Thanks for the invaluable advice, ladies! Lyn, that definitely sounds like something my dad will do! Hmm I should go through his clothes when he's no around...

My dad is around the same age as your dad and I bought him a bunch of very soft cotton shirts from the Gap (no V-necks; he thinks those are for girls) and he really liked them, tried them on, and then put them away.

Every time I see him, he's back in his thread bare t-shirts and doing the same old same old.

I asked him why he wasn't wearing his new shirts, and he told me he doesn't like to wear them because his old ones are not worn out yet! So my mom threw his old ones all out! He was very mad but now will wear the new ones and likes them :p

So... yeah; don't forget to pitch the old and worn out stuff!!!

This is a wonderful gesture from you. I agree with ON, Gap, Harry Rosen and perhaps even some staples from Joe Fresh. I have bought a few things there such as shorts and tshirts for both my DH and DS and they have liked them. A great place for casual footwear is Softmoc and Geox. Have Fun!

My two sons consider it their duty to keep their 69 year-old dad looking current and fashionable. Under their direction, most of his smart casual wardrobe comes from stores like Brooks Brothers, J Crew, and Nordstrom's, along with a Canadian menswear store, Harry Rosen. He also likes Banana Republic for polo (golf?) and casual shirts.

Pre-retirement, my husband's casual wardrobe consisted of inexpensive T's, cargo shorts, baggy khakis/jeans, worn-out sneakers, and fleece jackets; spending more than $20-$30 on any of these items positively horrified him. But the sight of my husband wearing only these clothes day after day once he retired horrified the rest of us. That's when my sons staged their intervention.

Thanks to our sons, my husband's everyday wardrobe now consists of smart casual items like a buttery-soft leather jacket, a couple of cashmere sweaters, soft cotton shirts, and well-fitted jeans and pants. My husband has finally recognized that, for him, spending money on a fewer number
of quality items pays off because he'll happily wear these favorites over and over. But we still laugh at the memory of the horrified look on his face the first time he saw a $200 price tag on a pair of jeans--which, by the way, he actually bought and has become his absolute favorite thing to wear! ;)

You are such a sweety to do that. My HH loves Tommy Bahama and Polo brands. He finds them at Macys. I think they're a bit pricey but he wears his favorite bottoms daily for the entire season so cost per wear is nill. Quality is excellent. You might want to check out a Van Heusen outlet as well. Good quality, great prices and size selection but not sure how casual they run.

How nice! Definitely try Old Navy and the Gap. My husband is 55 and we find lots of nice casual clothing for him at ON, khakis, cargo shorts, what he calls golf shirts and I call polo shirts (short sleeved pullover knit with a collar and a 3-4 button placket). You can check out their websites to see if that's the kind of thing you're after. On second thought, this might not be "smart" casual though.

My dad is retiring this year (yay!), but putting away the dress shirts and suits have made me realize that my dad has a severe lack of good quality casual clothes. My dad is in his early 60s, but has a full head of black hair and can probably pass off as 50. He's pretty easygoing and is the kind of person who couldn't care less about what they wear. His casual clothing generally consists of old, threadbare t-shirts, athletic jackets, khakis, and running shoes. I love my dad to bits, but all 3 ladies of the family agree that it is time dad got a "makeover."

This summer was my first paid job/internship, and as I have been managing my finances wisely over the past year, I do have a good amount of "fun money" (plus I'm sure my sister and my mom would contribute). I want to buy a couple outfits (the whole deal: shirts, pants, shorts, shoes etc.) that can easily last him a long time. We're taking a trip to the States in August and will be visiting malls/outlet malls. As I have never shopped for men, could any of you enlighten me as to which stores to hit up, what to look out for, and what styles/outfits would be appropriate for someone like my dad? I'm currently looking for smart classics that will also be very comfortable. Thanks in advance!
