Maya, I'm sorry to hear that the design job interview was so weird, but I wish you LOTS of luck for the Anthropologie interview. What day will it be?
Also, that is awesome that you found such comfortable and cute shoes for $25. Yay for shoes that don't kill your feet!

Given the current jobs market and the competitive nature of your industry many people will take an indirect path to reach their dream job. Anthro may provide you with job security while you continue your search. Anthro may also provide more inspiration for your portfolio and I wouldn't be afraid to ask if you can submit pieces to the design team for appraisal.

p.s. they are perfectly adorable shoes. I love them.

Aw, Maya sweetie, so sorry to hear about the bummer of a job interview. Sounds like a lot of negative/weird vibes at that place; I think it would be stressful working there. I wish you the best of luck with Anthro! I can totally see you designing for them

Angie, I was wearing the FL pumps. They are just too big for me I'm afraid. I tried my best to pad them up since I can't exchange for a 36, but no dice. Laura is kind (and lucky!) enough to take them off my hands. It breaks my heart to see them go, but my broken feet hurt more!

The flats are great because they actually look nearly identical to these:

http://www.lorisshoes.com/prod.....#038;eng=2

They are black with gold dome-shaped studs. I wish I could tell you the brand name but I'm having trouble reading it. They should hire me to redo their logo...

Anyway, for $25 I was pretty impressed. They are buttery soft. Will post pics ASAP. They are going to look GREAT with skinnies and straight legs. I'm excited.

As for the job, I feel more and more reluctant about it. Anthropologie, here I come.

Oh, that’s a shame, Maya. How odd. I’m sorry it wasn’t moonlight and roses. But as Tanya says, let’s wait for the outcome. How did the interview end?

I’m glad your brother was there to cheer you up! That’s killer. And what were you wearing on your feet that caused you so much pain?

Let's see the new shoes!

The website says nothing about the name. That's one thing I left out: The interviewer seemed annoyed when I asked her about it, as if I was supposed to know. She implied that she told me, but there is just no way. I wrote everything down as she said it on the phone.

I doubt the offer will be enough to make me take it. I hate going into jobs with reluctance or out of desperation. They are not going to pay a lot--certainly not enough for me to move out--and it's freelance so no health insurance (something I'm really concerned about).

It really bothered me that they didn't seem to have any curiosity at all about me. It's so important to know how a designer works, what their goals are, where they're coming from, how they communicate, etc.

So basically, I am going to Anthropologie on Tuesday and I think I would rather take that. Who knows, maybe it will lead to a job designing for Anthro. Can anyone say dream come true? :p

An interview is a two way process and it sounds like they are not the company for you! Of course a job offer may make you reconsider. Can you find anything about the company on the Internet because the change of name without notification does seem a little odd.

On the plus side Maya found some shoes......woohoo.

I'm not sure Marianna. There is a lot to consider. What surprised me is that I didn't meet any other graphic designers, or anyone really except the guys in the room and the scary woman who interviewed me. Meeting the people I would be working under could really make or break the deal. Obviously the place makes me uncomfortable, but there is no denying that I am desperate. I guess it's ultimately going to come down to the offer.

OK so first I have to tell all of you how perfectly lovely and supportive you are all and how much I appreciate it. I'm truly touched and feel very lucky to be a part of this community. If only the whole world were like YLF :)

Anyway, the interview was a bit bizarre. It wasn't really an interview. She did not ask me any questions at all. She rushed me through showing her my work, and she did like a few pieces, but overall she was a bit unpleasant. She used a lot of erm, threatening language...like "we'll kill you" if we don't like what you're doing.

There were 3 men in the room who were working on something unrelated and had nothing to do with my interview. One of them, in his 40's or thereabouts, tried to flirt with me a bit while my interviewer stepped out. It was majorly awkward.

On top of that it was 9/11 in NYC and pouring rain, and my feet hurt. On top of THAT, the company changed the name without informing me, so when I got to the right place, I was very confused, went downstairs to verify that I was in the right place, and went back up, which made me a little late. less than 5 minutes, but still, this woman was pretty strict so I'm sure she noticed.

But...my big bro made me feel a lot better. The tea and dumplings were delicious, and I'm very pleased with my cheapo shoes. Will take pictures later. It sucks that the interview was so bad, but I'm trying to stay positive that at least someone saw potential in me and my work, even if they're not really a match.

The interview was disappointing. More about that later when I'm not iPhone- typing. To cheer me up, my brother treated me to tea and dumplings. When he saw me limping down the street, he told me he would get me new shoes as soon as we found a place because he couldn't stand watching me hobbling around. We stopped in Laila Rowe and I found some cute ruffley studded flats for $25. Instant relief. Later on the guy at the tea place saw my tea cookbook (that I designed) while my brother was looking through my portfolio and said it was beautiful. So I feel a lot better but I was a mess after the interview.

Thank you R&J! All of your kind words have warmed the cockles of my heart. Unfortunately I'm not off to a great start. It's cold outside but hot indoors most places, so I went with the pumps. Big mistake. If anyone wants to buy these fly London pumps (Sz 37) from me, let me know. I can't return them now. I even brought my arsenal of shoe doctoring products (3 different kinds of insoles, heel grips, friction block, foot liners, ball of foot cushions, and band aids) and my feet are STILL miserable after just 3 hours! I feel totally hopeless regarding shoes :(. I need a head start getting there since I have to walk very slowly and I'll probably have to cancel my plans for later. All because of my SHOES. Trying to stay positive and just focus on the interview rather than my sad feet.
