My favorite trends past and present:

DYOT goes to number 1. I’m happy to embrace this and ignore trends that are not in keeping with my personal sense of style.

Mid/High Rises- I’m built with a high rise so anything less is ridiculous on me….

Long blazers—-love them, and every time these are trending I add another one, two or maybe three, to my collection.

Slip dresses- I love a nice slip dress.

Midi, midaxi, maxi skirts/dresses- I hate skirts that fall above my knees because they make it impossible to remain properly covered when I sit. ie. No panty flash! :-)

Sneakers, I have been wearing nice sneakers almost exclusively for the past year.

Booties- They are less prone to zipper snags on tights and nice socks, or rubbing on my bony ankle and they are easier than tall boots to fit my slender calves.

Knits of every sort…dresses, cardigans, pullovers

Such a great thread and good exercise, Carla! Makes me think about trends vs. my classics.

Trends--or what I was willing to try as new-to-me:
Yes, sneakers with everything!
ankle pants for practicality
low heels/flats
pleated/fluid/relaxed leg pants (fits waist w/room for hips)
silk/bias cut slip dresses w/toppers

My Classics (maybe today's trends that I was wearing anyway?)
waistlines
belts
high rise skirts/pants/shorts
summer waistcoats
high/low mixing
strong shoulders
cropped tops/sweaters/jackets/blazers
long fluid blazers/duster cardigans
1970s boho/big sleeves/mixed prints/jewelry
midis/midaxis
column of color
analogous color mixing

I've had such a great run of late (years now?) with my classics being on-trend after a dearth of such items; I'm really afraid of too many changes!

Sheepishly looking forward to the trend report!

I kinda wish the high rise trend would ease up. Many pants and jeans are still too high for me to wear.

I’m enjoying some trends for as long as they last, and some of them I was wearing before they were trending.

- Midi/mid-axi skirts and dresses (but can the ruffles and tiers stop dominating the market)
- Tall boots
- Full length pants
- Wide(ish) leg pants (not too extreme)
- Lower heels
- Stompy lug-soled boots
- a little bit of 70s glam and 80s grunge

I am looking forward to Angie's trend report!

I am happy to see that high-rises and wide-legged denim are still trending. And earth tones are going strong. Especially brown!

I see more fitted, long blazers available. That look appeals to me. I don't know if I will add a blazer to my wardrobe this year, but I have been looking for a while.

I don’t follow trends, but they sure do affect availability. I’ve always worn long mid-calf skirts. I’ve worn all lengths but no longer wear short, but until recently, midis were hard to find even on my short self. I’ve always leaned “cottage core” but am trying to break the floral habit (addiction, tbh). They looked better on my younger self. Always had knee high boots-but when I lugged them to the tropics & wore them on cooler days, they got really weird reactions. These were flat black riding style, yet I might as well have had over the knee stilettos. It was a mild deterrent as I didn’t want to project that at work! So I’m glad they’re “back.” I also realized how much I dislike tight man made materials on my legs. With some digging, I’ve been able to find *all cotton* jeans & pants with low rise. I don’t know why I bother since I go years without wearing jeans, but oh well.
So long skirts, boots & looser cotton silhouettes mean I’m briefly stylish, lol.

I've been reveling in the return of my late-teens late-90s fashion. Ribbed tank tops, slightly baggy jeans, tailored vests, bulky cotton sweaters, Dr Martens, Converse. I feel very at-home in these styles even though the 2010s skinny black jeans and angular leather jackets flatter me more and are more "me" deep down. My favorite outfits for important days still come from the 2010s corner of my wardrobe.

Every time ballet flats come around again, I get excited, forget my past lessons, buy a pair, then can't wear them (they just don't stay on my boxy, short-toed feet). More shoes resold than I can count. But the higher vamp on the current styles might work for me. I have a new-in-box pair from Everlane and I'm debating if I should wear them or sell them preemptively.

I've been scouring secondhand stores for a 90s leather blazer, cut like a longline boyfriend blazer, not fitted. Likely candidates are vintage Banana Republic and Gap. The funny thing is that I remember my size at those stores back then, and it's still my numeric size at those stores... but definitely not the same dimensions as 25 years ago!

I like trend reports too Carla but not any that say something is “dated”. I have decided not to get grumpy about the latter though, since I feel emotionally strong enough to mostly wear what I like anyway. But like Jaime, although my archive is way smaller than hers, I can have fun pulling something old out if it is really trending at present. This would more be decades old sentimental stuff.
I love it especially if some of my favourite colours trend, as I might get the chance to update an old favourite or add to my collection of that colour. Cobalt blue is a case in point as my items in or with that colour range from 1995 through 2013, 2018 to this year.
Really happy with red and metallics trending as I have quite a bit. I have some lime green too that might get another round.
I love the new shorter pants length and the cropped pants for 2 reasons:
1. Cropped on taller women may be full length on me and I love not having to hem.
2. I really want to show off my shoes!
I still get compliments at work on my shoes most work days

Oversized fits, more rugged boot styles (e.g., flat chunky boots, Western boots, moto boots), and longer lengths on skirts and coats are all trends that work so well for my style. It has been delightful to be able to find sweaters with sleeves that are actually long enough! Love the availability of second-hand shopping online too--that has been huge for me.

I just bought the most comfortable fluid long trousers. I feel like I'm wearing pj's, but I look much more elevated. That along with a flowy top and I'm super happy and I feel very polished!

I also am going for the "running shoes at any time" trend. As someone with out of the box sized feet, I can get running shoes, so as long as I'm not wearing a dress - runners it is!

A couple of oddball trends:

Wide straps on crossbody bags. Guitar strap styles in particular! The narrow straps always bothered my shoulder, and now the soft, wide straps are everywhere. And most bags have D-rings, so you can easily swap out the strap. Yay!

Wirefree bras. In my generous size, they used to be limited to thick, beige, smothering contraptions, but with the rise of multiple brands online, I have lots of choices.

A lot, in recent years.

In the early 2010s I felt rather out of step with dominant trends, which sort of forced me to see and realize my personal style for the first time. I knew what it was because it wasn’t readily available!

In the 2020s, trends have been a lot more aligned with my style and it’s been much easier, for better or worse, to shop retail. A few big ones, off the top of my head:

Utilitarian footwear
Fanny packs/belt bags (esp worn bandolier style)
Outdoor gear/“granola girl” style
Looser/relaxed/slouchy fits
Chunky knitwear
Cropped/boxy tees and tops
Earth tones
Rigid 100% cotton denim
Linen!!
90s inspired — a lot of the above fall into this category

I like a lot at the moment. I like and have adopted these trends, to varying degrees:

*metallics trend
*mermaid trend
*90s trends: especially combat boots, vests, cropped jumpers
*long (midaxi or maxi) skirts, especially for Summer as I can get away with not putting sunblock on my legs
*knit trends, especially crochet, sheer knits and mesh
*full length, slouchy and wide leg jeans and pants, including cargo pants
*high rises
*chunky flat footwear, including platforms
*long (maxi) coats and jackets
*earthy colours
*red
*shorter (cropped) tops and jackets
*extended shoulders/boxy top silhouettes
*tech bags
*oversized tops and jackets
*cutaway, high neck tops
*juxtaposition
*high/low mixing
*thrifting/buying second hand (I think it’s fair to call this a growing trend, and it’s definitely a good trend)
*DYOT, the best trend of them all

Midi and maxi skirts! Sooo much more practical for my active life/job, and wearable with flat sandals.

Birks with everything. Birks are my sneakers I haven't entirely given up on heels, but since 2020, they've had much less of a role in my wardrobe.

Wider pants and higher rises. Wide leg pants seem much more elegant than skinnies to me. Need the higher rise to fully cover my backside!

Wool coats. They make me feel so much more polished in winter than puffers.

Minimalism/classics/neutrals. I'm really embracing quieter dressing these days since I've been Swedish Death Cleaning. I really don't foresee myself going back to bright, magpie dressing for most occasions anymore.

The trends that I’ve enjoyed adopting include:

Denim on denim. Glad its no longer considered a faux pas. It provides me numerous ways to combine my various jeans with denim shirts and denim jackets.

Looser Jean Silhouette: Yay! Freedom from the confines of the slim/ skinnies. I’m not wild about the wide legs, too much fabric and not practical for winter, but I really enjoy the fit of the looser/ slightly baggy straight legs

MIdi-Length Dresses and Skirts: It seemed to take forever for this to cycle back in style, but I’m milking it even though I don’t wear dresses or skirts all that often.

Oh, I am all over this. Like you and Jaime, I enjoy a good trend report, partly to help me see how I can wear what I already have in new ways!

I find at least a few trends to adopt/ celebrate each season. Recent adoptions include:

Metallic clothing/ accessories. I've been incorporating silver bits since 2016 when my hair went silver but this is a great year to add to my cache.

Wide leg full length jeans and pants. I love them. I also need other styles for wet weather, but the newer lengths mean my hems won't be a disaster even with full length versions as long as they are not ground-sweeping.

Short, boxy, strong shouldered jackets. They work well wth dresses/ skirts and with the aforementioned full length pants.

Pantsuits and casualized suiting.

There are a few trends I intend to embrace this season as well, including long wool coats (finally got one) and (I hope) red.

What Jaime said.I love the return of browns and hope to add some warm light ones. I also like the new pant lengths. The cropped ones are my shorts now and the new full length will mean less falls due to tripping. That's very good news for somone in their 70's with brittle bones.

I like puffers because they are warm but light weight. I plan to get a new long one in a color this year...coral if I can find it. I sat out the cold shoulder trend but that may have been a mistake. They cover most wrinkled parts of the arms. I also sat out the leggings trend. I saw too many awful examples of leggings worn as pants.

Everything that is cropped, tops and bottoms. As a petite woman, I used pay to shorten every pair of pants and often for tops, too. So many sweaters were rejected for being too long. I don’t wear anything too cropped but like the availability of petite-friendly garments.

Wide leg jeans in mid rise ( or low rise if I'm lucky ) - worn a bit lower with a bit of slouch. I've got slightly cropped ones that I enjoy wearing now - looks intentional with a bit of the ankle and the shoe on the display .
Slightly oversized relaxed look overall - less about perfect fit or proportions, more about comfort and individuality.
Sneakers with everything and everywhere ( problematic feet as well ).

I love trend reports! Admittedly I am usually looking to see which trends I can pull from my archives (spoiler - most of them), but they also help set the mood for what I will focus on in the upcoming months. That said, I do not adopt most of them (I am still not a sneaker person), and continue to wear my essentials whether they are trendy or not (examples include boyfriend jeans, long shorts, flat shoes, brights). On the other hand, I see red is trendy so it is fun to pull out my red bags. I see snakeskin is trendy so it is fun to pull out my snakeskin boots. And so on .

Sneakers, definitely, especially Converse. Birkenstocks. I rarely wear anything else on my feet.

Over the last few years, scarves (though I’ve mostly abandoned them the last two winters) and relaxed toppers like cardigans and fleece or puffer vests have played a big part in my casual wardrobe. I don’t know if those qualified as trends at any time?

More recently, denim trends have been most important to me. I’ve replaced ALL my skinny jeans with wide legs, more relaxed and rolled cuff styles, and a couple of novelty pair - barrel legs and ones with a lighter denim insert/stripe down the side.

…or maybe this should be trends that worked for you?

I love a good trend report. I don’t feel compelled to jump on every (micro) trend, sometimes get my hackles up when styles (I like) are determined passé, love when something old is new again, and sometimes find something ‘new’ that looks good or interesting to my eye and will add currency to my style. I try to keep an open mind when reading trend reports, as well as my sense of humour - and generally consider trend reports in a positive light.

A few trends have actually solved styling problems for me, though some took a while to ‘take’. Tends I’ve appreciated the most:

- ankle pants/cropped length/the new (shorter) full length. Having struggled my entire life with the lack of sufficiently long inseams, the normalization of what used to be ‘flood’ pants has been a blessing. As long as the silouhette is modern or classic, the shorter inseam seems intentional, rather than a fashion faux pas. Works for me!

- sneakers with everything! I was an early adopter since this trend solved fussy feet footwear issues. I did get the side-eye from DH, but plenty of validation out irl. Another win!

- though a late adopter of puffers (2016?) I’m a fan. I suppose they’ve become so common, that they aren’t a trend anymore - although colour and silhouettes change with some being more current than others.

- there does seem to be a return of the long cloth (maxi?) coat. I’m on board for wool warmth, coverage, and a little sophistication. Maybe it’s an old classic coming ‘round again.

- bias cut slip dresses/skirts. Weren’t they big in the 90’s? Now they’re back. I didn’t have one in my 30’s, but I’m finding the one I have easy to wear in my 60’s! LOL!

- fluid wide legged trousers. These are tricky to fit, but I do like having at least one pair in my closet as a pants option. When the fit is right, they can elevate a look and be comfortable to wear.

What about you? Have any trends had particular resonance for you? Have you adopted any into your style repertoire? Made them part of your signature?
