things in my wardrobe, it probably isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things. And it's certainly better than buying something perfect and having it sit there!

The first dress looks wonderful on you, but I know what you mean about *saving* DCO stuff. No doubt you can throw the LE dress in the wash which I'll bet is one reason you've held onto it. My solution is to limit my purchases only to fab stuff that is ALSO machine/hand washable so that I will actually wear them; otherwise they will just sit in my closet unless they are skirts.

The first dress is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous on you! So, so flattering, feminine, yet strong -- and cohesive. I love it.

You are right to get rid of the second dress. I hate to disagree with those who are offering ideas about how to salvage it. It just does not measure up -- and there's no need for something less fab than dress #1 in your wardrobe or your life.

It can be tough to teach ourselves this lesson but it is incredibly freeing -- and now that you've worn dress 1, your standards will be that much higher for whatever else you allow into your closet.

I totally get this. Having something great fresh in your mind (especially when it is *that* great) really gives that final push to sort out good from bad.

The first dress is beautiful. The second one is pretty, but yeah - perhaps it stood some chance if it was shown on its own, but it's just not fair to it to show it next to the other one

Btw, any chance to break down a bit more how the two compare and which aspects of each one were winners/losers?

I also like the sleeves of the first one. To me they look more modern, sleek, and sophisticated.

I really like the pattern of the first dress. It looks great with your hair and skin tone. I tend to hang onto things too long too.

Yey, Aubergine! In a wrap dress, fabric and fit are what it's about. I love a print wrap dress, because it takes so little accessorizing and it is more forgiving, with the print keeping the eye moving. Sometimes we forget that we give up some of our resources (money, time, and closet space) to an item. We aren't there to make the clothing look good -- it's supposed to flatter us! Any item that doesn't pull it's weight and earn it's place needs to find a new home.

..........gotta go evict a few slackers myself.............
