Rachylou, good to see ya! I thought the socks would just be a looks thing, but walking around was surprised that they actually did keep me warm. Not a deep winter thing for sure, but then neither are the tights. Did you see Sunflower’s version of the necklace thingy? The keeper of that shop is from India. I had a cup of tea with him while he waxed philosophical on a range of topics. It’s the kind of thing that happens to me. I didn’t see those necklaces in there, but he sure did have everything else. There is a concho belt I want on Etsy; I might just ask him if he has one like it.

ETA Sally, I just remembered that the apple pix aren’t by a timer either. There was another woman there picking apples, so I asked her to do it. She did, but clearly didn’t see why anyone would want pictures of themselves picking apples. That’s the only time it’s ever been awkward.

Quirky! I agree with Angie. My fave is probably the knee pants and knee socks look... altho I don't know how warm that really is for fall? Maybe tights are better?

I've never seen necklaces like that. Is that a Tibetan or Nepalese shop?

Thanks, ST! The gold curls on the shirt are from Gustav Klimt’s Tree of Life (& he did similar in many other works, like The Kiss)

Zaoebi, ohh, I like the idea of trying light-colored bottoms with that jacket! On its last run, I ended up wearing it with the black baby bootcuts. It works, but just always felt too safe to be fun, iykwim.

Looking forward to your new boots—fingers crossed that they fit properly!

People here have been wearing puffers and parkas for weeks. I just can’t—it’s too early.

These outfit photos are great - so full of energy! They make me miss Autumn, actually - it's also my favourite season of the year. Well, when you get a 'real' Autumn, that is - I want to see the leaves changing colour etc, not the 'slightly colder than usual' humdrum that we get here! (It's also 18°C here today, yet I'm already seeing people in arctic puffer jackets which are much thicker than yours lol).

I like the skort & the floral shorts worn with matching burgundy tights! I bought some dark brown tights in the sales last year, so have been patiently stalking dark brown boots to wear them with (the Blondo combat boots are on their way to me already!) for a similar column of colour.

I'm surprised that I don't hate the long shorts with the long socks as much as I thought I would (guess it's a similar silhouette to a pencil skirt with kneehigh boots, but just more practical) lol. But for me (personally) I think I would prefer to see that royal blue with a 'punchier' coloured bottom - maybe long white shorts instead? Just a hunch, though - we all know that I know nothing about how to wear shorts well, lol

Thanks, everyone, for playing in the leaves with me & my crazy photos. The double plaid/knee socks outfit was not so divisive after all—good! I’m not sure if I’ll repeat it though. I might split it up, wearing the jackets together with different bottoms, as Katerina suggests. I’m also wondering if the socks might work well with the khaki green shorts. Given the weather forecast, I don’t think I’ll be finding that out any time soon. Brrrr

Bijou, tights made the shorts/skort feel much dressier than I expected, in a fun way. You might enjoy it too, when things cool down again in your hemisphere. We are indeed enjoying the leaves

Tanya, fall might be my son’s favorite season these days. It still feels new to him. I’m glad to have it again too.

Kkards, exactly! This is the kind of weather I was trying to figure out before my trip (& then it was warmer anyway). I think you’re right about low-contrast footwear with the socks. Credit for the cranberry tights with these shorts goes to Angie, who suggested them last year over the black tights I had on (although with the Klimt shirt, I might try the black again another time—last year’s outfit was a burgundy red sweater)

Katerina, your comments on my photos make me smile. Thanks for the suggestion on the combo of those socks and those shorts. That outfit might just be a touch too dressy for jeans shorts. It’s taken a quarter of a century for me to get around to the suede jacket, but I enjoy it in transitional weather here.

Katerina and Nikki, cool that you have the necklace clasps too—good idea to use it for double strands. Nikki, those strands have great rich fall colors.

Kate, why not have fun, right?

Irina! Yours might be my favorite comment on here, just because it’s so unexpected. How fun that you like the quirky look.

Angie, I guess a 90s bug bit me, so I’m attracted to the necklaces along with other 90s stuff. Thanks for your encouragement on these looks. I’m so glad I got the raincoat! It is just the twist on a classic that I like.

Nikki, that might be my fave too. Thanks for commenting. Your posts and comments always make me smile.

Brooklyn, after all the head-scratching and reaching, I was surprised that skort outfit came together like it did. The skort is polyester crepe. I wasn’t sure if the Klimt shirts were identical or simply in the same series. Thanks for thinking through the last pair of shorts & tights with me.

Sally, I hope your lockdown is successful at stemming the virus! The apple tree is half a mile away, but the jeans shot is right outside my door, Rosa Luxembourg’s house is en route to my doctor and the pix playing in the leaves are between home and the grocery store (a quarter mile away), so I think these are all pretty lockdown-friendly locations. Most of them were taken with a timer (Oniekatraveller on IG gives good tips), but those people really did offer. The shot I was setting up was clearly way off target. They came out of the courtyard & did that awkward thing where you realize you’re in someone’s pic & try to get out of the way while apologizing. They offered to do it, so I thanked them for recognizing why i was hanging around so strangely & for the offer, as i handed them the phone. It was fun to find a way to extend the shorts season just a little.

CarolS, I love my city, am always happy to show it, even just a little. I’m glad you see the link I fancied seeing between the Klimt shirt and my hair. Pic 18 turned out way better than expected—I was basically trying to find a way to get my foot out of the leaves, to make footwear visible, unlike in 19 (which is an awful shot, but it shows the blue jacket on its own).

Thanks MsMaven. Your own smiling photos are always inspiring. Shorts + tights isn’t a new concept, but it’s new to me & I’m having fun exploring.

I love that we get a glimpse of Berlin in your photos! These are all fun, creative outfits, and you look like you are having so much fun wearing them!

Even if there happens NOT to be a colour in your hair to match the new t-shirt, I think the swirls echo the curl/wave in your hair just beautifully.

In 18 you remind me (in the best possible way) of a kid playing in the rain. I think you could wear tights in place of the socks, too, if you neede more coverage/warmth.

Not sure why the last shorts/leggings look doesn't work. Maybe the shape of the shorts is a factor. Maybe different leggings and/or a different top would read totally differently. Like, this might just not be the combo for these shorts - but the concept might be fine. Onward!

Thanks for sharing!

Fun, original outfits and great photos. You have really hit your stride. My favourite is the skort outfit. It works very well with the suede jacket and shoes.

What is the skort made from? It looks like a heavy cotton. I think maybe the last shorts don’t work because the fabric is too light and the shape not flares enough (as you said). I think it works best with shorts that have a more skirt like silhouette.

And of course I love your gold scrolled (Klimt inspired) Met tee, as mine is the same

What a lovely, joyful set of photos as always! You always make me smile. Your outfits are so much fun and I love your creativity. My favorites here are no 1 and no 9. I love the suede jacket - it suits you so beautifully. Outfit 9 is fun, a little badass and nicely polished and pulled together. The berry tights are great! No 17 is a fun idea - different. It does look intentional. I am not sure about these specific shorts though. Maybe a bit to narrow? I don’t know…. I really like the double jackets and the pattern mix, and the colour scheme. It is just the proportions, that I stumble on a little. Maybe a little shorter and wider shorts? Or a skirt?
I have a similar clasp for necklaces, a simpler one in a form of a ring. I think it is from the early 90ies. I find it super practical and wear it when I want to shorten a necklace - to wear double rows, but when the necklace is otherwise to short to pull over my head in double IYKWIM. The clasp is worn in the back of my neck and not visible. I am really glad for this mechanism - works well with long pearls for example.

ah the changing of the seasons is it 70F spring or 70F fall....ie is it sunny and dry or overcast and damp...somedays its just so hard to get it right...
i have to say that i'm not a personal fan of knee socks, but i get what you are trying to do in 17-20, for me #17 just feels like a lot of different things thrown together, but with the dark shoe it looks intentional, and with the yellow jacket it looks even more intentional and pulled together
i love the way you picked up the metallic in your shoes in #9-#11 with the tee shirt! and the cranberry tights are a really nice touch

Such great photos that capture the change of season. My favourites are in photos 1 and 9. Your matching of the shorts and tights works so well and I agree, that having the shorts flare out, helps make the combination look streamlined and intentional.

There is something compelling about the long shorts with socks, a Euro hiker look that is fun, especially photo 18 which made me smile. Enjoy those beautiful Autumn leaves.

With temps predicted back up in the 60s, I figured this was my golden opportunity to wear shorts. I played with this look with one pair last year, and wanted to expand a bit.

First up is a true skort—half skirt (the front) and half shorts (hidden by an unhelpful strap in the rear view). After stressing over needing tights/leggings to match the stitching on the skort, I realized I could do a column of color. The headshot, intended to show the mock T neck, surprised me; the collar isn’t as high as I’d thought. Beyond that, I hadn’t realized just how much these colors are neutral for me/reflective of my own coloring. The apples I shook from the tree were for a crumble.

I don’t know what this kind of necklace is called; my mom came across them and got them for us all in the 80s. Instead of putting the strands of beads around your neck, you hook them onto the clasp, twist them, and then close the other end. Does anyone else have/remember these necklace systems?

The next day I did “regular” shorts in a different outfit than I used them for last year. Looking for a backdrop, I realized the house I was in front of is where Rosa Luxembourg used to live! She and Ida B Wells are role models and heroes for me; they wrote forcefully with logic that was condidered at the time to be masculine and they balanced theory and praxis. I’ve gotten flack for being “too analytic” because of how my brain works, can’t imagine what they must’ve put up with! More importantly, their work is excellent, something for me to strive for. Anyway, current residents of Luxembourg’s former home are happy to take one’s picture with Rosa’s plaque, even if they sometimes chop off your feet. The T-shirt is one I ordered from the Met; my mom tried to mail it to me a couple times, but it was always returned to sender. I could finally pick it up a couple weeks ago. With all the colors in my hair, there must be one that matches that gold!

Wednesday was supposed to be 66, so I planned to wear a jersey knit skirt and tank top, slipping a top layer on when I went to the pool. But it wasn’t “that” kind of 66! It was stormy and felt chilly. All the layers I had to put on to stay warm at home looked ridiculous, so I switched into jeans to go out (but I skipped the pool!) The outfit pic convinces me that I’m right to look for a smaller size jeans.

Thursday is heading into the home stretch, but I cranked up the questionables with double plaid jackets and knee socks + shorts. Seeing this rack of shirts recently brought the black/blue/yellow jacket to the top of my mind. The stripe on the shirt is white, rather than yellow, but I still find it strikingly similar. I’ve seen the socks around, but haven’t paid careful attention to how it’s done. Maybe the shorts should be shorter. These socks come up over my knees, but then slip down. I also wasn’t sure if I wanted the cognac shoes to bookend the golden headband and saffron colors in my jackets or the navy loafers which are lower contrast with the black socks. I felt like putting the loafers & socks together was a way of saying the blue top and black socks were intentional, because the baseball jacket has both colors. I got a chance to test the waterproofing on the jacket, and then the sun shone through. It was a very blustery day, with a wind advisory because of low pressure systems Ignaz and Hendrik. The headband pic was taken after I got home. Your suggestions, please!

Today (Friday) it’s even worse—both the weather and the ootd, lol. I’m now luxuriating at home in my leggings. If I need to leave the house, I will probably put on my brown damask pants. But if you have other ideas, I’d love to hear them! I’m particularly interested in why these shorts so clearly don’t work with leggings. Even before I put my top on, we could tell this was a fail. Why? My current theory is that shorts need a slight flare in the legs for them to work with tights/leggings.

Thanks for looking, and for laughing, and for comments and suggestions.

ETA just realized I do have a pic of the blue plaid jacket that isn’t as awful as 19; I’m adding it at the end (& hiding 19)
