I don’t know if the brand Wolky has been mentioned? I have some pairs still going strong.

I think my most expensive wardrobe items are shoes and boots— have to keep the feet happy!

Just about Arche- they are French I think. They are expensive when imported here. I have only one pair which I bought in Noosa, Queensland, Australia on sale for $100. I call them my “walking sandals” as they replaced a similar pair I had owned for a few years that I loved which were so comfy but had got stained. They are beautifully cushioned but they rub a little on the top of a toe so not as good as the old ones which are now gone :(
Here they are.

DonnaF, I agree with never say never, although those SM sneakers look JUST LIKE the orthopedic sneakers a good friend of mine has worn for years...he's had major surgery on his back multiple times and can only wear that type of shoe.... so fashion is NOT a consideration plus his idea of fashion is a Rock n Roll Tshirt and Levis. Not for me LOL. But I salute you and Angie wearing them!

Fashintern, not only am I not opposed to being one year behind trends, I RELISH it. My overall style is classic, sometimes modern classic and sometimes timeless classic, where I focus on good fit more than trendy styles. Also, these days I can't name one trend off the top of my head that I like. Well, maybe some of the color combinations. Some of my clothes are many years behind the trends It's how I roll and it's the environmental norm in my world. And I'm with you on expecting shoes to last more than one season. They don't always do that but I always hope and try to buy with that in mind.

Deborah thanks and I'll have to look for Ziera and see if they are avail in the US.

La P - YES foot health impacts overall health! It's sooo important and you are smart to pay attention to it. Having some minor pain your foot can cause you to lean a certain way and next thing you know your knee is messed up....etc etc

Thanks Shevia..I've heard of M.Gemi but not Arche...

Anchie...I totally agree that shoes have to be comfortable right away or forget it. I actually do a three hour wear around the house as my guide. I had a pair of boots last year that were perfectly comfy for 2 hours at home but when I wore them for 3 hours in a mall and they really hurt, and it happened twice! So now I do a trial run of 3 hours before deciding.

I HAVE counted how many pairs I've returned. It runs about 10 to 1 consistently, and knowing that helps me not get frustrated

Chris, are you opposed to being 1 year behind trends? I'm not, because I expect footwear to last for years and years anyway. Lots of Think! shoes are currently half off, which brings them under $100.

I am having hard time this year finding comfortable shoe. I am refusing to compromise and don’t want to wait for shoes to become more comfortable with wear. If they are not comfortable immediately when I put them on, back they go. I lost count of how many pairs of shoes I returned this year.

My shoe comfort is very important to me. Arche was my first comfortable and stylish brand that I splurged on many years ago and I recently thrifted a pair of sandals that lived up to my memory. Also M.Gemi is worth looking at. I thrifted a pair of loafers last summer in New York and this summer splurged on a pair of platforms (to wear with my long jeans!) and they are both very, very comfortable.

I need to write a similar post at some point; I'm trying to be more focused on foot health as it impacts overall health. For me the best shoes have wide toe boxes, zero drop, and flexible soles so my feet can do their own thing. It really limits my options, both in terms of shopping and styling. But my feet, knees and back feel great!

I relate to footwear needs as I have had a nasty bout of PF this year and am wearing othotics most days. Two brands that have been great for me are Hush Puppies and my now go brand Ziera Shoes. I am in Australia and I am not sure how widely available they are. They are a bit $$ but so worth it. The inner soles can be removed and orthotics can be placed in the shoe. If you are not using orthotics, they are generally very comfortable and provide good support. They also offer a variety of styles.

To file under Never Say Never: I am not a big sneaker fan, but I just ordered these Steve Madden fashion sneaks that look like athletic shoes. They were 40% off, so I figured why not. Angie finds them super comfortable, but my feet are as wide as hers are narrow so I don't have high hopes. They are so crazy clunky that they tickle my funny bone. I really should be buying Brooks Addictions which I actually wear for exercise.

Nebraskim, yes barkingdogshoes.com is a great resource. I was looking there yesterday and found that a lot of the reviews of individual shoes were old and the shoes are no longer available. I'll still look some more. Wow, fat pads migrating to the wrong place, how annoying.

Roberta, thanks for the Kelsey Dagger info. I like a lot of their styles but did not think they looked very comfortable. I stand corrected! Born and Ecco work well for me too, Clarks sometimes, and Merrill is ALWAYS a good fit for me if I want a sporty style.

Thanks Fashintern. I've just never tried on a pair of Danskos that felt good. I do not care what others think of my shoes, but I (like most of us) do have my own views on what styles look good and which ones do not. Those views also change over time You are indeed lucky to be in the land of shoes made for lots of city walking. I had some Think! shoes many years ago that I had forgotten about...black leather sneakers with a pretty brocade/velvet fabric in the area of the laces. Found them in TJmaxx of all places. They are in the pricey group...which I'm going to consider.

Sal you (and Fashintern and Angie) have all said that it seems flat shoes are everywhere, including in cities. It's a GOOD thing!

I can’t offer recommendations for brands but I do agree with Fashintern that younger women are mostly wearing comfy shoes. Flat boots, sneakers, slides, flat sandals, flatforms. I think flats are the most modern!

I’ve had several pairs of Clark’s—they work well for me. Danskos are also good for my feet. It has been so long since I had Sketchers I don’t know if I should comment, but I liked them then. IIRC, they had spongey insoles, but not well thought-out support or padding in specific places, just basically put a sponge in there to cover everything. That was fine when I was 30. I haven’t worn my Borns much, but like them better now that I’ve added an insole. I like my Pikolinos. My Call it Spring loafers aren’t cushiony at all, but they are surprisingly comfortable, and have been from the start. And I love the Redwing boots I’ve had for a decade.
The brand I’ve tried in the last few years that really didn’t work was Sperry’s. Just too little cushioning or support.

As far as feeling self-conscious about “old lady shoes”, and feeling judged by people who think that way—that’s encrusted thinking of bygone years. Seriously, look at some 20-somethings. I bet they aren’t wearing heels. Women of a certain age wear the heels.

ETA. Gretchen mentioned Cole Haan. I’ve had a pair of 3” heels from them for years. Very comfortable.
I agree with the Walking Store rec, especially because you have them right there. Lucky for me, I’m now living in a place where I think every shoe store is for shoes for walking the distance. The shoes I’m lusting for now are Melvin & Hamilton and Think! I haven’t tried these yet, have enough heels already, but they are so cute. I’m telling myself that the platform makes up for the heel height. https://www.think-schuhe-onlin.....ette-drawi But that brand has lots of styles that might work for you.

I will throw out Kelsi Dagger Brooklyn, a brand which I find very well made and very comfortable AND interesting. A triple threat. I have bad knees and a tetchy back, so my shoes must have arch support, very low heels and a comfortable toe box for my wide-ish paws. I own eight pairs!

Born and Ecco are stalwarts for sneakers and boots, Clarks are hit or miss, and Naturalizer is a really good fit if I can find a style I like (not often). I have a pair of Earth gold loafers that I wear all the time, but in general I don't like their styles. Merrell and Cole Haan run too long and narrow for my foot.

The website barkingdogshoes.com has lots of great info on brands for fussy feet. I am a HUGE devotee of Danskos and find that their narrow width (not available in all styles) works best for me. In terms of running shoes, I waiver back and forth between Brooks and New Balance; I've been a Brooks person for years but now New Balance are working better. I have an untreatable condition where all the fat pads in the bottom of my feet have migrated up toward my toes, so not only do I constantly feel like my socks are completely bunched up under my toes, but the balls of my feet are unprotected. It's annoying.

Christina F yes I use Superfeet insoles in my running shoes and have put them into other shoes too. I should check out the different styles. I got a proper running shoe fitting for the first time ever two summers ago and they recommended them. The Walking Company has stores in the two malls I go to most...but they tend to be fairly small stores so limited selection, but it's a good idea!

Laura thanks for the info on Hotter. Haven't seen anything I liked enough to pay for returns but will keep looking. think they have free shipping but charge for returns if I remember correctly.

KikiG - good to know about PG and yep, Nordstrom Rack is a great alternative for the long game as you call it.

Hah Karen13, LOVE calling us team GRAF!!! (reminds me of tennis great Steffi Graf althouth I was never good enough at tennis to be on HER team LOL) Yeah the cushioning thing is so important. I mentioned earlier that I was properly fitted for running shoes two summers ago and they were Hoka One One's. That plus a superfeet insole. My feet are VERY happy on my daily walks, although it's a bit more sporty a style than I prefer for travel. It comes in a lot of colors. I should see what other styles they carry. I got my first pair at the running store and my second (and soon to be third) at Amazon. See find below. I also think someone here (maybe Angie) said that Fly Londons are great for lots of pavement walking.

Cindysmith...LOVE what you said....even through my feet are not exactly the same....
I have foot issues that require wide width shoes and lots of arch support. Shoe shopping is a PITA (pain in the arse) because I still want my shoes to be cute, you know? So many comfort shoes look too much like medical devices or something, which is... just nope. We may all get to needing "medical devices" at some point but do not want to rush it. Great brand list!

Hah Janet, shoes getting wider, and clothing (thankfully) including more larger sizes...it's those of us with narrow feet and short bodies that are getting left in the dust

Suntiger GREAT point about investing in shoes to avoid medical bills. That is quite literally true.

nuancedream thanks for another good list...I had to look up hallux rididus...sounds most uncomfortable.

Donna F, missed your second posting...more good ideas! love your frog kissing analogy...:-) I sure am glad that kissing frogs doesn't give you some nasty disease or I'd have it in droves. :-)

Belladogga missed your posting too... Born is a good idea. One of my two pairs of fashion sneakers is born and I wish I had sized up so I could add a cushioned insole but otherwise they are good.

I have hallux rigidus in both big toes, which makes finding comfortable and stylish footwear challenging to say the least with higher volume feet. I've had good luck with Dromedaris, Taos, FitFlop and L'amour Des Pieds. Honorable mention to AGL.

Haven't tried all those, but Clarks (pointier styles) and Naturalizers work for my skinny feet. Wish Rockport had skinnier heels cause they're so cushy! I'd say try Mephisto. They're soft too, though don't come in 1/2 sizes (at least the ones I wanted). DH was very happy with his.
It's worth spending more on shoes, cause they affect your whole body. Think of it as spending less on medical bills!

Me too, Angie! I found this especially true looking at sandals this summer.

I have foot issues that require wide width shoes and lots of arch support. Shoe shopping is a PITA (pain in the arse) because I still want my shoes to be cute, you know? So many comfort shoes look too much like medical devices or something, which is... just nope.

Brands that work for me and offer multiple width options:
* Naturalizer
* Aerosoles
* Taryn Rose
* Bella Vita
* Hush Puppies
* Ryka
* Walking Cradles

I cannot wear Vaneli, Sesto Meucci, Nine West, Donald J Pliner. They run too narrow.
I know that JRenee offers multiple width options, and I'm thinking about trying them out soon. I always get a new pair of shoes on the opening day of deer season; it's my price for my silence as I deal with being a "hunting season widow" LOL This year, I'm hoping to find something really pretty or super cool.

Good luck with your search for something that works for your feet!

I’m joining Team GRAF as well - although some of my issues are more like Gretchen - high arch, D width forefoot, average to narrow heel. But I am definitely in the losing foot padding camp. I spent my travel day yesterday researching ultra cushioned running shoes, on the way home from 4 days and over 60 miles of walking on hard pavement. I was in well cushioned new running shoes Brooks Ghost 11 in a wide width, and survived. But now I’m eyeing some Hokas!

Paul Green likes my low volume, fussy feet. The sticker shock is real, however. Consider Nordstrom Rack and play a long game. I got PG black booties last year--by a miracle, half off, which made them seem less crazy, and look forward to many, many years of use out of them. And my leopard sandals are the workhorses I hoped they would be.

Have you tried Superfeet insoles? They make ones with moderate arch support. Their website explains their different models.

Also, rather than Nordie's, you might want to try a shoe-focused store like The Walking Company. There is one in Boston. The salespeople will be knowledgeable, and they have many of the brands of interest to you. Not Naturalizer though - and I find them and Born to have the best combination of style and comfort. Ecco too, for sportier items.

As for Born shoes, I think they run a little large, especially boots. Since I've been using insoles, the boots have been perfect for me.

Suz, HAH...yeah it's not always easy to practice what we preach but I have NEVER been willing to wear shoes that hurt, not since one night out in my late 20's when I wore wood platform sandals on city streets and for several hours of dancing. OMG did my feet hurt! Once in a while I do because the shoes just started hurting just a little, but otherwise NO. :-) Based on your comments, I'm going to give Vionic and Sam Edelman another look. Interesting comments about having different insoles for different shoes....a wardrobe of insoles! I do have one pair of heel inserts that helped a lot with the PF in one pair of boots...maybe should consider using them in other shoes. Great suggestions, thanks!

Thanks Joy, and you are right that everyone's feet are so different. I do look at Nordstrom but find so few shoes there that I even want to consider so I don't get to take advantage of the SE's expertise. TGreater Boston Nordie's stores are a lot smaller than in Seattle or other larger cities (so I've been told by the SEs), so the selection is a lot smaller.

Thanks Jane! As I'm reading your reply I'm thinking about a neighbor of mine who works for a local Clark's business office. He and his family are transplants from the UK. He manages a group of shoe designers and visits factories in China and elsewhere, but alas his team designs MEN'S shoes :-(. He did tell me that the Clark Artisan line has been discontinued. I have a pair of sandals from this line that have lasted a LONG time. I find most of Clark shoes are too clunky/unattractive for my tastes, but there are always a few gems

Cardiff Girl, I have had Hotter on my radar for a while now, thanks for the tip. I never think of Timberland so I'll add them to my list. I think of them as similar to Merrill - sporty/outdoorsy.

Bijou - DEAD RIGHT. The straps on sandals are always too loose on feet like ours. Even the adjustable ones with velcro or a regular buckle are usually too loose, and if they initially fit well they loosen up with wear and become too loose. Once in a while I've found some with elastic straps that feel pretty good but they can cut into your feet after a few hours. Have never heard of Ziera will have to see if it's available here.

Janet - you are right that I should give PG and EF a look. PG shoes are so pricey that I've stayed away but maybe it's time to expand my horizons (and my wallet). I've tried on some EF sandals and they either didn't fit right or looked awful, but I should give their regular shoes a whirl. Thick socks do help, but for me I need the other supportive details too. On the other hand I found some Fly London sandals this summer that fit pretty well but I didn't like how they looked on my foot...so will give that brand another look too.

Angie...thanks! Maybe I should give Madewell and Steve Madden a try...they don't look very supportive but perhaps with an insole. You also list some pricier brands th at I really should consider. Interesting that you find shoes are getting wider. That could explain some of my difficulty finding enough choices. And interesting that most of the brands that have worked for me in the past do not work for you - your feet are clearly narrower than mine. For some of those brands I've had only one pair and bought them a few years ago so perhaps that same brand would not work now.

And as always, no brand is completely uniform in fit from one item to another, be it clothing or shoes.

Bijou, I have very low volume and narrow feet and find Gabor, Fly London, EF, Clarks, Rieker, Earth, Joseph Seilbel, Blondo, Mephisto and Merrill generally too wide. The rest I can get a good head start with lots of insole padding. And sandals I can only wear in a NARROW size, and sometimes those are still too wide.

I find that shoes are getting wider. They are not as fitted as they used to be. And my feet are shrinking.

I wonder if Paul Green and EF may work for you. PG is good for me because they seem to be made for slightly low volume feet. I have narrow heels as well, so my heels slip out of a lot of shoes, especially pumps and loafers. This is one of the reasons why I tend to go straight from sandals to booties!

I have Fly London booties that work for me because I can wear thick socks with them — when I tried their sandals this summer, the fit was way too loose in the foot even though the length was good. So don’t be afraid to try different styles in a brand that doesn’t seem to work in one instance.
