Thanks kkards!! I do enjoy my clothes both the simple and the more trendy.

Suntiger - yes - it’s been a fair bit of shopping, The mustard blazer was purchased online in 2020 second hand. I still like it but have put it aside for a few months. I don’t plan to edit it out as blazers are expensive and I think I will come back to it.

I like the satin skirt especially!
Welcome to Team Failed at 25 yearly purchases- I did too :)
Surprised you're not wearing the mustard blazer. I thought you just got it pretty recently.

But mostly I want to say congratulations on enjoying what you own and successfully adding pieces that felt right and allowed you to appreciate what you had

Thanks Suz! It’s all a bit arbitrary really as I am not over purchasing beyond what I can afford nor am I buying more than I store.

I have slightly increased the amount of active wear I own due to a change in habits and routine.

One in one out is possibly a better strategy for me now.

Late to respond here but these seem like thoughtful decisions. Like Angie, I don't count my gear purchases as part of the regular closet, even though there is a bit of crossover with hiking stuff in particular. As she said, they are "basics" like undies -- needed to to the job! So I consider those, PJ's, and the gear as separate. Of course it all comes out of the same budget in the end so that can feel like rationalizing, in a way. But it's also less confusing for me because if I count gear as part of my working closet and yet don't wear that stuff for regular wear -- I can fall short in my needs to create outfits I want to wear outside of gear-ish activities. By the same token, I can fail to buy enough gear for my gear purposes if I lump it all together with fashion. So it's a separate capsule in my mind and not part of the general closet.

Thanks Jaime. It’s the overconsumption I worry about- there’s only five second hand pieces in here. But as long as I keep snd wear them it’s okay!

Thank you Quietloud. I can be drawn to a lot of colours but narrowing it down has made it easier. If I want a completely different colour a dress is a good option for me.

Well I skim right over the numbers and read you have settled on a color palette and are enjoying your clothes. Success! You added some great pieces and got rid of what wasn't working. More success! Carry on .

Thanks Helena - I agree it’s hard to move down in purchasing!! Thank you for the lovely comment.

Robin - the all birds wore out after about four years. They were fab during COVID as a home shoe - I would repurchase and recommend.

Brooklyn - I am happy with colour mixing but finding the brights hard to mix with my muted shades - I also don’t like bright and black on me. I wonder if we will go back to stripes!!

Thank you Lyn. Yes lengths are important! I do like the stripe skirt but it’s become an orphan and I am not wearing it. The mustard blazer feels a bit too fitted for current trends but I do like it and since blazers are so expensive I think it’s worth keeping!!

Star - I checked the label and it’s worn out! They are a very stiff fabric - my pick is a blend. White and dry clean only is not a good combination!!

Thanks Bijou - as the warm weather approaches I have some brights to wear! I am looking forward to that too!

Thanks Minaminu - it is Cue - purchased second hand. A real classic piece to own.

Thank you Angie - I did add them but didn’t count them. You are right re the gear - I do have some crossover into weekend wear with gear but it’s purpose bought.

WELL DONE, Sal! You are doing brilliantly! Wooohooo!

If more black feels good and helps you achieve your goal of a leaner wardrobe - please carry on :)

FWIW, you can take gear out of "the less than 25 item additions" goal, because it's a wardrobe basic (especially when it does not crossover into casual wear). You don't add knickers and bras, so gear can be treated the same way!

YAY FOR BEING EXTRA FUSSY ABOUT LENGTHS! A few inches here and there makes a world of difference - visually, and mentally.

Thoughtful and fab additions! LOVE the bag!! Chic, versatile, and dressy.

Have you left out the new sunnies, or did I miss them....

Sal, you know I am such a huge fan of your style and cheering you for your thoughtful, sensible editing. You know what works for you and what you like; it's fantastic.

As to over-buying relative to your goals - been there, done that - it seems there is a bit of a shopping set-point that's tough to get below!! Still that's a fairly conservative number given style is an active interest .. and who knows, perhaps you will shop less than you think for the rest of the year, you never know!

I think if you run a lean closet you have to be very disciplined about your colour story. Or be a person who happily likes to mix up lots of colours.

Great analysis and new items, Sal! I am also out of stripes at the moment in tops, but cannot leave go them on bottoms-so I am sad for the stripe skirt- still happy you kept the mustard blazer, these are some forever items for my eyes-but you know better their longevity and practicality for your life. I am too a tallish person(171cm) and my experience proofs I too need constantly to be wary of making sure things are long enough for me- so I can very seriously relate to this part of your assesments-length it is all over very important for us, I think!:-)

You seem to have still been very thoughtful with your purchases so probably no need to worry about buying less. I also purchased much more than I intended but because they were all successful and I edited out by 1 in 2 out I am okay with it. Your colour scheme is very pretty and works for you. I agree with Bijou about the black and the stripes. I wrote you a long reply about me and stripes on my check-in thread :) Black is practical in a lot of instances. Interesting about Dry Clean Only item shrinking in the wash. Do you know what fabric it was?

A great analysis. I am similar with stripes, they go in and out of favour with me, I have to make sure that I feel like me in a striped item and not buy something because it looks chic on someone else. With the 90's being a major fashion influence, the domination of black is to be expected. I love seeing your colour palette, lilac, blush and caramel are gorgeous colours on you and work beautifully with black.

Here are the pieces that are no longer in my wardrobe:

The black coatigan, mustard blazer and white trousers are in the holding zone but I am not wearing them right now. The trousers were dry clean only but I washed them and they feel a bit tight (I honestly think they shrank). These are all good quality pieces that I thrifted between 2019 and 2022.

Everything else has gone - it mostly wore out, a couple were too short for my taste (black trousers, navy skirt and wine dress) or I just went off it (kimono and striped skirt)

I am tallish 5ft 8-9 and I need to be wary of making sure things are long enough for me.

Hi All

Just checking in on my goals:

Purchase less pieces - not successful

I have added 21 to date, which indicates I won't achieve under 25 for the year which was my aim. This includes gear and I have been active on the gear shopping front as well as adding both essentials and statements. I have made one mistake and there are few things that are yet to be tested as they were added out of season.

Update some workhorses- mostly successful

black joggers - my first replacement were a fail (too short) and have been sold and I have another replacement pair.

puffer or similar in a more modern shape- I ended up getting a puffer vest for work

updated denim(1-2) at least one being good for work - added in two pairs of wide leg trousers.

new merino gear top - have added three new merinos for activewear (there is some crossover into my everyday wardrobe too)

couple pieces of activewear (added two pairs of shoes, leggings and a sweatshirt)

tan slouchy handbag -(big success)

In addition I have added

two midi dresses

one midi skirt

two blazers (both second hand) - very happy with both of these

two shirts - one white and one black

eva birkenstocks

cream sandals (yet to wear as purchased out of season)

Define my colour palette better

Lots of black, white/cream , blush and lilac this year. More black than I intended but for work this is practical and helps me run a lean closet. I prefer black to navy at the moment.

Keep enjoying my wardrobe

That is happening. A few recent additions have made things feel fresh again. I have tweaked my winter style a bit this year - less scarves being the main change.

I edit all the time and due to a need to get into our high storage I have edited out some spring and summer pieces in advance. I will add the finds I have removed in the next comment. I seem to be off stripes at the moment - but that could change as I have worn out three striped pieces!!

Thanks in advance!
