I was there when I was a girl, many years ago. It was beautiful and also quite cold - we were camping. This was in August. No specific advice except be prepared for chilly weather especially at night.

I went there years ago in September. Bring warm clothing. It gets very chilly as soon as the sun goes down. We camped in the middle of the mountains which meant the sun only shone on us for about 5 hours a day. The rest of the time we were in the shadow of the mountain. It is soooo beautiful. I'd love to go back. What I remember as highlights is Flathead (?) lake which is spectacular to look at. Also the Road to the Sun. Get out and walk the trail at the summit if you can. When we were there there were "wild" mountain goats all over.

I grew up in Montana and absolutely love Glacier. You will not go wrong with any of the advice here. I'm not a camper so my vey best recommendation would be to stay in beautiful Whitefish- charming town with a lake, trails, great food!

unfrumped, I was under the impression that you just needed to get a reservation if you're going to camp on site, which we're not. There's a $30 7-day entrance fee but you can pay that on-site. We did just book our housing, but we aren't staying inside the park (that's almost impossible to get now, and definitely not for August). Your best bet might be to find an AirBnB in Kalispell or Whitefish and drive in--the only thing is that might limit you to parts of the park since it's huge.

I'm so, so, so insanely jealous right now. I had a long planned trip this September to Glacier. I wanted to see the glaciers before they're gone. Just last week my spine doctor put the kibosh on it. I'm pretty upset by the news, as I haven't had a proper vacation in probably two years.
Anyways we planned to do this
http://glacierparkboats.com/grinnell-glacier-hike/

I hope I can go next year.

OH how wonderful! We lived very close to there (about an hour from the park) for a couple years, it is even more beautiful than you can imagine. if you ever get away from heavily populated areas, bring bear spray. I agree with others - Going to the Sun and Lake MacDonald. There is also a spot that you can stop and hike on the way up to Going to the Sun that was my very favorite spot - I would gladly have stayed for days. I need to find the name of it. You pull off the road and take trails over to a hidden waterfall. I think that only Heaven could be prettier...

Hey, Glacier/Waterton and I go back for decades since I grew up close to that area. Beautiful, rugged scenery--and the best part, in my opinion, is it hasn't suffered the "gentrification" of so many wilderness areas. Tourist services in both parks veer more toward the quaint/rustic than high-style/luxury-wilderness establishments in the commonly visited parks. As a matter of fact, if you aren't enamoured of backcountry camping and prefer more modern $$$ accommodations, with wifi and better dining options, I'd suggest staying in the mountain ski towns of Kalispell or Whitefish just outside Glacier and going into the park for day hiking options.

If you prefer to hike and camp in the backcountry, though, you'll be in wilderness Nirvana. You've got some good suggestions above, but remember the park is huge so I'd second Rabbit's suggestion to plan where you want to go in advance.

Going to the Sun road is beautiful if you time it right to avoid the lineup of oversized rec vehicles and nervous drivers. I'd suggest going very early in the morning and stopping at the top of the continental divide to hike around for the day. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the views, then head down late day/early evening once the traffic dies down. There are a couple of nice day loops that we used to do when our kids were young and weren't up to overnight backpacking trips.

Another favourite hike was from the Canadian side--Waterton. From June until October both sides of the international park are connected by a small border crossing at Chief Mountain. It's a scenic drive and the border personnel are often quite chatty and friendly. Waterton is a very small, quaint park town that looks much the same as it did fifty years ago. There are camping facilities there as well as accommodations and eating places, and several good hikes that use the town as a trailhead. One of our favourite day hikes was to hike the Waterton Lakeside trail to the American end, Ghost Haunt and then return to Waterton by boat. The Lakeside hike takes about 4 hours, with a scenic spot to have a picnic lunch at the international boundary marker half-way down the lake. If you are up to it, you can do some interesting short loops from the American Ranger station at the Haunt before catching a return boat at 5pm. The boat ride back takes under an hour and is the perfect place to rest and take some more glorious scenery.
http://www.watertoncruise.com/index.php

The link also contains information about the Crypt Lake hike, another one of our favorites.

There is a good reason why Glacier/Waterton is on so many hikers' bucket list. I was lucky enough to spend decades hiking and exploring in the area and always found something new and breathtaking to see. You'll have a wonderful time!

I love Glacier, I've been there three times but not for several years. There is a train service that runs right to an entrance of the park and we've always wanted to take the train down and stay in a lodge in the winter. Like any national park hiking and backpacking, especially in the backcountry can be one of the best ways to experience wilderness, the popular car campgrounds, lodges, and scenic roads can be crowded. In particular I remember the Going to the Sun road as creeping along in a line of cars behind Winnebagos, so probably good to check on the best hours and days to do that if you want to.

There are several great hikes like JAileen mentions, I'd probably pick out the ones I was most interested ahead of time because it can take quite a lot of time to get to different areas in the park and it's good to plan where you are going to stay strategically to be near the hikes. Also one of the hikes requires getting a ferry across the lake. Also the wildflowers can be incredible depending when and where you go so that's fun to plan around too.

The Canadian side of Glacier has a Ye Olde Tourism town feeling driving in, and the hikes, the backcountry and remote roads are also amazing if I remember.

I remember running into an ermine, mountain goats, many ground squirrels and jays hiking, and a black bear (saw from a car), but the main thing that makes the Glacier region different from anywhere else in the lower 48 is grizzly bears. Una can probably give good advice on this. Hiking and camping in grizzly country can be quite more involved than the usual wilderness precautions and I found it worthwhile to get a little book about it, and carry bear spray. Main things I remember where to make noise hiking -- singing, clapping, etc. Groups of four or more hiking tend to also have much less chance of bear encounters. Secure anything smelly to a bear (not only food but containers, clothes worn cooking, toiletries, soaps, lotions, etc. in bear bins or hung away from camp at the right height. Also don't sleep in or have in the tent toiletries or clothes you cooked in (change to sleep and wash off before sleeping). Unfortunately in campgrounds you can do everything right and the person next to you can be cooking fish straight on the fire and not cleaning up their trash, so that was another benefit of camping in less crowded areas there for me.

Man now I want to go too :)

Believe it or not, I have been there. In September no less. See photo below from September 2004.

Camping is not my thing, but I figured, how bad could it be with a cute former marine? Hmmpf! Turns out the big, bad marine would have frozen to death one night in a massive freezing rain/sleet/hail/snow storm had I not been there to crawl out of the tent in the middle of this to properly attach the weather cover that had blown off because he just tossed it on the top.

It was beautiful though. We spent about 5 or 6 days hiking and camping, and then drove over the border and stayed in a nice little Canadian inn with the most magnificent view of lake and mountains. Sorry I can't remember the name of it.

If you are a hiker/camper, these are either common sense or laughable;-)
If I were to do it again, I would be certain to do these things:

trim the toenails as much as possible! The nail on my right big toe slid into the front of my boot every time we went downhill. I lost that nail, and it took well over a year to regrow. Ick.

take a bear noisemaker of some sort. The bears are real, and apparently they're drinkers. They desperately wanted our empty wine bottle one night.

When you can, stay at a campsite with showers. And ALWAYS get more than one shower token. Nothing like having a full head of shampoo and your allotted time runs out.

I'm sure there's more, but I'm equally sure I've blocked some of it. I can almost hear Una laughing...

I worked there 3 summers in college. Lake McDonald Lodge is gorgeous. If you can't stay there at least visit it. When I worked there the food was bad, but I went a few years ago and it was actually pretty good in the dining room. It has the best architecture combined with setting, right on the lake. Glacier Park Lodge is lovely but is outside the park. Many Glacier has a gorgeous setting but the lodge itself is very funky looking - faux Swiss Alpine. The lodge in Canada, the Prince of Wales, is beautiful with a beautiful setting. The lodges close up sometime in September so check the dates. Akso, you might get snow, so bring warm clothes. That's one of the reasons they close.

Hiking: the Highline Trail, starting at the summit, is gives the biggest bang for the buck. Fabulous views, with very little effort, although it is 11 miles, I think. Also the hike to Iceberg Lake is very good. It starts out of the Many Glacier area. There are lots of good hikes, but these two are among the best IMO.
