Like <b>Angie</b>, I don't count my gear purchases as part of the regular closet, even though there is a bit of crossover with hiking stuff in particular. As she said, they are "basics" like undies -- needed to to the job! So I consider those, PJ's, and the gear as separate. Of course it all comes out of the same budget in the end so that can feel like rationalizing, in a way. But it's also less confusing for me because if I count gear as part of my working closet and yet don't wear that stuff for regular wear -- I can fall short in my needs to create outfits I want to wear outside of gear-ish activities. By the same token, I can fail to buy enough gear for my gear purposes if I lump it all together with fashion.
