Oh, I really like Joy's advice. Before I started buying things, I already had a general idea of what stuff looked bad on me and what looked good on me. There were several types of items that had yet to be tested, but at least I was able to exclude right off the bat silhouettes (like A-line skirts) that made me look dumpy. That saved a lot of time.

Hello!

The way I got started was by buying things at cheaper stores, like Old Navy. Then I went on to midpriced stores that often have good sales, like Banana Republic and Gap, and I would wait for a sale to buy what I wanted (it was usually still available, since the sales are frequent). I just bought whatever appealed to me, even if it was something that I'd never worn before. I did a lot of online shopping, which helped me develop my style simply because I was viewing a lot of different kinds of clothing and could see what I was attracted to. (In your case, you could browse online but not order anything if you want to buy secondhand.)

I wasn't able to go to thrift stores, because I have a hard-to-find size that is not normally available in such stores, but in hindsight I am actually glad that that option was out of the equation for me. The problem with thrift stores is that they're often full of outdated things, and because there is less to pick from, sometimes you pick only what's the best of what's there rather than what you would really want if you had a better selection. Perhaps a better alternative, if it's available, would be a consignment store, because the stuff there is usually more up-to-date.

Of course, the nice thing about thrift stores is it costs very little to try out a new silhouette; however, the danger is that since there aren't different sizes of a particular item of clothing available, you might buy a size that doesn't quite fit right and then conclude that you don't like the silhouette instead of realizing that it was a fit issue.

Welcome, Gail. It is a journey that can be lots of fun. You might start by identifying by our shape, including secondary characteristics ( for example, I am basically a rectangle without curves, but also need to consider my strong shoulder line and apple tendencies, and petite structure that easily gets overwhelmed. Angie has great blog posts in the archives to help you.
Also think about what you dislike on yourself to eliminate those details. Good luck and we are here to help. Just ask your questions here.

I'm still working on it, but this board has helped me more than anything. Particularly seeing pictures posted. I could see what I liked on others and begin to think whether I liked it just on them, whether I thought maybe I could wear it, and whether I wanted to just ask them to give it me I liked it so much.

Once I found members whose style I admired I could follow them really closely and learn. It is an ongoing process, but nothing has helped me more than this diverse and kind group of women.

Hi, Gail!

I think I "found" my fashion sense first through looking at interior decor for inspiration when I was in a temporary living situation and couldn't decorate everything the way I wanted just yet. I kept seeing bright turquoises and peacock blues, coral, chartreuse, mustard, cobalt, aubergine/eggplant; polka dot and paisley prints. Those colors and patterns made me happy when I see them, and I started thinking about incorporating them more in my clothing. I explored lots of blogs, YouLookFab being one that is still around today, that provided inspiration photos and articles with ideas about new colors, or mixing colors together. Now, I use Pinterest a lot to collect my inspirations, ideas, or simply images that make me happy.

More recently, I've started assessing comfort and fit with more scrutiny than I had in past years. If a material is stiff or scratchy, or has a seam in the wrong place, it drives me nuts to wear it. I've found that some garments that some might think "dressy" - like a pencil skirt or a dress - can be as comfortable as yoga pants if they are in the right material and fit perfectly.

Angie has some great posts on getting started exploring & identifying your personal style. I'm a very verbal person, so nailing down words to describe how I aspired to appear helped me get a handle on whether the clothes I was selecting would help cement that image. This could be a good resource to start with:
http://youlookfab.com/2012/01/.....e-persona/

Welcome Gail I'd read back over Angie's posts if I were you:

http://youlookfab.com/category.....-planning/

these are the wardrobe planning ones.

Do you know what styles you like to wear? If you don't maybe you can think back to outfits that made you feel really great or outfits you've seen on others that you would love to try.

Do you use Pinterest? It can be a way to organize your fashion inspirations.

You can look on here at WIW posts (what I wore) and find some members whose style you'd like to emulate.

You can also look at the blog for inspiration and see Angie's outfits as well.

I've never had much of a fashion sense, and the department store / designer prices always drove me away anyway, but thrift stores and liketwice.com beckon. So my question is: how would I go about developing a personal style? What kinds of criteria should I be using?

Thanks for any assistance.
