Kirti, it seems like simple shells might cost more than they're worth to have custom-made. Could you find a couple you like where the armholes are too deep and have them taken up at the shoulder seam? I often have this done, and it's a pretty simple fix.

Have a great trip!

Good luck Kirti! I hope you get some simple shells made, that would be so nice to be able to able to get them perfect. You could take in a couple of your tops and say that you want the neckline of top A and the hi-lo hem of top B, for example. That should be easy to do. As for the trousers, if you can find anything ready made that is almost a perfect fit, having them tailored should be a whole lot easier than having trousers custom made from scratch. I would think it would be easier to have a few simple sheath or shift dresses made for you as opposed to trousers. And silk, did you say? *le sigh* Your trip sounds so exciting, have fun!

Thanks Parsley! I will be collecting pictures of the kind of tops I want then, since I am getting them made because I can't find them in stores! Do you have any recommendations for a tailor?

Hi Kirti,
I've had things made in Thailand with mixed results.

The most sure-fire way to get clothes tailored that you'll like is to take something you already have that fits perfectly and have it duplicated.

If you're having something made from scratch it helps to have a picture showing the style you want. If not, then you need to know and describe every detail of what you want, which is harder than you'd think!

Then, it helps to have at least a few fittings unless it's something really simple.

The prices are great there and the silks are absolutely gorgeous. The menswear fabric selection is good, too.

Good luck. Thailand is just wonderful-have a great trip!

We're planning a trip to Bangkok in a couple of months and since the tailors there are so famous, I was thinking I would get some clothes tailored. However, after asking about getting trousers tailored, Angie and some others told me a tailor may not necessarily guarantee te perfect fit.

So now I'm rethinking the whole tailoring idea - is it wise? I am thinking of getting a few button down shirts stitched because they rarely fit me right.

I am also considering getting a couple of basic sleevless cotton shells made, because the sleeveless tops I find in stores usually have a too low neckline or too low armholes or both.

I'm not sure if I should get dresses made, mostly because I just bought a few, plus because those aren't as cheap to get custom stitched.

What do you think? Is it a good idea to get a few tops and shirts custom made? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I know it is still early, but I like to be well prepared!
