Aha! With the inspiration from y’all, I’ve realized that the fabric we just cut from our curtains is just right for Christmas presents, and might even make decent napkins to line our bread basket. So colors for Christmas wrapping this year (yes, I’m a nerd & plan this in advance) will be white, silver and either deep blue or Tannenbaum green.

My family makes cloth gift bags from old fabric. We reuse the bags over and over. It's really simple; just hem the edges of a rectangle of cloth and fold it in half and sew up the unfolded side and the bottom. Then sew on a ribbon or piece of yarn, or not even sew it on- just tie it with something you can reuse. We are reusing some bags from over 40 years ago now!

I do a mix - I have stopped buying ribbons and wrapping paper but I am still working through older supplies (mine from about 8-10 years ago and I have inherited my Mum's as well).

I make cards/tags from old patterns sometimes or from old gift cards.

These look very pretty.

Pretty! Love the flower paper :)
We just reuse gift bags over and over-its become a bit of a joke at this point! Our family is very minimal with gifts though.
The nicest "gift wrap" was a gift from DHs aunt. She wrapped the gift in a pashmina!

Rebekahphoto & Joy, those are some great ideas! The place where I got the Bburg gate tote bag seen here has others, all for 2 or 3 euros, so I’ll be back for more. I had not thought of flea markets as a place for gift wrap, but why not? My sister included tea towels as part of a gift to me, probably because she felt she hadn’t spent enough $$, but the idea of using them as wrap is great.

Ann, thanks for the heads-up!

Another box-and-paper reuser here. The running Christmas joke in the family is that the reused Macy's boxes are most likely to hold the underwear and socks.

I'm less likely to reuse when gifting outside the family. In those cases I'm more likely to try to incorporate something for the present into the wrap. Using baby blankets instead of paper, or dishtowels, or anything that can be secured with ribbon or twine.

I think your package look great! I like to reuse papers, as well as kraft paper with interesting string/ribbons. I also repurpose fabric--silk scarfs work great, as well as tea towels. I find them super inexpensive at the flea markets, etc

on our last trip to denmark I found great tote bags for super cheap-like $2 at a bookstore. They are fun as gift wrap since the text is graphic and in a different language

I have started using shopping tote bags as wrap in hopes that they will be used instead of plastic. I also use pretty dish towels for wrap or those fabric “boxes” from the dollar store. For ribbon I buy net fabric and cut it in strips to make ribbon and s pretty bow. It does not show wrinkles and can easily be reused. Sometimes the dollar store like section of Target has fabric bags in florals or kid friendly designs or a dollar and they can be reused lots of ways..

I like your creativity here!
I am also from a family background of wrapping paper reusers. I like it when we get something given to us in a gift bag, as that's so easy to reuse.

Just a word of caution. Is that address on the last parcel readable? It almost is on my phone, and maybe is on a larger screen.

Ow, you guys are killing me! I have always been a paper saver—you wouldn’t believe how hard it was to give that up when we moved overseas! And a bit of my stash is still in storage back there.

My mom was a paper saver—there were a couple boxes of paper to be reused in the cupboard. Favorite pieces were used over and over. We recognized them, and saw more love in them every time they were used. “The Velveteen Wrapping Paper”? I still remember when my BiL laughed about us telling him to save the paper when he was opening a present. I couldn’t figure out what one did otherwise. Then he dropped the bomb on me that it is freely available for purchase, not terribly expensive, and some people buy new every year. Wha—? That sounded like crazy talk.

My first instinct here was to let myself buy what I saw that appealed to me (those individual sheets <3 <3 ). But then I decided that it was a kind of wastefulness not in line with my general approach, so I could/should figure out how to operate and make presents without wrapping paper. My fingers still itch to make those corners and tie ribbons! I am saving what other people send us, and it will be redeployed.

Rachylou, I’d love to see some of those creations!

We reuse and reuse and reuse paper. I would buy paper from the neighborhood school kids’ fundraisers, and then would get it back from my mother, my brother, etc. Recently I bought some red kraft paper and twine for a different aesthetic.

Ok. My whole extended fam is intense about this. Everyone has an artistic streak. They reuse wrapping paper. Use old paper of all forms - junk mail to newspaper - esp things with amusing pictures or words. My brother and cousins draw on the reused paper. I use cloth ribbons (then everyone gives them back to me) and make bows with scrap paper and stamp and origami decorations are nice.

Time consuming.

I just sent home a box, catching up on birthdays so far this year. I think I get a B for aesthetics, C for environmental sustainability. Can you help me move to the head of the class?

Aesthetically, I had a color scheme—gold/cardboard, black and pink—but it somehow never came together to have any oomph, so I get marked down there.. One thing I probably should have done differently is the way the lining paper is folded. Those flowers go to the horizon, getting smaller as they approach it. The way it’s folded, the flowers are big and then boom! It’s sky time. I probably either should’ve folded the sky back or folded it so the big flowers were unseen. Instead, i went with the standard tuck in the middle. Ten points off. Also, the layout isn’t great, because only the brown, not the design, of the biggest bag, and you can’t see the whole quote on the medium-sized one.

Environmentally speaking, I minimized the wrapping, but only did a soso job on avoiding new materials. The box itself and the packing peanuts are reused, but the liner paper is new. I had wanted to use newspaper, but waited too long to select the pages, because I hadn’t realized how much color there would be on most newspaper pages. That spoiled the effect. The tissue paper was provided free at a home building supply store, to wrap breakable purchases. I used some for my flowerpots & then brought extra because I like it. This is the “extra”. It’s never been used before—economical for me, but doesn’t cut down on resource use.

Two “gift” bags are the ones stores gave me for my purchase; the other was bought at World Market a couple years ago and is on its 2nd or 3rd use. The black fabric tote bag with the Berlin stencil was 2€, so I only spent a little and I scored points for sustainability, badaboom. But the final gift is probably the most environmentally packed; it’s a T-shirt rolled up so you can’t see what it is, tied with a ribbon that’s been used before. The only gift bag that contains packaging material is the white one; it has sort of foam paper that I saved from a package, being used around around the steel hooks.

But those tags. They are one-time use items, and came with packaging of their own. Big point loss there. But what else works? At Christmas I can reuse cards. Maybe I should’ve made these myself, given how simple they are.

How about you? How sustainable is your gift wrap? Can you suggest ways for me to do better?
