<Gasping in horror> Unbelievable!! He owes you the price of the boots, no question. The only thing I experienced that even comes close to this is once, I took a few jackets to a tailor to have the sleeves let out. They were extremely poorly done. The head tailor/owner apologized to me, told me someone new they were training had done the work, and offered to either reimburse me or re-do them.

Ah maannnn.... that sucks.
Are you a long time customer? I would simply request a reimbursement on both the price of the boots and the repair costs. If they want your business, they'll do good by you.

Wow.

Epic fail.

I am weeping for you, April. Good grief, if they can't fit your calves they must be like 10 inches. Excuse me--one must be 10 inches and one must be 11 since they're not even the same size!

I hope he can make it right. If not, I think he should refund you for the cost of taking them in, refund you for stretching them (if he had the nerve to charge you in the first place), AND pay for the ruined boots.

That's awful! I'm just about to take my boots in for altering...eek!

Leather's pretty pliable so they probably can be stretched, but he's going to need to be very careful about stretching them differently so they're equal. I assume he won't be charging you for a dime of it and paying for the boots themselves if he can't make it right! Don't forget to photograph the difference in case you need some proof.

If you don't mind saying, can you tell me how much you paid for the alteration? I'm just curious for the pair I'm going to take in. Thanks!

I do understand the boot aggravation and I'm so frustrated with my own search I could cry. I remember how excited you were to find those Ariats and to have this happen is just, well...there are no words.

I really appreciate all your support, ladies! This is the only crowd I trust to understand the disappointment of a major alteration gone wrong.

Megan, the first time I called, the cobbler said the leather stripping he needed to create a new seam was on backorder. After more time had gone by, he got deeply sheepish and apologetic and shaved a percentage off the price I had expected to pay. I think he has a bustling business comprised mainly of quick and easy jobs, and he just procrastinated on the bigger project.

And yes, I am enjoying the Melissa boots, but my other tailored boots are a black lace-up style, so I really wanted a plain riding boot for jeans or skirts.

April, that's AWFUL...how did the cobbler justify how long it's taken for him to do it?

The cynical part of me says that he has slacked off about doing it then rushed through the job when he realised that you weren't going to be patient anymore.

You had success with the Frye Melissa's in brown yes? Would you consider getting another pair in black since boots are such a difficult purchase for you?

So, remember in the summer when I found a pair of classic black riding boots that were on sale enough to allow me both to purchase them and to pay for a calf alteration? They're not available anymore, but they were these in solid black.

I took them to the cobbler in August. Weeks went by. Months. I finally shamed him into finishing them, and I picked them up this week. AAAAAGH. The left one can be zipped up only with heroic effort (if my calf holds its breath) and the right one is full inch smaller than the left and can't be zipped under any circumstances.

I took them back yesterday and he said he would "stretch them." Hmm. Can a boot shaft be stretched that much? I hardly dare to hope.

Will not become hysterical. Will not...
