When my son was younger, Lego was becoming stupidly gendered, with strange superheros and space thingies for boys, and pastel-colored “friends” with figurines skinnier than normal Lego people for girls. Yuck. At that age my son was really interested in Power Rangers and Pokemon, whilst my nephew loved Star Wars and Lego. I always appreciate people running things past me for my son, as I don't like them wasting their money. At his 5th birthday, mine was reading easily (not chapter books yet—got The Wind in the Willows for his 6th &amp; read it all immediately, also learned German &amp; read chapter books in it that year) but he didn’t know to put bodies on his drawings of people—their legs came straight from their heads. His art skills have never kept up with his language abilities. Lego and IKEA instructions &amp; assembly were a breeze, indicating good fine motor control, but his handwriting has always been beyond dismal. When he was 4 &amp; 5, he knew all about astronomy &amp; a bit of geology, and wanted to read more. Popular toys are magformers (magnets that connect), lego, dominoes, brio builder and &nbsp;k'nex. The boys also enjoy discussing anything marvel super hero related (Hulk, Ironman). They enjoy non-fiction books about dinosaurs and creatures that are unusual (i.e.deep sea life). The Magic Treehouse is a popular beginning chapter book series that take Jack and Annie on adventures back in time.
