I would love to have a system, but I don't. I have only a couple of coats, so there's not much to coordinate anyway. One coat is a dusty blue color that is a neutral, and the other is black, so they go with pretty much all of my winter accessories. I have two pairs of mittens, both black, and then hats in various colors. I have a couple of scarves in neutral colors (black and dusty blue). I wish I had more of a selection of outerwear, but those items are very expensive, and I often have difficulty finding coats that fit right.

One approach would be to identify workhorses and duplicate them, and designate a repository for strays and pieces you'd rather refresh ( I <3 euphemisms ) or dry before re-wearing. And building in a weekly (or so) routine of renewing the set-up. In the specific setting where I have working familiarity with this approach, there's a lineup of stacks of gloves, hats, and scarves on a shelf above the coat hooks in each mudroom. If it's just you you need to organize, that's practically bonbons and pedicures level of freedom and leisure. Just kidding. Seriously, on the ranch side, you'll get a lot of time-and-sanity mileage out of being able to reach for warm, dry, clean-enough functional accessories without thought. Worth investing in.

On the fashion side, I can only sign everything Joy wrote, including layering scarves.

I wanted to add that lighter weight coats like trench coats may need both a set of heavy weight accessories and lighter weight ones, depending on the weather and how much you may want to stretch seasons for wearing the coat. I have a J Crew wool stadium coat that can be worn in colder weather than usual with warm scarves, gloves and hat, for example. My new olive SE coat is probably also going to be in that category. You may want to add boots or leg warmers to your coat capsules.

Because people mostly see me dressed in a coat when out and about in cold weather, I try to have a capsule of accessories for each coat. I try to blend, not necessarily match the coat. I still wear lighter weight scarves with an outfit under the coat many times. In the capsule I try for gloves that will fit in a pocket, at least one scarf, and a hat or beanie, although those may be worn with multiple coats because I try to match my hair. Dog walking coats get the most attention.

No true system, just a hodgepodge. My coats right now are all neutral -- black, navy, olive. So are my gloves and mittens: navy lightweight gloves, undyed ragg wool mitts, and a pair of very thick insulated mitts in dark brown (which will need to be replaced soon). Hats run the gamut, but my favourites are a bright red toque, and beanies in light grey and sage. My most-worn scarves are white, olive, and black watch plaid. When I replace my insulated/waterproof mitts, I'd love to find a pair in red or burgundy, but function outweighs form when it comes to true winter wear, so I'll take what I can get.

Winter accessories live in the entryway, not in the closet, so I pretty much just decide which ones to wear spur-of-the-moment, based on how cold it is when I leave the house.

I have separate complements of hats and scarves for my puffers and my other coats. For my puffers, I wear touque type hats with a pom pom (I don't know what you call them) and I have wool scarves. Nothing exactly matches but they go together. For my other coats, I have a selection of hats but I don't know their proper names.
My favourite hat is corduroy. I wear it with my peacoat.
For gloves, I stick to ones that work for holding a dog leash. Usually brown.

This is fascinating...it seems like any plan will work, so long as I stick with it. I can also see how it helps if I'd been more thoughtful about my coat purchases over the years. There is zero chance I'm buying a new coat, so I may be headed toward a few new accessories to for various combinations.

Minimalist - I wish I didn't know what you were talking about. Half the time the mittens I'd wear with a particular coat are stuffed into my Carharts jacket and stuck all over with hay. Or worse.

Lisa - teal leather gloves sound amazing, good luck!

Gradfashionista and Sterling - I'd like to see photos of how you do the coat + wrap thing. I bought a lighterweight puffer last year and that sounds like a fun way to get more use out it.

I have coordinating scarfs/gloves for each coat (no hats). This is easier for me than some because I only own three jackets (navy, white, olive). I also own one giant cashmere wrap, similar to gradfashionista, that sadly gets little wear because it is cumbersome and fussy.

I was thinking about this the other day too - aknowledging that it might be in my best interests to put together some mini- "complements" (as Angie calls them" that are ready to go on any given day. I have a ridiculous amount of scarves and gloves, mitts and hats, and have started weeding out the stuff I never use. But it's all pretty carefully coordinated with my coat AND my outfit when I leave the house for the day. I am often in my coat for hours on end, and consider a scarf part of the outfit. A little less so with gloves, but I do think it makes us look far more pulled together when everything is carefully considered. I am on the lookout for navy or ink or a dark teal leather glove right now...

Matchy-matchy tendencies to the extreme, here, but at some point I dialed it back to matching hat and scarf in accent color, and matching gloves to coat. Gloves then stay with the coat; hat and scarf together on their designated wall hooks.

That was for conservative work-wear, though. For casual wear, hat and scarf roughly coordinate, and get worn until one needs cleaning or function requires a change-up. Sometimes I wear merino wristlets or armwarmers that stay on after I've removed jacket; then the question is whether to keep matching scarf on as well.

For outdoor practical tasks, I just need to be sure I can always immediately find the right pieces. So I'd be more concerned with the functional aspects of the jumble than with the esthetics. If it's 4 A.M., a storm is coming, and siding just blew off a feed shed, does it matter if work-gloves match parka, or whether hat color clashes, as long as one's head is warm?

I stick to cool colours, so most of the items I own look OK together. Most of my coats and jackets are in neutral colours, which are an easy basis for my colourful selection of gloves, hats and neckwear. (I DO have some neutral accessories, too, but I like to wear at least one non-neutral in each outfit.) I usually dress in two or three main colours, so my accessories will not necessarily match (and that's no goal for me), but hopefully, they will look good together.

Today, I wore a black coat with a knitted grey scarf and pink suede gloves. If I had felt the need for a hat, I would have chosen one of my knitted berets, either the pink one or the grey one. (In case you wonder about the rest of the outfit: I wore grey jeans, a pink tee, grey & taupe leopard booties, pink frames, a thin long jacket in grey & taupe & offwhite leopard print, and a silver grey tote.)

I have been thinking a lot about this too. I usually further to pay attention and end up running out with a gorgeous coat and then mismatched hat and gloves. I hate that. This winter I am going to try to put together hat, glove and scarf combos for each of my coats.

I have a huge cashmere wrap that I wear with everything. It was expensive, and I wasn’t going to splurge on more than one. It’s pale pink and has coordinated with black, purple, and navy coats. My gloves are black, though I think white might be a nice change.

How do you approach coordinating your gloves/hats/scarves with your coats? Does each coat have its own set? Do you match the accessories to your outfits and move them between coats? Do you grab whatever's weather/activity appropriate and then worry (or not) about whether it works with the coat?

My selection of gloves, mittens and hats is a jumble and I think I want to pay attention to this detail, but I don't have a plan.
