I have to agree with Jonesy - this just seems like them CYAing rather than actually regretting what they did. I respect Glamour's investigative journalism because they seem to be the only women's fashion magazine still writing pieces about, say, genital mutilation in Africa, but their fashion stuff has not hit a chord for me for years.

It's a slippery slope, though, isn't it - we don't want to ban all criticism, or disagreement about what is stylish or fashionable. I do see that there's a power differential when a 'regular person' has their picture posted in a magazine for hundreds of thousands to see, as opposed to celebrities panned on the internet and in talk shows, who kinda know what they're in for, a bit.

Thank you for the update Angie. This is a step in the right direction athough as other have said more needs to bedone starting with a fundamental philosophy change.

Living in this generation of 'reality tv' and 'reality magazines' and how much people seem to enjoy seeing others in a negative light/ portrayed as such due to editing really makes me sad as to where we are going as a society in general.

To me the irony of the whole glamour issue is that with your long neck, long legs and lithe figure you are exactly the kind of model a Vogue would put in jodhphurs perhaps leaning against a wall with an incredibly talented photographer taking pics in the most perfect of light and from the perfect angles. And then it would be regarded as photojournalistic perfection. ( not that you are anything less than awesome in the pics Greg took of you and posted on the YLF article but I'm just trying to make the point of how ideal I think you/your body is for such a look).

Anyway, I am feeling less blah now because I have to say since I read the Glamour article it had really affected my mood deeply and personally.

I truly think " We look fab" on here and it is all thanks to to the constructive, cohesive, collaborative place you have created here Angie. Yo make this feel like home.

It seems that they should also explain how they came to aquire and use that photo. I continue to be concerned about seeing more of this sort of article for the sake of women struggling with their bodies and their style.

crossposted on the blog: i wrote to Glamour's PR department yesterday via e-mail. I'm happy to hear that Glamour has taken notice of the feedback and removed the photo. However, it appears many of us are on the same wavelength. From my letter to Glamour:

"It's one thing to poke fun at a grown woman, with a long-term stable marriage, successful business, and many supportive friends (on and off line). It's still sleazy and makes your publication look like it has nothing to say, but the target of your nastiness will rebound. But what about the other ladies Glamour magazine chooses to ridicule? What if one of them has just experienced a bereavement or been laid off? There is enough nastiness in this world without people going out of their way to generate more. Additionally, any fashion or style advice (the ostensible purpose of your publication) is noticeably lacking in these type of 'articles'."

I say let our eyeballs and our dollars do the talking! But let's not forget the power of taking the time to let these publications know what we think of them, both when they publish 'gar-bahhj' like this and also when they publish interesting, positive, thoughtful and inspiring pieces. steph

The thing is, Glamour has been doing this type of 'piece' for decades. Back when i was in highschool (1970's, long before the internet) this mag would have "Do's and Don'ts" featuring shots of women on the street with a black bar over their eyes (to hide their shame, i suppose). The editors would dissect the victims' outfits for fashion faux pas. i seriously doubt they will stop doing these pieces as they probably think that its a 'classic'.

Hopefully this brouhaha will give them something to chew on. And i doubt that they would have received this type of feedback if they hadn't inadvertently photographed a prominent style person (the fact that these 'style mavens' were unaware that they were targeting a a major style blogger makes them look like out of touch numbskulls, on top of it).

So while i cringe at the thought of Angie being put in this position, it's difficult to imagine another person being able to catch Glamour's attention and use this situation to push the online style culture in a positive direction.

It's the power of Team Polish!!!! steph

I agree. I'm still bitter. I don't think Glamour gets it at all. Publishing pics without permission, comments without accountability (faceless "Hans"), and what's basically random Mean Girl hazing in print. They need to retract the whole kit and kaboodle.

Wonderful. I'm glad our emails to Glamour helped. It is a sad state of affairs thought to see all the mean spirtedness on the internet. It's been really scary to post things on the blogosphere when I see how some authors get responded to in the comments. Thank you Angie for creating a forum that's so unlike the rest out there. And I hope people see you as the leader in this century who always took the high ground when it's so easy to take pot shots hidden behind an IP address.

Wonderful news Angie. I just hope that Glamour got a glimpse of how positive, empowering and fun fashion can be. As proven here at YLF, and under your wonderful leadership, fashion does not have to be a snarky, insecure and unkind enviroment. Who knows if this will have any long term effect but hey it just takes one person to take a step in the right direction to the ball rolling.

Although I think that's commendable of Glamour to reach out to you and correct their wrongs, I still think that trend of the article in general... capturing photos of female passers-by on the street and (in your case) posting pictures without asking for permission, *then* asking random male readers to make judgments about the subject's personality, and encouraging female readers to dress accordingly... I don't know, the whole idea just is a turn-off.

I really do think a lot of fashion-oriented magazines are getting more catty and mean-spirited and heartless, and I also don't find them particularly educational.

Also, the experience has made me think twice about even casually browsing through some of the websites that capture comical photos of fashion "mishaps", both those of celebrities or of everyday people - and I'll admit that I've browsed sites like that and chuckled from time to time. Although I'd certainly not make, let alone write down, a nasty comment about the character of the person who was photographed, many readers do make comments like that and I was probably more apathetic towards the mean-spiritedness surrounding those sites than I should have been. I think that it's very easy for us when we're looking at photos of people that we don't know, especially on the internet, to think of the subject as "fictional" or distanced from ourselves, and I think some people take that apathy and insensitivity to cruel extremes. The whole concept just makes me cringe.

Angie, I'm sorry they were so mean-spirited and hurtful. Kudos to you for being so graceful about the whole situation. I'm so glad they took the picture down. Still, they could learn a lot from you about style, how to give advice and being a positive role model, instead of resorting to insults and tearing other people down in the name of entertainment.

Thanks for updating us, Angie, and I certainly hope this gives the editors of the magazine pause for thought.

I can't tell you how happy I am to see that your picture is no longer associated with that piece of negative journalism. Angie, you set the bar for integrity and grace, and I can only hope that Glamour Magazine will come to realize how demeaning and hurtful these types of articles are to women, their intended audience. Glamour Magazine could learn a valuable lesson in respect and dignity from your blog, Angie. You have been a role model to all of us throughout this ordeal.

Well, it's a nice gesture on their part in trying to rectify an obvious blunder. Sadly, I don't think it will make Glamour re-think their approach to fashion nor to their publication in general.
