I also completely agree with Maya. if you know something doesn't work for you, I think it is perfectly fine to avoid it. For example, I might give a lot of things a try, but you will never ever catch me in anything with a drop-waist, I would look like a duck.

I only have bootcuts and I only have one pair of jeans (shock horror I can hear the gasps from my living room!)

Why - I haven't been able to find skinny jeans that I can get over my calves and I haven't found straight legs that are high enough in the rise. I am still searching for both.

BUT - my bootcuts fit, look good and I am happy whenever I wear them (mostly in the weekend) and they will have to do until I find the right straight legs or the right skinny jeans (and have calf lipo suction).

OOoops sorry Agrace, I posted in the wrong thread! Sometimes what is fashionable is not what suits us best. I would rather wear something which flatters and risk looking outdated than feeling odd in an on trend piece.

I’m back in my boot cuts today too and feel fab! I'm also wearing my new shortened cream Oxfords with them which makes me feel extra fab.

But such superb advice from everyone (thanks for defining the YLF way perfectly, Maya). I can’t possibly add more value.

I'm still on the fence, but I am leaning toward that direction.
I have one pair of newly acquired skinnies that I like and wear only with tunics/dresses. I am comfortable wearing them this way- like a denim legging in essence. Mine have some whiskering on the thigh, so I wouldn't wear that pair as regular jeans anyway, but I don't know if I would feel comfortable wearing even a solid dark wash with just a top. I guess I won't know for sure unless I try it.

I think the fit of the jeans is lovely, I also like the colour but believe black to look smarter and be more versatile. Grey jeans, which I have previously owned always look like over laundered black jeans to my eye, probably because my grey jeans where actually faded black jeans!

If you are looking for an alternative, straight legs do seem like the obvious choice.

I have just recently purchased my first pair of skinnies so I am late to the party as well. I plan to wear them tucked into boots (would have done it last winter but didn't have boots or skinnies and now that I have shed more baby weight, I actually found skinnies that fit).

I am not sure if I am going to wear them sans boots though - I don't think they are for everyone and I think it accentuates my naturally ice-cream cone shape. After spending the 80's wearing bigger on top, smaller on bottom, I don't know how I feel about doing this again.

I love my bootcuts as well as wide-leg/flare jeans and I don't plan to give them up though I do feel a little "old-fashioned" wearing them when surrounded by a sea of skinnies.

I am 5'2" and find bootcuts are more flattering for me, but I usually like to wear a bit of a heel with them (although I think they're really cute with converse, too). And I have relatively long legs for my height. I like skinnies for tucking into boots, but I still haven't dared to wear them any other way yet.

I agree with Marianna! And also, to agrace's point, I think we've become accustomed to seeing skinnier jeans everywhere. That being said, I think the classic jean cuts are straight and bootleg -- those that the majority of women can pull off.

I like denim variety in my closet. I like bootcuts and I don't think they look outdated and I generally feel longer and slimmer in them. But I also like skinnies and straight legs. I think it's all about finding the right style/cut for your shape, and pairing the jeans with the right tops.

Fair enough - I guess I never thought of the height factor. What I meant though is that I like the variety of jean styles. I do agree about the skinny look being dominant, but I hope bootcuts will still be in style

Marianne, I can see why you like bootcuts. You have your height on your side! I don't really like them for myself because I just feel that anything with a defined knee break is disruptive to my leg line somehow.

Marianne - It's funny, I know that ultimately boot cuts are the most flattering for the majority of women but I guess I have been inundated with skinny jean images and now it feels strange to wear a wide leg or a boot cut even. It is a complete 180 degree turn though, in the past the silhouette I aimed for was fitted on top with boot cut, wide leg or trouser on bottom. Not it seems to be more voluminous on top with a fitted or streamlined bottom. Still figuring it out!

I do think a slim boot cut would also be great right now as a skinny alternative...hmmmm

You guys are funny - I actually feel quite good in my bootcuts - they make me look balanced and elegant :)
I do agree with Maya's points about straight legs. My "skinnies" actually have 13'' and 14'' openings, so they are technically straight legs. There are so many styles of skinnies that are very tapered around the knee, and I don't think that looks good on most people.

Maya, Thank you for such an astute answer - I do feel I have given them a fair try and I have one pair of super dark ink blue classic skinnies I picked up on mega clearance at Banana this summer that has a good scrunch and are not that tight so I feel pretty good in them. I think the grey pair I have in a picture posted earlier today and a black pair I picked up tonight will be going back. One pair will do it for me I think.

now....the hunt is on for a good pair of black STRAIGHT leg jeans....anyone seen any great ones lately?

I think the YLF way is that unless you absolutely hate something or feel it doesn't work with your personal style, you should give it an honest try...and if you don't love it, even after trying it, don't wear it. I like skinnies for specific purposes, but like you, I just can't wrap my head around wearing them as regular jeans. They feel and look too painted-on and just aren't flattering on most people. I much prefer straight legs. They are my go-to jeans. Like you, I'm also not into bootcuts as much as I used to be. I wore them the other day and felt really dumpy.

I have also found that with skinnies, one or two inches can make all the difference. My Rich and Skinny jeans have a 10" leg opening which is VERY tapered. I don't even like them with tunics. They are strictly for boot tucking. But an 11 or 12 inch leg opening with a little scrunch is fine without boots. So that might be worth considering too.

Seeing so many people on YLF look great in skinnies and reading a lot of skinny jeans posts might have unintentionally resulted in some people feeling a lot of pressure or feeling dated or dumpy for not embracing them, but you'll get basically the same result from straight legs.

I'm also feeling most comfortable in the straight jean style. I don't see other women in my age group wearing skinnies very often, but I still wear them confidently with tunic length tops. Boot cuts feel "wrong" to me also.

I really thought I liked skinny jeans on myself but now I am not so sure. My eye has become accustomed to a sleeker silhouette for jeans so boot cut feels *wrong* for me right now. So what would be a good alternative? I know the obvious answer is probably straight legs? I like skinny jeans in theory but on my hourglass build I feel they emphasize all the least flattering places.

Anyone else not adopted skinnies yet? I am a very recent convert to skinnies but after giving them a fair go-round I may be done!
