Sarah, thank you for sharing this. Please know that you and your family are always in my prayers. A good friend of my husband's lost their daughter to cancer 2 years ago. They are very involved with the Jay Fund in Jacksonville, FL, which is another wonderful organization.

Traci, my heart and prayers go out to your and your family too. Wishing you all the strength and courage to get through this difficult time.

Sarah, I have only just read this thread and I want to say thank you so much for sharing. I agree that much more should be done to combat childhood cancers. I work next door to Boston Children's Hospital and often see the children (and their parents) who are there to receive treatments. It's heartbreaking but at the same time I am always impressed by how upbeat and hopeful they are.

Traci, thank you for sharing as well. I am thinking of you and Iris and wishing for the best possible outcome for her. (((Hugs)))

Hi Sarah - I just wandered over to the "Off Topic" page and found your thread - and once again, saw the beautiful images of your sweet Ellie. It is too late tonight for me to read the articles/organizations that you have linked to - but I will take the time to read them this weekend! I am grateful that you have shared your "self" with us - your courage and wisdom is so inspiring to me. I am also so glad that I know about Ellie - and that I can help keep her memory alive by getting involved in concrete ways to fight cancer! And, please know Sarah that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Traci - my heart breaks for you and for your daughter, Iris. Take care of yourself, be kind to yourself - and know that there is no "right" or "wrong" way to deal with this type of crisis. Just listen to yourself and the people in your life that you trust! I am praying for you and for Iris!

Abc, Sally, Bettycrocker, and Laurie : thank you for your kindness and sweet words of support. That is just so incredibly meaningful to me. Laurie, I am so sorry for all that you have had to endure, and yet you are so caring for the suffering of others. That is a priceless gift. I hope that you are doing well now, and I love that you are supporting others along your journey.

Sarah,
Just reading this thread. My response is tearful.
The only thing worse than having cancer is having someone you love suffer from, and lose a battle with, cancer. The very, very worst of all is what you have had to endure, it's just unimaginable. My heart is truly overflowing for you.

I'm involved with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as a cancer survivor and a participant with Team in Training to raise funds to cure blood cancers. So, I'm really familiar with the success with ALL, but it is truly shocking to see the statistics for funding levels and the lack of advancement in other areas of childhood cancer. We must all do as much as possible to raise awareness and promote this issue.

When I was sick everyone would say, "You are so strong" "I couldn't do it" Well, we are strong and we can do things that are - before they ever happen - absolutely unthinkable. But no one should have to go through what you and your family have faced. Thank you for turning your pain into something positive here. We are all here to listen, learn and lift up you and the others on this thread who are suffering similar situations.

Much love to all here. Laurie

I have just found this thread today, too, and want to say I can't imagine what it's like to lose a child to cancer. My father had cancer and managed to beat it, so I do know what it's like to have a loved one with cancer, and understand the importance of raising awareness. We need to fight this! It takes so many precious lives.

Sarah, I have only just read this thread today and wanted to thank you for sharing this information. You are brave, wise and lovely, and your daughter is just beautiful. Education and money are so vital, and it is such a battle to get both. In NZ we have a wonderful cancer foundation and one of our good friends is a clever oncologist, but there are still so many sad outcomes.

Traci, my thoughts are with you. With something as traumatic as this there is no right way to handle it, only the best way that you can. I can only imagine it is a really really tough time right now. Iris is lucky to have you and if you wish to share more information on the forum I am sure there will be a lot of support for you.

You were definitely already on the same page with your handbag without even knowing it. Love it! :-) And most of all, thank you for the love for my sweet girl.

Ankita: Your empathy is so comforting. What a special dad you must have to care for children - it really does take a wonderful sort of person to do that. I'm so sorry for your losses... That is so painful. Hugs back! <3

Eliza: I am so glad that your child was able to come through such a scary ordeal. I know that you know first hand how unbearable it is to watch your child suffer... I'm sorry you had to go through that. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But I do love hearing of any child who beats the odds. That makes my heart so happy. xoxo

Sarah I'm so so sorry for your loss...just reading this has me crying. I know no words will ever be enough, but this moved me to amother level... the statistics are beyond belief. My dad is a doctor himself, a child's specialist to be exact and Ive seen all my life how he works day & night for making a difference.
You're such a strong woman Sarah for sharing this with us and letting us share such a personal, emotional side of your life, and i salute you for that. Ellie was a beautiful beautiful girl and her smile resonated that ☺
I have cancer in the family on my mother's side, my grand dad passed away from cancer and so did one of my aunt's (mum's sister) a few years ago...and I was particularly fond of her... I know it's not an easy journey for loved ones and I wish there's more that we all could do for those going through it.
Once again thank you for sharing ☺
Sending you the biggest hug possible love

Sarah, I am really glad you shared this. You have my support and love!

The son of one of my friends just completed a bike ride across the USA to raise funds for children with cancer. I'm so impressed and proud of him. Here's the Facebook page if anyone is interested: https://www.facebook.com/bw4kf.....38;fref=ts

A dear friend of mine has been battling multiple myeloma for going on 16 years. She is amazing. It's unheard of to survive that diagnosis for so long, but she fights to stay alive for her four children and her husband. I cannot even begin to imagine how hard this would be for a child to endure.

Traci, I am sorry to hear of your daughter's illness. I am sending you and your family prayers as well. I hope her treatment is successful!

Cancer just sucks. The day cannot come soon enough that a true cure is found.

Sarah, thank you so much for sharing this. I can't do any more than echo what Angie has so eloquently said. You are such a strong and loving woman and a gift to all of us here. My love to you and your family. I will absolutely go gold this month with you.

On a sidetone, I chuckled a little bit reading how Ethan was mis-named. When my DD was a toddler, she went to a regular babysitter who sometimes also looked after an older boy called Nathan. But Maia kept wanting to call him Ethan. Eventually she settled on NETHAN. ;)

Traci, thank you also for sharing -- I can only imagine the pain you are going through now. Wishing strength and renewed health to you and your beautiful daughter.

Style Fan: I just wanted to say thank you for working in a place where you had to be exposed to so much suffering every day. I don't know how you did it, and I admire you so much for it!

Una: Thank you for the love, and of course for appreciating my Ellie girl! Having a friend who is a pediatric oncologist, you must know how much sadness she is exposed to. I am not sure how the doctors and nurses manage without completely unravelling. They have such a passion for helping these kids... and yet they are hindered at every turn from giving the kind of care that they want to. It is heartbreaking. Please give your friend a giant hug from me!

Deborah: Thank you for the love! And especially for the love and prayers. She will need it for this journey...

Isabel: What interesting information on Retinoblastoma. I am less familiar with that one, but it is heartening that there has been such great change in the death rates... And yes, it is mind boggling how much research and money goes to some things when children are suffering the way that they are. It is truly a money game, and that is what is so sad. Thank you for your indignation and your sweet support! <3

Deb: Thank you for your willingness to wade through the sadness and become informed. That is all that I could ever hope for and I appreciate it SO much!

Angie: As always, your words are comforting and encouraging. I am so grateful that you have provided a place on this forum for us all to get to know each other better and share personal things. And thank you for your willingness to read the information in spite of the emotions. That means so much to me.

Traci: Again, I just want you to know how much my heart is with you right now. Seeing your child like that just does things to a mother's heart... You already sound like you are doing exactly what you know you need to do for yourself. There is no right or wrong way to go through this - you have to figure out what is best for your family as you go, and what you need. I was a lot like you - I didn't find it good to connect too deeply with other families. It is a lot to take on that many different stories and children when you are fighting so hard to keep everything together for your own. That is something that just works out over time as you reach out for what you need when you need it. And thank you for sharing that photo. The truth of what goes on is not always easy to see, but it is important. Your Iris is in the fight of her life and it is such hard work. So much love to you and Iris!!

Oh, Sarah. My heart goes out to you. I can't imagine the ongoing pain of your loss. You are sooo emotionally intelligent and in touch with your feelings. You are a role model to us all. Thank you for sharing this information. It was a hard read, but I'm glad I read it. I'm choked up and tearful seeing your precious Elly again.

Traci, my heart goes out to you and Iris too. It's all heart breaking. Iris is lucky to have you there for her. She is drawing more courage and strength from you than you can imagine.

Much love to both Sarah and Traci.

Hi Sarah, I was incredibly touched by your post. I love seeing pictures of the incredibly courageous and beautiful Ellie.

TRACI : I don't have words...except that I am so sorry and that I will think of you so often.

sarah, I will wear gold. A watershed moment for me in my life was when I did cancer research ( 25 yrs ago ) on retinoblastoma. It was horrible. Almost all of our patients died and they were all under 1. Today it does't happen anymore with that cancer but so many other pediatric cancers have not been so readily approachable and the trajectory changed.

You, of course, are correct about the research. Pediatric research is a very difficult thing for many reasons. Yet one has to shake one's head at how much more money has been put into erectile dysfunction research than many pediatric cancers.

We need to demand more.

I am in the car so I can't really post much or reply to everyone but just quickly wanted to say to Traci that I am SO glad you said something and that I totally understand your reasons! That photo of sweet Iris speaks volumes... I know what kind of suffering that is. I am so sorry for all this means for her and for your family. I will be praying for her!

Hi Sarah,
Thank you for sharing this.

I hope I'm not hijacking, but your post moved me to come out of the closet with my family's current struggle. My 17 year old daughter, Iris, was just diagnosed with Ewing Family Sarcoma last month. We are currently in hospital on day 5 of her second round of chemo.
I haven't posted yet for two reasons. 1. I wanted to keep this space not about that. 2. I'm not really ready to connect with other families yet. I can't even wrap my head around our circumstances. As cathartic as it may be in the future, I just can't take in anyone else's details.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I want to close with a picture I took of Iris yesterday, fighting off nausea while getting chemo, sunlight streaming in on her.

How can I? I am aware of the Gold month program as a friend of mine here in Canada is posting about it as well. The pictures of Ellie are so profound and personal, I feel I can almost touch her through the screen. What a beautiful soul.
