Thanks for the great additional recommendations! My own trip to Chicago is coming up soon. I wondered if anyone is familiar with these two consignment stores that I found online; they both sounded good but of course you never know...
Cynthia’s Consignment (http://www.cynthiasconsignments.com/index.htm)
and "Recycle" in Wicker Park
Any feedback on these? (Or other gems I shouldn't overlook?)

Hello-I live fairly close to Chicago and go at least once per month. Love Adobo Grill for Mexican and also Fronterra Grill. For Italian Rosebud on Rush is very good. A wonderful lunch spot just a few blocks East of Michigan Ave. is Coco Pazo Cafe. On a beautiful day the outside tables for people watching cannot be beat. I have only attended the Chocolate Buffet at The Penninsula once several yrs. ago but it was amazing. Agree that Lincoln Park is a good place for boutique shopping (ask a cab to go to Armitage and Halstead and you will be in the middle of the shops in Lincoln Park. Oak St. is great window shopping for me but way over my price range for puchases. Pretty much evey store is on Mich. Ave. beginning with Nordstoms at once end (right over the bridge on Mich. Ave.) to the Bloomingdales Mall at the opposite end to the North. I LOVE Chicago, hope you do too.

Please go to the old Marshall Field's store - I think its a Macy's now - its a historic part of Chicago you shouldn't miss. For the architecture and the shopping! Also, Water Tower Place used to be good for shopping, but I don't know if it still is. The Merchandise Mart is sometimes a fun lobby to walk around in depending on what kind of shows they have going on.

Ana, I just wanted to report back - I made it to Lou Malnati's when I was in Chicago last week and the pizza was GREAT! My friend and I got quite a workout with our walk there and back, but it we agreed it was worth it! (Out of curiousity, have you tried Giordano's? People were raving about it to me, but it was too pricey for us.)

Thanks everyone for the great tips on shopping and eating. I can't wait for my trip in May... I'll definitely eat Greek food and I do want to try out Frontera or Topolobampo, which I had read about in a "foodie" book before.

Thanks for the tip, Angie. I was using it as a point of reference because I'm attending a concert at the Grand Ballroom and staying at a hotel in the area. And since it seems to cost an arm and a leg to park anywhere, we'll need walking distance food.

Thanks everybody for all the great tips. Now I have to decide which places I want to try. That is going to be tough! We do have reservations at Swissotel, but would take any suggestions. We can cancel if somebody thinks we should. Does anybody know anything about this hotel? On their website it looks awesome!

Steph, you are making me hungry! I'm going to Chicago this month, but unfortunatly I won't have much time for anything besides the event I'm going for. I really did want to try some Chicago-style pizza though - any good (affordable) places around the Navy Pier?

I used to live in Chicago and just came back from a trip there, so I have a few suggestions.

For food in Greektown, try Greek Islands or Pegasus. Many of the restaurants in Greektown (including Pegasus, I think) have rooftop decks, which are so nice when the weather is great.

In terms of other restaurant recommendations, I second the Lou Malnati's suggestion. I would also recommend a restaurant called Green Zebra. It is actually a mostly-vegetarian restaurant, with one or two meat/fish dishes. It is very popular, with most of their clients not being vegetarians. The food and flavors are just perfect and you really can't go wrong. If you are looking at the menu, know that the plates are deliberately a little smaller, so you would typically order three plates (unless you weren't very hungry).

Nicole's recommendation of Tru is great. It's pricier, but considered one of Chicago's best restaurants. Another recommendation, if you like Mexican food, would be Topolobambo or Frontera Grill. They are sister restaurants--right next door to each other. Topolobambo is a high-end Mexican eatery, while Frontera is more casual. I don't think you will go wrong with any of those suggestions. If you like Spanish tapas, I am a big fan of Emilio's.

As for shopping, Bucktown, Wicker Park and Lincoln Park are all good options. In Lincoln Park the boutiques tend to be more independent (although there is an Intermix and a Barney's Coop), but the prices can still be high. It varies, though. In Bucktown, they have a bunch of designer stores. Another place for designer stores is Oak Street, which is one block from Michigan Avenue's "Magnificent Mile."

I also have good hotel recommendations if you are interested!

(Just back from a weekend trip; wow, this forum is active, there are tons of fun and useful posts to catch up on!)

I looked at the comments to the Chicago post, thanks for the link Angie. So it sounds like there are some good boutiques in the Wicker Park, Bucktown and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. Follow-up questions, if I may: What kind of price ranges are we talking here? Is this high end designer stuff, or local designers' clothes at affordable prices, or something in-between? What kind of dress style are these boutiques targeting? Does it vary across these neighborhoods? I need to maximize my time so it would be super to get a little more info.
Thanks in advance!

And Angie, I'd love to hear more specifics about good Greek food. I LOVE Greek food (I eat it often when I'm in Germany, but rarely here in Seattle, as there really isn't much.)

OMG, this is so timely, as I just wanted to post the same type of query. I'm going to Chicago for work in May, and wondered about:

- great places to shop for earrings (I like funky bold colorful earrings, which I often buy at small neighborhood stores, from local jewelers or at craft fairs)

- great places for other accessories like scarves and belts

- great consignment stores (for current things) or vintage stores

- any other tips for good shopping (not high end, and not the typical chain stores that we also have in Seattle)

Any ideas? I will be staying near Northwestern University, but will likely have an extra day at the end of my stay, so I can travel to other neighborhoods as well.

THanks tons in advance for any Chicago tips!

If anybody has suggestions on hotels, restaurants or bars that would be great. Not any clubs, just nice places for a few married girls to hang out for drinks and conversation. Thanks!
