It's tricky. Just like you find past season items from Nordstrom at the Rack (or Saks / SaksOffFifth). As well as (increasingly), you will find made-for-discount merchandise by prestigious brands. Some of the items made for discount are quite good. Some are inferior.

The best way to determine, is to be very familiar with the brand and to know the merchandise from past seasons. The other sign is stock levels. A sweater in multiple colors, available in all sizes, usually means it was made for that channel.

I bought a skirt from them that was Free People. I had seen the skirt at Nordie's, but it was sold out in my size. A few months later, I found my size on Gilt.com. So I would agree that the merchandise is the real deal, just end-of-season or last season's stuff.

The retail price for the skirt at Gilt was the same as the retail at Nordie's, so the markdown is just because the stuff is past season. However, I suppose it's possible that Gilt might have some in-house brands, like the Rack or other outlet-type stores do, and in that case the retail price could be whatever they want it to be--they can just make the item look like it's on sale when the sale price is really what they wanted to charge for it in the first place.

I have bought some stuff from them in the past, and I agree that their items are not seconds, just stuff from previous season or older. Sort of like things on bluefly.com.

I think(?) it is usually end of season or past season stuff. I don't think I have ever seen anything current (ie currently available in store) on gilt but it can be pretty recent eg I have seen FP stuff for sale that was for sale in retail stores a few months before. I assume the pre markdown price is the RRP. I have had no quality issues - I don't think it is a seconds and samples type place. But I have no idea where they get the stuff!

I'm curious, does anyone know where Gilt gets their merchandise? Is is current season or past season markdowns? Alternative quality? What is the basis for the supposed higher prices that are replaced by the Gilt price?

I see some White & Warren cashmere items that appeal, but I'm wondering if they'll be as nice as the full price pieces I've seen at a local boutique.
