Bella, I'm a little late to the party but I just wanted to say that your sister is gorgeous and looks amazing. She is indeed super stylish and carries off this look with such finesse. Thank you so much for the informative post - I love to travel and hope that I can one day make it to Istanbul to see the street style in person!

I liked what you wrote about current trends being embraced there "especially if they incorporate our ethnic tastes in some new and original ways, like the harem pants or the gladiator sandals." Very chic.

Wooohooo! Yay, bella! I’m pleased you posted about Istanbul! Thank you. Love what your sister is wearing! Love YLF’s global edge!

It’s AMAZING how different looks work in different parts of the world. I know that Turkey is split into two distinct regions: the east and the west and that it's absolutely beautiful. I hear you! What a culturally rich and diverse country. Just like in Israel, harem pants work! I can’t believe I was narrow minded about them in the beginning. (Very naughty Angie. *big fat spank*). But I do prefer the ones that aren’t so saggy in the crotch. Your sister wears them to perfection.

Now ladies, add the sandal booties and you’ve got a hot middle Eastern look.

No worries Marianne, I love to talk about literature. Another talented contemporary writer from Turkey is Elif Safak. "The bastard of Istanbul" is a really good read. "The Saint of Incipient Insanities" is another book of hers that I really enjoyed, particularly because it spoke to my own experience as a graduate student in the US.

Thanks Bella! I really liked "My Name is Red", it's beautifully written and I really enjoyed the themes and his thoughts on art. I've read quite a bit on the history of the region, and it's interesting how he incorporates it. The writing must be incredible in the original language. I also liked his "Black Book". Sorry for OT, I was just curious what his compatriots think.

Thank you all so much, I will make my sister read this thread, I'm sure she will be happy.

San - My sister lives in Istanbul with her family. She came to the US on a business trip and we got to catch up.

Debora - I don't get to travel back as much as I would like. Usually once or twice a year.

Marianne- Pamuk is a really talented writer. My favorite book of his is "My name is Red." I would strongly recommend it if you are into historical fiction, especially the superbly written kind.

Cricket - I think I understand what you mean. I just want to make sure that I didn't give the wrong impression. Women in Istanbul don't usually wear harem pants. On the contrary, they are very modern-looking and contemporary. They wear all kinds of skirts, dresses, pants and jeans, especially the skinny kind. They just follow fashion trends closely and take special joy in embracing those trends that speak to their aesthetic sensibilities, such as the harem pants.
For my part, I was skeptical of harem pants as well until I saw how chic, comfy and current they can be. I still think that you can't really wear them everywhere. The context is very important. A cosmopolitan city like New York, London or Istanbul would be the ideal place to wear them.

Hanna - feel free to keep posting on this thread or start a new one, whichever you prefer.

My husband had the opportunity to travel to Turkey once and he came back with the most beautiful gifts for us...gold pendants, a gorgeous leather purse, a brass vase, and beautiful brass animal figurines for the children. I so wish I had been able to go along. He said the country was beautiful. Do you get to travel back often?

I really liked Hanna's global challenge. I was actually thinking of option, c, the city that you grew up in but don't live in anymore. I was born, grew up and lived in Istanbul until I came to the US after graduating from college. I still think it is the most beautiful city in the world, incorporating the best of the west and the east.

You would see a mix of styles in Istanbul. Some women adhere to the religious dress code. Others, who embrace a modern dress code, are very chic and put-together. Women are always impeccably groomed, with nails and hair usually professionally done (even in the summer!) and brows perfectly shaped. The dress code is usually modest, so you don't see mini skirts and shorts or cleavage very often but women still look very attractive. They usually accessorize very well; silver and gold jewelry as well as jewelry with gorgeous natural stones are abound. We follow European fashion very closely. As far as new trends go, women are not afraid to try them, especially if they incorporate our ethnic tastes in some new and original ways, like the harem pants or the gladiator sandals.
As I was planning on creating an outfit that reflected the essence of Istanbul street wear, I met with my sister, who happened to be wearing this gorgeous outfit and I couldn't help but take a picture for you.

So meet my sister H.:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/2.....otostream/

She is wearing harem pants, sandals, a cascading cardigan from Zara. She accessorized it with a large suede belt, a pearl necklace mixed with some costume jewelry in earth tones, pearl earrings and a bracelet in coordinating materials. She is also wearing sunglasses, which she took off for the photo.

What do you think of Istanbul street wear?
