To piggyback off the 'tan footwear' idea, my version of 'light' coloured footwear tends to be gold or bronze/ copper instead. I find this looks more intentional than tan, blush or white on me (instead of like I tried but failed to match my shoes to my skintone lol), whilst still looking spring appropriate.

Aw, thanks Angie. My eyes are brown. I think a cotton jacket in olive or cognac could be a good Spring addition. I will keep an eye out. And try not to be negative!

Brooklyn, I understand your complex feelings about blue, and thanks for explaining them. (Are your eyes green, hazel, blue or brown? My late Mum's big blue eyes did match the blues she wore - which helped). You are very beautiful, stylish, poised, confident, and FAR from worn and washed out! Trust me!

My Mama liked her blue denim with earth tones. Lots of brown, toffee, forest, cinnamon, gold and mustard. Or dusty pink. She loved white and cream jeans too - and wore them with the same types of colours - and shocking pink. With black too. But brown bag and shoes.

I 100% respect your feelings. Always on the side of the wearer! I can think you look sublime in a blue denim jacket! But unless you like it too - it's a non-starter. Sooooo onto the DIY denim jacket dying project!

These are nice for you too

This looks light and fresh, a beautiful palette on you. For me, wearing less flattering colours can work if I combine them with my better colours, but only up to a point.

It is interesting to hear your thoughts on blue and your instinct to steer away from it makes sense. I am the same with mustard and burnt orange, these colours kill my complexion. They gives me dark circles around my eyes and makes me look jaundiced.

Thanks Jaime!

Thanks Angie! Good tips. It’s nice to be compared to your stylish mother

My issue with blue is complex. I do wear teal blue, and blue as part of a pattern. Lighter blues with dark green for example. But I find medium and lighter blues, especially in denim, very unflattering near my face. It’s something about the cool and worn effect of denim (which I’m otherwise very fond of) near my pale, worn and washed out face (if I’m being honest, I do try not to be negative here) that really depresses me. Admittedly I feel that with lots of other colours too (white, cream and light grey come to mind, and they are all colours that I like).

I also find blue difficult to colour mix with black, which is my favourite neutral. I don’t enjoy it with burgundy, even though that’s a classic pairing. I don’t enjoy it with white (too fresh for my style and I don’t wear white much these days anyway). I do like it with cognac and caramel tones. That’s a frequent pairing for me in winter, but with blue away from my face (blue jeans, tan/caramel/cognac top).

I have a Zara denim jacket that I’ve kept for a while with the intention of dyeing it teal. Maybe this Spring I will give it a go and see.

Brooklyn, I wrote a post that might be of interest:

https://youlookfab.com/2019/03.....d-weather/

Furthermore, it dawned on me last week that you have very similar colouring to my late Mama! She wore and rocked almost exactly the same colours as you. Earth tones galore, teals, olive, creams, white, dusty pinks, fuchsia, khakis, browns, forest, burgundy, black, and LOTS of big gold jewellery. She more metallic mustard, bronze, and gold to my wedding :)

She ALSO wore blue. She had big dark blue eyes so it worked well. She wore mid-tone murky blues, blue-green, navy in patterns with mustard, blue jeans with a tan or green wash to them. So a more brown-blue denim jacket could work for you! I passed on this G-Star denim jacket because it was too green (pic1). Or you can go for a denim wash that is quite brown (pic 2).

FWIW, my two cents :)

Thanks merwoman!

Thanks Suz. The skirt is my favourite. Best Buy of 2021. I never used to think about seasonal capsules until I came here. I thought of Autumn as being roughly equivalent to Spring. And temperature wise there is a commonality. But increasingly I’m aware, as I think you already were, of the need to treat them as separate.

UmmLila, yes to cappuccino! I’m seeing items labelled latte too. Sounds much more enticing than “warm beige”.

What a gorgeous outfit. That skirt is a wardrobe hero for you.

I'm cool toned and wear "true summer" colours all year but definitely veer to the darker end of my spectrum in fall and winter. By springtime, I agree -- the light makes too much dark feel off, somehow. So I like to lighten up, and for me that typically means lighter tops, as well, for all the reasons you mention. It is easier to make a summer palette work for spring, of course, so my job at that end of the year is not too hard, especially now that I'm in a more temperate zone. It was quite difficult when I lived in a colder climate. The light still changes there -- but the temps mean you need to cover up more. And it was hard to find warm sweaters in "spring-like" tones.

Meanwhile, I sometimes have the analogous problem in autumn. Most autumn tones look dreadful on me. (I adore them, so my whole house is filled with them to compensate). The only ones that work for me, really, are teal (which I love but rarely wear) and magenta (probably because it is cooler). And I can wear burgundy if it is more berry or purple than brown. So that is typically what I do -- I amp up the magenta and burgundy and wear with mustard accessories. I also use some taupe as my tan and that works pretty well.

Thanks CG. Our Spring is cold (relative to Summer). For the first 2 months or so. For about 2 months of Autumn I can just continue to wear my Summer clothes. At the end of Autumn it starts to feel right to layer up and wear darker clothes. But in Spring it can feel wrong, even though it’s actually colder than it was for most of Autumn. But it’s all relative. I notice in Spring Trinny will say things like “it’s going to be 16 today, so quite warm”. What! That’s my definition of cold!

Nikki, thanks. I love boots with bare legs! Liberating after Winter. I do wear socks too :)

Aquamarine, I would like to do more of that. If I could just find some nice pants in tan…

Cat2, I had to look up linden green. I’ve actually bought a tee in that colour for Spring! I plan to tie dye it. I know Tanya says that she has separate colour capsules for different seasons. Maybe that’s something I should think about doing. I’m going to ponder that.

Thanks Star.

Thanks Irina. Wet weather is a whole other challenge. We’ve had wet weather for most of the year and it’s made me realise how unprepared I am. We had drought for about 4 years up to 2020 so it didn’t seem necessary. Lightweight rain coats, for when the weather is warming, are hard to find.

Angie, thanks! I don’t think there’s any part of the year in which light or bright colours look wrong. It’s maybe a little unusual in deep winter, but it’s unusual in a refreshing way. I wish I could wear blue. I looked at a Spring editorial for a retailer I like and 19/20 outfits featured blue. The last one was pink. Sigh!

Suntiger, thanks. Shoes in cognac and tan are generally available all the time. But tops, skirts, jackets and dresses aren’t. I too am really enjoying black with camel, tan and bronze. I’m wondering if we should be stocking up.

Great outfit,l love the colour palette.l have never really thought about this in terms of colour, more in terms of weight of garment so l guess for me it happens organically as l move into lighter clothing the colours tend to be lighter too.We don’t really seem to have distinct springs anymore. It’s winter then it’s summer so l guess that obviates the need for a transitionary spring wardrobe.

Love this! Now that camel and rust are available, I've been leaning on them, particularly my camel coat. Even in deep winter last year I wore it a lot. The combo of camel sweater + black vest worked well for me too. I have bare arms a good deal of the year, and wearing camel on top in cold weather sort of creates the same vibe.

Yes to cognac boots, though haven't found my tall ones. They're basically nude to me, may they never disappear from shops!

With the exception of burgundy and neon, I wear the same palette year round. I never wear dark from head to toe, so that part is not adjusted.

Like you though, I absolutely lighten up in the Spring, which is cold in Seattle. I haul out more white and cream, and throw in brights and pastels more frequently. I continue to wear navy. And in the Summer wear a lot of white with blue.

That said, I look like Spring in the middle of Winter too!

Love how the sweater’s color works with color of your hair and repeated with boots. Very harmonious.
Our springs are usually cold and I don’t have a strategy for dressing. Wearing outwear clothes that are not black is probably the only thing I do. The light color coats and jackets are my recent obsession :)

Thanks Sally. I’m looking forward to more warm days ahead. The days are already noticeably longer.

Jessi, I always think that white boots are a great way to wear boots all year round because the lightness negates the heaviness of the boots. Tan is my white!

MJ, thank you. But I think you always look sparkling and bright, even in the depths of winter

That's a lovely outfit Brooklyn - you are so good at proportions.

I do have a few pieces that I look forward to wearing in spring. And I agree a flash of skin and light footwear can really help lighten the palette. I think your strategies really work for you and could help others who favour a darker palette.

Thanks KG. Yes, tan boots really lighten the palette. Glad to hear you are wearing your boots in Summer too!
