Anchie, Idk where you were in the weight loss process when you first posted this, but I know one reason you decided to get an outfit a month this year is that your weight dropped lower than you intended and your old favorites didn’t fit any more. I’m curious if any new go-tos have emerged in the process of buying those.

I’ve never had go-tos, really. Am trying to figure out what I’m going to do now. My waist is back to 10” smaller than my hips, as I wanted, which means my pants are too big, particularly in the waist, and those I try on in stores are often too big in the waist if the hips fit. Like you, I’ve taken off more weight than I intended. I now weigh what I did in 6th grade, and recently got this notification from MyFitnessPal when I put in my latest weight. I have Hashimoto's and an enlarged thyroid, so I’m on the lowest dosage of replacement hormone; I am going to ask the doc if I can take less of it.

Freya for small band (28 & 30) large cup bras
Thorlo for well-padded exercise socks
Brooks for highly supportive walking shoes
NYDJ for jeans small enough in the waist
Zella (Nordstrom brand) for exercise clothing

One thing: If one finds great items in a particular brand and they last for years, by the time one is ready to buy replacements the brand may have changed completely in cut, fabrication, etc.

Undies: Jockey slip shorts (their "cooling" version is great during the summer)
Bras: Prima Donna bras and sports bras
Tees: Gap short sleeve tees (the Vintage Tee in grey)
Sweats: James Perse and One Golden Thread's Tree pants (and tees - so luscious, so $$$$ tho.)

Otherwise I'm willing to try different brands. I've defaulted to Gap often for khakis and casual tops (I'm old enough to remember the glory days of Gap back in the 80's - it's a habit with me).

Some items maybe more specific to me:
Support stockings: Ames Walker
Grippy house sox: Grip Joy

During my working days I was devoted to Spanx stockings and Hue trouser sox. And Lafayette 148 blouses.

I definitely have go-tos—

Uniqlo U line for well-designed tops, bottoms, and outer wear;

COS for pretty much anything & everything;

Unexpectedly, Old Navy for yoga wear, all cotton hoodies, cropped 100% cotton cardigans, and sports bras;

Athleta for shorts & skorts; and

Natori for bras.

Everlane has always been hit or miss for me, but I loved their Arc pant, so they are back on my radar.

Spanx: winter tights, no vpl undies, everyday bras (the ones now marketed as sports bras)

Hanes: basic/old fashioned/granny cotton panties with a covered waist band

Uniqlo: essentials like merino wool tnecks and matching cardis twin sets, one linen dress I wear all summer, packable puffer, and one or two items a year from their collabs. Really fond of jw Anderson and marimekko

Old navy: rockstar jeans
Athleta: joggers
Cos: dresses
Old jimmy Choo under Tamara Mellon: reliable comfy heels. I may need to give her new line more of a try.

As @LisaP says, the list has evolved as others changed their style view/value or my body shape changed to no longer match their fit.

I was about to make a post to ask about this myself but found this through a search.

Basic tops/vest tops: Filippa K (absolutely amazing quality. I've had tops that have had over 150 washes) and still no pilling, holes, unravelling hems etc. Still probably have another 100 washes in them. Transparent and sustainable.

Jeans: Denham (Dutch brand). Will choose their organic eco wash first.
Underwear: Sloggi (mainly for ease of ordering from abroad and being able to get some here inside Japan too)
"Leather" goods: Stella McCartney (vegan)
Hosiery: Wolford (Aurora line, cradle to cradle gold certified)

They aren't the most sustainable brands or most ethical, but like mentioned above, I had terrible experience with armed angels. The quality is very poor. Its not sustainable if it lasts half as long. I have found this with several other brands too so won't repurchase from them.
As much as I love people tree, the sizing just isn't right for me and my leggings didn't last as long as I thought they would of I'm honest.

Well Style Fan reminded me that I do have a go to: Chantelle for bras.
Otherwise it is catch as catch can on the second hand market, although I will always look more carefully at Current/Elliot and Frame for jeans, and vintage cashmere sweaters. And Dries Van Noten, Marni, Miu Miu and vintage Celine if I am so lucky !

Banana Republic - basic sweaters. Uniqlo - loungewear and undergarments. Massimo Dutti and COS - everything else. I like Vince and Eileen Fisher and buy it when I find something I like from Nordstrom Rack. I just ordered a couple of cashmere sweaters from Everlane - trying to expand my retail selection. With an exception of a pair of jeans and a couple of tops, these are the only brands I bought this year and a year before.
there are certain limitations - I would like to try Arket or Zesane but customs fees plus shipping make it too expensive for me.

I keep two lists, one of brands that have worked and one of brands that have not. I break them out by clothing, gear, shoes, and boots separately. I also list brands I would like to try. That way if I need something I have not purchased in a while, it’s easy to find a starting place. I find recommendations from other people most helpful if they say they have a similar figure or foot shape (duck feet for the win), and if I have time I note the brand they suggest if it’s not familiar to me.

I wish it were otherwise, but Uniqlo and Everlane tend to be go-to's for me. Both leave something to be desired from an ethics/sustainability standpoint, but they fit reliably well and almost always meet or exceed my expectations for quality. They've been really good sources for wardrobe-building.

I used to reliably find one or two things every year at Boden, but that hasn't been the case lately. Something about the colours/patterns/fabrics isn't speaking to me these days. Too many brights and jewel tones, and too much viscose and poly.

Patagonia and Athleta are both pretty well represented in my closet for gear/casual/crossover type stuff. Patagonia bottoms never fit me, Athleta's sometimes do. Pata jackets and shirts are great (the best flannels!).

Other, smaller brands I've been sufficiently impressed with to keep multiple items: Alex Mill, Amour Vert, Tradlands, and Not Perfect Linen. Then I have a lot of one-offs. I still have quite a bit of J Crew/Madewell stuff in my closet, but I try not to shop there anymore because most of it doesn't fit me well and the quality almost always disappoints these days. Thrifted vintage J Crew is another story...

Interesting topic. You know, I used to have several go-to brands/lables, but in the last few years , they've changed, or become irrelevant. The chain store labels are too inconsistent in quality and style and with the influx of great independent and smaller makers around, the choice is better and more interesting. What I wish I had is a go-to for lingerie/underwear. All I want to do is select , click and pay and have it done with . But no one brand seems to deliver, metaphorically.

My go to gear brand has been Athleta, and have kept most of what I've ordered. Sleep tops are A New Day (target). Knickers Wacoal. I love my Peruvian Connection stuff, but it's more hit or miss for me. They have the nicest prints though. I definitely want to have more go to brands, since I'm just shopping online now.

It's not so much as 'go-to' brand but more of a wishlist. I wish to make PECKD my got to brand! I have been following and exploring the world of Green Fashion for a couple of years. Most of the results are frankly disappointing.

Either brands fail to live up to the commitment of being sustainable or make a fool of green fashion lovers like me by claiming to have recycled their fabric when only half the fabric used in the making of the dress is recycled.

PECKD is the only brand I found to make the claim of being compostable. I did order from them. I am a little heavy on the bust so I had to get it customized. It took about twelve days to reach me, but I am happy with the shirt! I am not very fond of white, but if wearing white helps me keep the fashion industry clean, I am willing to try it.

They seem inconsistent with their pricing. But I guess they have to pay for the different kinds of fabric they use.

So far I love it.

That’s what I need to figure out—brands made locally, or at least in good labor conditions, of fabric made sustainably (so cotton, which I love, shouldn’t be from fields or factories that make surrounding farms die of thirst.) And their things should fit me well and fit my style. No biggie, right?

Of course I don’t have that (yet). There are brand names I recognize, but generally I have go-to stores rather than brands.

I find it good to have some brands to rely on; I agree the retail landscape is too diverse and overwhelming otherwise. Also, no way to judge longevity without prior experience. Sadly most brands can't cater to all of your needs every season :). I agree that go-to-brands make the most sense for basics and essentials - definitely not for statement pieces.

The German brand Armed Angels often works for my style and price point AND they're sustainable, but the fabric quality can be hit-or-miss. A sustainably made garment that lasts shorter than others isn't super sustainable obviously. I still rely on them a lot for the pieces that give my wardrobe personality.

Uniqlo and the BESTSELLER brands are fast fashion and don't treat their workers well but they often have essential-to-me styles with a good fit and pretty good longevity. If you have a hard time finding trousers that fit, you know how big of a plus it is for a brand to provide just that.

I used to love People Tree as another sustainable and affordable brand, but their prices have doubled over the last decade and the quality hasn't. I used to get PJ's on sale from them but the pair I got last year already shows more wear then a pair I've had for 5 years. Off my radar they go ...

I don't have any experience with Marks & Spencer, but I do have go-to brands I start with whenever I need to replace something. Especially basics like undies, bras, and tees. Even jeans, jackets, and sometimes shoes. Oh! And gear!

Banana Republic, Gap, and JCrew used to be my go-to for pants, but I don't really shop for pants much anymore.

I definitely agree, who wants to spend time looking everywhere and then you don’t know if quality is reliable or if items will fit. Usually I have a mix of online sources and real stores that I prefer— but these preferences change over time. I used to love J Crew but lately have fit issues with their tops. I loved COS when I lived near one. Now I pass by a Uniqlo often, so I pop in when I need something. I find myself less patient with online orders lately and prefer to try on and buy in person.

Recently I have discovered that Marks and Spencer work brilliantly for my sleepwear and loungewear needs. Their tees, joggers and pajamas are inexpensive but great quality and fit. I am also planning to test their underwear too - does anyone have experience with it?

I realized how much easier is if you have a go to brand for certain items. I am indecisive by nature and the more choices I have, it is more difficult for me to make a decision. Huge amount of choices can overwhelm me.

So I started thinking that it will be great to have a go to brands for other things too. I don’t want to limit my self to certain brands, but if some brands work for me, it will definitely help with more focused online shopping.

I do actually have a go to brands for some other categories. For example, all my handbags are Coccinelle. It happened kind of organically, I had a hard time finding good quality leather handbags with silver hardware in colors that I like, with reasonable prices, and then when I discovered Coccinelle and had a great success with it, I stopped looking at other brands. When I need a new sweater, I first check Banana Republic and Boden.

I used to have a go to brands for pants, but they unfortunately don’t work for me anymore and I am looking for a new one. I had a great luck with J. Crew Remi pants recently, they are currently my almost only good fitting pants. I haven’t tried any of their other style yet, but planning to. Maybe is J. Crew my new go to brand for pants?

I think this strategy works best for basics, essentials and completers. I would probably not use it for statement pieces that usually comes from
most unexpected places.

Tell me, do you have a similar strategy and if you do, can you share your go to brands?
